Chapter 3

Author: Teeny-Tiny Fish
Zachary's hands trembled with excitement.

No matter how much Madison resembled Madelyn, the similarities were limited to her hands and figure. Her face wasn't all that similar.

The moment he saw the photo the private investigator sent, he lost control. The woman who rescued him looked so much like Madelyn. It was as if they had been carved from the same mold.

"Where is she?" Zachary asked excitedly.

The face he had dreamed of day and night was right before his eyes. He couldn't wait to see her in person.

The investigator hesitated. "We also found out that she left the country this morning."

Almost without hesitation, Zachary made up his mind. "Book me a flight to wherever she is."

He had been afraid that the woman he thought he saw before passing out was nothing more than a hallucination.

But now that he had seen the photo, he was certain he had found someone who resembled Madelyn more than Madison did.

If that was the case, there was no reason to stay by Madison's side any longer.

"What flight?"

Madison's voice sounded behind him. "Why are you booking a ticket?"

He hurriedly locked his phone. "Nothing. Shouldn't you be keeping Mr. Pearson company?"

When he looked up, his hair was still wet, the damp strands clinging to his forehead. Seeing him in such a miserable state ruffled something in Madison's heart. She almost felt sorry for him.

"You seem awfully concerned about just anybody," she spat out, her face suddenly cold.

Zachary had no idea what she was getting at with her sarcastic remark. He was about to leave when Madison said, "You don't need to go to the orchestra tomorrow. Stay home and rest."

He nodded and left.

The next day, however, Zachary still showed up at the orchestra. He was there to tender his resignation. Now that he had decided to leave, there was no reason to keep working as Madison's personal assistant.

When he walked in, he saw Madison holding Elroy's hand. They were openly affectionate, making no effort to hide their intimacy from the rest of the orchestra.

She even announced in front of everyone, "Hey, guys. Just an announcement. Starting today, Elroy and I are dating."

The hall plunged into silence. Countless eyes landed on Zachary—some with pity, others with mockery.

When Madison spotted him, a dark scowl replaced her cheerful look. She pulled Zachary aside and snapped, "I thought I told you not to come today!"

Only then did he realize she hadn't given him the day off because she had noticed he was sick. She was worried he would show up and ruin the occasion.

Swallowing the bitterness in his heart, Zachary piped up. "There's something I want to tell you."

"Whatever it is, handle it yourself," she snapped. "You should've stayed home when I asked you to. Did you come here just to cause trouble?"

Zachary was about to tell her that wasn't the case when Elroy walked over. He slipped his arm through Madison's, his eyes brimming with provocation.

"You're here. Perfect. I was planning to take everyone out for karaoke. Wanna join us?"

Zachary didn't want to go, so he politely declined.

Elroy grabbed him by the arm, hostility evident on his face. "Mr. Suffold, I've heard from the others here that you had feelings for Mads. But she's into me, and I'm her actual boyfriend.

"You seem awfully bothered by the two of us being together. Don't tell me you still have feelings for her."

His tone was unpleasant, but in all fairness, he was Madison's boyfriend. He had every right to stake his claim.

The people around them began to feel sorry for Zachary. They were just about to step in to ease the tension when Zachary calmly spoke up.

"The truth is, there's been a huge misunderstanding. I don't have feelings for Madison."

On the day Zachary was discharged from the hospital, he visited Madison one last time. She was lying on a hospital bed, wrapped in thick bandages from head to toe and considerably thinner than before. She started laughing self-deprecatingly at the sight of him."Did you and Madelyn get engaged in the end?" she asked.Zachary shook his head.Seemingly comforted by that fact, Madison continued almost as if to herself, "That's just as well. Since I can't have you, nobody else should either."Zachary was momentarily left speechless. He lifted his hand to show that the engagement ring on his ring finger had been replaced with a wedding ring."Thanks to you, instead of getting engaged, we just got married," he revealed. As Madison gazed at the ring, she suddenly started laughing. Her laughter turned to tears, and she lay limply in bed."I brought all this upon myself," she stated. If she'd treated Zachary a little better back then, would the outcome have been different?Would she

Three months later, the day of Zachary and Madelyn's engagement party arrived.Madison walked through the orchestra's back door to see Zachary and Madelyn's wedding photo displayed on the large screen. They looked dazzlingly beautiful in the photo, and their smiles were filled with happiness.Madison quickly teared up at the sight. Her performance had taken a nosedive ever since she returned from the hospital. She still had her hands, but she could no longer play the same melodies as before. Although she had once been a high-and-mighty principal pianist, she was now no more than a nameless pianist in the orchestra.Yet, none of that mattered to her anymore. She only cared for Zachary right now.She couldn't bear to see him marry another woman. After arriving at the hotel in which the engagement party was being held, she changed into a chauffeur's uniform and slipped into the convoy.Zachary was still wholly unaware when he got into the car.It wasn't until the scenery outside

On the night Madelyn regained her memories, Zachary fell asleep leaning against her hospital bed.Madelyn's phone rang, and when she picked up, a bodyguard reported, "Ms. Lockhart, our investigation has revealed that the person who trailed you to the abandoned factory is Elroy Pearson."Madelyn didn't look surprised. Hatred flickered across her gaze. She ordered, "Gather the evidence and have it sent to the police station. If memory serves me right, he works as a model, doesn't he? Spread the word around. I want to ensure that he never again sets foot on a runway."After hanging up, she looked toward Zachary. She felt nothing but grateful that he was alright. On the day she was to be discharged, Zachary went to settle the paperwork only to unexpectedly encounter Madison in the hallway.Madison had lost quite a lot of weight, and her hair had grown out.Her eyes were filled with deep sadness at the sight of him.She said, "I heard all about the incident. Elroy was behind it."

The following day, Zachary visited the city's old town district. His late maternal grandmother, Margaret Springfield, used to live here. After she passed away, the house fell into disrepair. The houses in this area had long since been abandoned and were no longer structurally sound, but the landscape itself remained the same as before. As he stood beside a wall in the familiar courtyard, he looked at Madelyn and asked, "Does anything come to mind?"He'd intentionally brought Madelyn here that day to help recover her memories.Madelyn looked briefly confused. The courtyard before her felt very familiar. A few memories flashed through her mind, but they were hazy and indistinct.Zachary then tugged her over to the other side, pointed toward an alley, and explained, "We often used to play in this alley. I'd sit on that rock over there while you walked me through my homework."The sound of children's cheerful laughter rang in Madelyn's ears. The view before her seemed to become fami

At that moment, facing down Zachary, Elroy finally experienced the terror of being helpless and alone. He took out his phone and started making a call without hesitation. He asked, "You'll let me go as long as they show up, right? I'll do it. Show me mercy, and I'll never dare cross you again."Zachary smiled mockingly at his lack of hesitation. It turned out that Elroy would even betray his friends as casually as he breathed. He should've had him figured out sooner. After making the appropriate calls, Elroy looked fearfully at Zachary and reported, "I already called them, so please let me go."Zachary walked into a random lounge, then asked unhurriedly, "What's the rush? I'm not as ruthless as you, so it's not as if I'm going to kill you."By the time Elroy's friends arrived, the banquet was almost over. Most of the guests downstairs had already left. When a waiter led Elroy's friends to the second floor, they found Zachary sitting on a couch."Why are you here? Where's Elro

Inside the banquet hall, Zachary carefully applied medication to Madelyn's wounds, his eyes full of heartbreak."Why bother getting physical with her?" he asked.Madelyn smiled nonchalantly. "I simply couldn't bear to see you suffer."Besides, she figured that Madison deserved a beating.Outside the banquet hall, Madison sat slumped on the ground, utterly drained.Elroy came looking for her and, upon seeing her sorry state, his eyes widened in surprise."What's going on? Who did you get into a fight with to end up in such a state?"Madison merely shoved him away coldly."Get lost!"He stared at her in disbelief. "So, you'd rather waste away in a shitty place like this than let me come near you? Do you really hate me that much?"She glared at him. "If you hadn't deliberately set Zachary up, I wouldn't have done so many irreversible things! We're already through, and I never want to see you again."Elroy climbed to his feet in anger, his gaze cold and menacing."In the end, i
