Chapter 2

Author: Teeny-Tiny Fish
As soon as Madison finished speaking, she hung up without saying another word. She didn't even ask how Zachary was doing.

To her, he was just a butler she could summon at will and dismiss whenever she got tired of him. She never had to treat him kindly. He would still obey her without question.

Zachary hadn't wanted to take another order from her, but he couldn't bring himself to let go of those darn hands. They were the only part of Madison that still let him feel Madelyn's presence.

Despite still running a fever, Zachary pulled the IV needle out of his hand and rushed straight to Madison's place. By the time he arrived, he was drenched in sweat and gasping for breath.

Madison sat on the couch, nestled in Elroy's arms as she gently massaged his stomach. Her expression darkened at the sight of Zachary.

"13 minutes. You were three minutes late."

Still panting, Zachary explained, "There was traffic."

Only after speaking did he realize how hoarse his voice had become. His head was pounding, too.

Madison, however, looked thoroughly annoyed. "You were late. Save the excuses. You made Elroy suffer for an extra three minutes. Did you do that on purpose?"

Zachary wanted to tell her he hadn't, but the words circled in his throat before melting into an apology. "I'm sorry."

His gaze never left Madison's hands, his eyes filled with a lingering affection.

Hugging Madison, Elroy spoke in a deliberately provocative tone. "Sorry to trouble you with the trip, Mr. Suffold. It's just a stomachache, but Mads always makes a big fuss over nothing."

Then he added, as if the thought had only just occurred to him, "Could I trouble you to bring me a glass of warm water, too?"

Madison looked at Zachary, her meaning unmistakable. He turned and headed for the kitchen.

When he returned with the water, Madison was holding a fruit knife and peeling a piece of fruit for Elroy. She wasn't good at it. The knife trembled in her hand, and she nearly cut herself several times.

Zachary's heart leaped into his throat. He couldn't help speaking up. "Be careful with your hands."

Elroy raised an eyebrow, then turned to Madison with a hint of displeasure. "Madison, does your assistant have that much authority? He even gets to tell you what to do when you're peeling an apple for me."

At that, Madison's expression darkened. She put down the knife. "Come here."

Zachary sighed in relief and was about to take the knife away from her when Madison suddenly picked up a glass of water from the table and poured it straight over his head.

The cold liquid streamed down his face and through his hair, making him shiver. Madison's voice was somehow even colder.

"Since when is it any of your business what I do?"

Zachary closed his eyes. Water dripped steadily from the strands of hair clinging to his forehead, leaving his already pale face looking even more frail.

Madison curled her lips in scorn. "You're just my assistant, Zachary. You have no right to interfere in my personal life. Learn your place."

He staggered twice, and the world around him began to blur. He stared at Madison's indistinct figure, at those hands that resembled Madelyn's so closely.

A dull ache spread through his chest. No matter how much she resembled her, she still wasn't Madelyn. His Maddie would never treat him this way.

Zachary lowered his head, and the world gradually came back into focus. "I understand."

Madison felt a sudden irritation at his sorry state. She casually tossed a cleaning rag onto the floor. "Then wipe up the water before you leave."

With that, she grabbed Elroy's hand and led him into the bedroom.

Zachary picked up the rag and wiped up the water, little by little. As soon as he wiped up the very last drop, his phone rang. It was the private investigator.

"Mr. Suffold, we've found the person who rescued you."

On the day Zachary was discharged from the hospital, he visited Madison one last time. She was lying on a hospital bed, wrapped in thick bandages from head to toe and considerably thinner than before. She started laughing self-deprecatingly at the sight of him."Did you and Madelyn get engaged in the end?" she asked.Zachary shook his head.Seemingly comforted by that fact, Madison continued almost as if to herself, "That's just as well. Since I can't have you, nobody else should either."Zachary was momentarily left speechless. He lifted his hand to show that the engagement ring on his ring finger had been replaced with a wedding ring."Thanks to you, instead of getting engaged, we just got married," he revealed. As Madison gazed at the ring, she suddenly started laughing. Her laughter turned to tears, and she lay limply in bed."I brought all this upon myself," she stated. If she'd treated Zachary a little better back then, would the outcome have been different?Would she

Three months later, the day of Zachary and Madelyn's engagement party arrived.Madison walked through the orchestra's back door to see Zachary and Madelyn's wedding photo displayed on the large screen. They looked dazzlingly beautiful in the photo, and their smiles were filled with happiness.Madison quickly teared up at the sight. Her performance had taken a nosedive ever since she returned from the hospital. She still had her hands, but she could no longer play the same melodies as before. Although she had once been a high-and-mighty principal pianist, she was now no more than a nameless pianist in the orchestra.Yet, none of that mattered to her anymore. She only cared for Zachary right now.She couldn't bear to see him marry another woman. After arriving at the hotel in which the engagement party was being held, she changed into a chauffeur's uniform and slipped into the convoy.Zachary was still wholly unaware when he got into the car.It wasn't until the scenery outside

On the night Madelyn regained her memories, Zachary fell asleep leaning against her hospital bed.Madelyn's phone rang, and when she picked up, a bodyguard reported, "Ms. Lockhart, our investigation has revealed that the person who trailed you to the abandoned factory is Elroy Pearson."Madelyn didn't look surprised. Hatred flickered across her gaze. She ordered, "Gather the evidence and have it sent to the police station. If memory serves me right, he works as a model, doesn't he? Spread the word around. I want to ensure that he never again sets foot on a runway."After hanging up, she looked toward Zachary. She felt nothing but grateful that he was alright. On the day she was to be discharged, Zachary went to settle the paperwork only to unexpectedly encounter Madison in the hallway.Madison had lost quite a lot of weight, and her hair had grown out.Her eyes were filled with deep sadness at the sight of him.She said, "I heard all about the incident. Elroy was behind it."

The following day, Zachary visited the city's old town district. His late maternal grandmother, Margaret Springfield, used to live here. After she passed away, the house fell into disrepair. The houses in this area had long since been abandoned and were no longer structurally sound, but the landscape itself remained the same as before. As he stood beside a wall in the familiar courtyard, he looked at Madelyn and asked, "Does anything come to mind?"He'd intentionally brought Madelyn here that day to help recover her memories.Madelyn looked briefly confused. The courtyard before her felt very familiar. A few memories flashed through her mind, but they were hazy and indistinct.Zachary then tugged her over to the other side, pointed toward an alley, and explained, "We often used to play in this alley. I'd sit on that rock over there while you walked me through my homework."The sound of children's cheerful laughter rang in Madelyn's ears. The view before her seemed to become fami

At that moment, facing down Zachary, Elroy finally experienced the terror of being helpless and alone. He took out his phone and started making a call without hesitation. He asked, "You'll let me go as long as they show up, right? I'll do it. Show me mercy, and I'll never dare cross you again."Zachary smiled mockingly at his lack of hesitation. It turned out that Elroy would even betray his friends as casually as he breathed. He should've had him figured out sooner. After making the appropriate calls, Elroy looked fearfully at Zachary and reported, "I already called them, so please let me go."Zachary walked into a random lounge, then asked unhurriedly, "What's the rush? I'm not as ruthless as you, so it's not as if I'm going to kill you."By the time Elroy's friends arrived, the banquet was almost over. Most of the guests downstairs had already left. When a waiter led Elroy's friends to the second floor, they found Zachary sitting on a couch."Why are you here? Where's Elro

Inside the banquet hall, Zachary carefully applied medication to Madelyn's wounds, his eyes full of heartbreak."Why bother getting physical with her?" he asked.Madelyn smiled nonchalantly. "I simply couldn't bear to see you suffer."Besides, she figured that Madison deserved a beating.Outside the banquet hall, Madison sat slumped on the ground, utterly drained.Elroy came looking for her and, upon seeing her sorry state, his eyes widened in surprise."What's going on? Who did you get into a fight with to end up in such a state?"Madison merely shoved him away coldly."Get lost!"He stared at her in disbelief. "So, you'd rather waste away in a shitty place like this than let me come near you? Do you really hate me that much?"She glared at him. "If you hadn't deliberately set Zachary up, I wouldn't have done so many irreversible things! We're already through, and I never want to see you again."Elroy climbed to his feet in anger, his gaze cold and menacing."In the end, i
