Chapter 5

Author: Teeny-Tiny Fish
Ignoring the IV drip in his hand, Zachary rushed out of the hospital room, only to crash straight into someone's arms. Madison's face darkened as she asked, "What are you doing?"

His fever was raging, leaving him still delirious. He mumbled incoherently, "Maddie… I saw Maddie."

Seeing the tears stream down his face made Madison's heart waver. Even in his delirium, he was calling her name. Had she gone too far?

Almost as if possessed, she wrapped her arms around him. "There, there. I'm here," she said softly.

Only then did Zachary regain some of his senses. Realizing who was standing before him, he pushed her away. He staggered back to his bed, closed his eyes, and lay there like a withered corpse.

Madison hadn't expected that reaction. Her gaze fell on the bandages wrapped around his legs, and a belated flicker of regret stirred within her.

Still, she spoke irritably. "I'm here now, aren't I? You don't have to put on this act for me."

Zachary said nothing. His gaze lingered on her hands.

If Madelyn were still here, she would never do anything like this to hurt him. But Madison wasn't her.

The sorrow and longing in his eyes somehow softened Madison a little. "I've spoken to the doctor. They're just superficial wounds. Get some proper rest, and I'll visit you again."

From that moment until Zachary was discharged, Madison never showed up at his hospital room again. By then, he no longer cared.

When Zachary got home, he contacted his landlord to terminate his lease.

He had already booked a flight for three days later, and he needed to settle everything back home before then. He packed up everything he no longer needed and called a recycling service company to haul it away.

As he stepped outside, Zachary unexpectedly ran into Madison. She was holding a bag and stared in surprise as the workers carried his belongings out one by one and loaded them onto a truck.

"Are you moving?"

He didn't answer. He had no idea why she had shown up at his doorstep. "What do you want?"

His distant tone immediately upset her. The soup she was carrying suddenly felt unnecessary and uncomfortably hot in her hands.

"I came to see if you were dead yet."

As Madison spoke, her gaze fell on Zachary's legs. Her tone turned snarky.

"You seem all fine, despite that dramatic, pitiful act the other day. With your acting skills, you should've been in a troupe rather than an orchestra."

He couldn't understand why she was always so cruel to him, but he no longer had the energy to argue. "If there's nothing else, I'd like to rest."

Madison's expression turned grim. She grabbed him to stop him from leaving, then leaned in and forced him back against the wall.

"Done playing the victim? You're playing hard to get now, aren't you?"

Zachary winced in pain and was about to push her away when a startled voice came from behind them. "Mads…"

Elroy stared at the scene in disbelief. In the end, he turned and strode away.

Madison instantly snapped out of it. She shoved Zachary aside and hurried after Elroy. In the span of a moment, Zachary was knocked to the floor again.

The wounds on his legs reopened, and crimson blood seeped through the dressings. Crimson blood seeped through the dressing like a blooming flower.

On the day Zachary was discharged from the hospital, he visited Madison one last time. She was lying on a hospital bed, wrapped in thick bandages from head to toe and considerably thinner than before. She started laughing self-deprecatingly at the sight of him."Did you and Madelyn get engaged in the end?" she asked.Zachary shook his head.Seemingly comforted by that fact, Madison continued almost as if to herself, "That's just as well. Since I can't have you, nobody else should either."Zachary was momentarily left speechless. He lifted his hand to show that the engagement ring on his ring finger had been replaced with a wedding ring."Thanks to you, instead of getting engaged, we just got married," he revealed. As Madison gazed at the ring, she suddenly started laughing. Her laughter turned to tears, and she lay limply in bed."I brought all this upon myself," she stated. If she'd treated Zachary a little better back then, would the outcome have been different?Would she

Three months later, the day of Zachary and Madelyn's engagement party arrived.Madison walked through the orchestra's back door to see Zachary and Madelyn's wedding photo displayed on the large screen. They looked dazzlingly beautiful in the photo, and their smiles were filled with happiness.Madison quickly teared up at the sight. Her performance had taken a nosedive ever since she returned from the hospital. She still had her hands, but she could no longer play the same melodies as before. Although she had once been a high-and-mighty principal pianist, she was now no more than a nameless pianist in the orchestra.Yet, none of that mattered to her anymore. She only cared for Zachary right now.She couldn't bear to see him marry another woman. After arriving at the hotel in which the engagement party was being held, she changed into a chauffeur's uniform and slipped into the convoy.Zachary was still wholly unaware when he got into the car.It wasn't until the scenery outside

On the night Madelyn regained her memories, Zachary fell asleep leaning against her hospital bed.Madelyn's phone rang, and when she picked up, a bodyguard reported, "Ms. Lockhart, our investigation has revealed that the person who trailed you to the abandoned factory is Elroy Pearson."Madelyn didn't look surprised. Hatred flickered across her gaze. She ordered, "Gather the evidence and have it sent to the police station. If memory serves me right, he works as a model, doesn't he? Spread the word around. I want to ensure that he never again sets foot on a runway."After hanging up, she looked toward Zachary. She felt nothing but grateful that he was alright. On the day she was to be discharged, Zachary went to settle the paperwork only to unexpectedly encounter Madison in the hallway.Madison had lost quite a lot of weight, and her hair had grown out.Her eyes were filled with deep sadness at the sight of him.She said, "I heard all about the incident. Elroy was behind it."

The following day, Zachary visited the city's old town district. His late maternal grandmother, Margaret Springfield, used to live here. After she passed away, the house fell into disrepair. The houses in this area had long since been abandoned and were no longer structurally sound, but the landscape itself remained the same as before. As he stood beside a wall in the familiar courtyard, he looked at Madelyn and asked, "Does anything come to mind?"He'd intentionally brought Madelyn here that day to help recover her memories.Madelyn looked briefly confused. The courtyard before her felt very familiar. A few memories flashed through her mind, but they were hazy and indistinct.Zachary then tugged her over to the other side, pointed toward an alley, and explained, "We often used to play in this alley. I'd sit on that rock over there while you walked me through my homework."The sound of children's cheerful laughter rang in Madelyn's ears. The view before her seemed to become fami

At that moment, facing down Zachary, Elroy finally experienced the terror of being helpless and alone. He took out his phone and started making a call without hesitation. He asked, "You'll let me go as long as they show up, right? I'll do it. Show me mercy, and I'll never dare cross you again."Zachary smiled mockingly at his lack of hesitation. It turned out that Elroy would even betray his friends as casually as he breathed. He should've had him figured out sooner. After making the appropriate calls, Elroy looked fearfully at Zachary and reported, "I already called them, so please let me go."Zachary walked into a random lounge, then asked unhurriedly, "What's the rush? I'm not as ruthless as you, so it's not as if I'm going to kill you."By the time Elroy's friends arrived, the banquet was almost over. Most of the guests downstairs had already left. When a waiter led Elroy's friends to the second floor, they found Zachary sitting on a couch."Why are you here? Where's Elro

Inside the banquet hall, Zachary carefully applied medication to Madelyn's wounds, his eyes full of heartbreak."Why bother getting physical with her?" he asked.Madelyn smiled nonchalantly. "I simply couldn't bear to see you suffer."Besides, she figured that Madison deserved a beating.Outside the banquet hall, Madison sat slumped on the ground, utterly drained.Elroy came looking for her and, upon seeing her sorry state, his eyes widened in surprise."What's going on? Who did you get into a fight with to end up in such a state?"Madison merely shoved him away coldly."Get lost!"He stared at her in disbelief. "So, you'd rather waste away in a shitty place like this than let me come near you? Do you really hate me that much?"She glared at him. "If you hadn't deliberately set Zachary up, I wouldn't have done so many irreversible things! We're already through, and I never want to see you again."Elroy climbed to his feet in anger, his gaze cold and menacing."In the end, i
