Chapter 6

Author: Teeny-Tiny Fish
Zachary sat helplessly on the floor, looking miserable. It took him a while to get back up.

That night, he saw Elroy's new post online. "I'm willing to forgive her, considering she spent the entire night peeling walnuts for me."

Attached was a photo of Madison peeling walnuts by hand. Walnut shells were tough, and both of Madison's hands were cut and left bleeding.

Somehow, his caption screamed satisfaction.

After seeing it, Zachary only felt that Madison's hands were becoming more unfamiliar. They looked less like Madelyn's.

He locked his phone and gathered every item in the house that belonged to Madison—her water glass, slippers, and pajamas.

He had no idea whether she still wanted any of them, so he packed them up and mailed them to her address.

The next day, Zachary went to the orchestra again.

He hadn't managed to submit his resignation letter previously, so this time, he placed it directly on the conductor's desk and handed over all his outstanding duties.

As he walked out of the orchestra, he felt a weight lift off his shoulders.

Just then, a car pulled up beside him. The door opened, revealing Elroy sitting inside.

"What a coincidence, Mr. Suffold. There's a party at Rosewood Manor tonight. Mads will be there, too. Want to come along?"

Zachary had no interest in going. He was about to walk away when Elroy suddenly grabbed him. At the same time, several hands reached out from inside the car and yanked Zachary in.

The door slammed shut. Elroy glared at him through gritted teeth.

"I knew you wouldn't come quietly. A homewrecker like you is supposed to keep your distance when you see me, the actual boyfriend. How dare you still act so cocky in front of me!"

Zachary glanced around the car. Everyone inside was looking at him with disgust.

Soon, he realized what Elroy was planning. He wanted to teach Zachary a lesson for supposedly being the other man.

Zachary wasn't about to sit back and let it happen. He reached for the car door, trying to pry it open, but Elroy grabbed him by the hair and yanked him back hard.

"You had the guts to seduce my girlfriend, but not to face me? How dare you get all touchy-feely with Mads in front of me! What's next? Getting into her bed?"

As he spoke, Elroy slapped Zachary hard across the face.

Zachary's head spun. Just then, the car started moving. He knew there was no way he could escape anytime soon. With no other choice, he forced himself to speak.

"What happened yesterday was a misunderstanding."

Madison had been the one to force herself on him. Why should he have to suffer for it?

But Elroy wasn't listening. He slapped Zachary across the face again.

"I saw you two! How many more misunderstandings can there be? If you hadn't played the victim, Mads wouldn't have brought you soup!"

Blood trickled from the corner of Zachary's mouth. He lay sprawled across the seat in a miserable state, desperately trying to explain himself.

Elroy simply shoved something into his mouth to shut him up.

Someone beside him suggested, "Don't hit his face. Mads might notice. Hit him somewhere the clothes will cover."

Elroy curled his lips into a smirk, then turned and kicked Zachary several times. "Today, I'm going to make you understand that my woman is off-limits!"

Elroy felt uneasy at the thought of Zachary spending the last three years by Madison's side while he had been abroad.

What if she actually developed feelings for Zachary? What if she eventually remembered how good he had been to her?

He had to nip it in the bud before Zachary became a problem down the road.

With that in mind, Elroy grew more ruthless, deliberately targeting places where the bruises wouldn't show.

Trapped in the cramped car, Zachary was powerless against his attacks. It felt like he was back in his old school days, when he was bullied by other students. Only this time, no one was there to save him.

At some point, the vehicle halted.

Zachary spat out the cloth stuffed into his mouth and desperately shouted for help. Madison happened to be passing by. Hearing the commotion inside, she paused and reached for the car door.

On the day Zachary was discharged from the hospital, he visited Madison one last time. She was lying on a hospital bed, wrapped in thick bandages from head to toe and considerably thinner than before. She started laughing self-deprecatingly at the sight of him."Did you and Madelyn get engaged in the end?" she asked.Zachary shook his head.Seemingly comforted by that fact, Madison continued almost as if to herself, "That's just as well. Since I can't have you, nobody else should either."Zachary was momentarily left speechless. He lifted his hand to show that the engagement ring on his ring finger had been replaced with a wedding ring."Thanks to you, instead of getting engaged, we just got married," he revealed. As Madison gazed at the ring, she suddenly started laughing. Her laughter turned to tears, and she lay limply in bed."I brought all this upon myself," she stated. If she'd treated Zachary a little better back then, would the outcome have been different?Would she

Three months later, the day of Zachary and Madelyn's engagement party arrived.Madison walked through the orchestra's back door to see Zachary and Madelyn's wedding photo displayed on the large screen. They looked dazzlingly beautiful in the photo, and their smiles were filled with happiness.Madison quickly teared up at the sight. Her performance had taken a nosedive ever since she returned from the hospital. She still had her hands, but she could no longer play the same melodies as before. Although she had once been a high-and-mighty principal pianist, she was now no more than a nameless pianist in the orchestra.Yet, none of that mattered to her anymore. She only cared for Zachary right now.She couldn't bear to see him marry another woman. After arriving at the hotel in which the engagement party was being held, she changed into a chauffeur's uniform and slipped into the convoy.Zachary was still wholly unaware when he got into the car.It wasn't until the scenery outside

On the night Madelyn regained her memories, Zachary fell asleep leaning against her hospital bed.Madelyn's phone rang, and when she picked up, a bodyguard reported, "Ms. Lockhart, our investigation has revealed that the person who trailed you to the abandoned factory is Elroy Pearson."Madelyn didn't look surprised. Hatred flickered across her gaze. She ordered, "Gather the evidence and have it sent to the police station. If memory serves me right, he works as a model, doesn't he? Spread the word around. I want to ensure that he never again sets foot on a runway."After hanging up, she looked toward Zachary. She felt nothing but grateful that he was alright. On the day she was to be discharged, Zachary went to settle the paperwork only to unexpectedly encounter Madison in the hallway.Madison had lost quite a lot of weight, and her hair had grown out.Her eyes were filled with deep sadness at the sight of him.She said, "I heard all about the incident. Elroy was behind it."

The following day, Zachary visited the city's old town district. His late maternal grandmother, Margaret Springfield, used to live here. After she passed away, the house fell into disrepair. The houses in this area had long since been abandoned and were no longer structurally sound, but the landscape itself remained the same as before. As he stood beside a wall in the familiar courtyard, he looked at Madelyn and asked, "Does anything come to mind?"He'd intentionally brought Madelyn here that day to help recover her memories.Madelyn looked briefly confused. The courtyard before her felt very familiar. A few memories flashed through her mind, but they were hazy and indistinct.Zachary then tugged her over to the other side, pointed toward an alley, and explained, "We often used to play in this alley. I'd sit on that rock over there while you walked me through my homework."The sound of children's cheerful laughter rang in Madelyn's ears. The view before her seemed to become fami

At that moment, facing down Zachary, Elroy finally experienced the terror of being helpless and alone. He took out his phone and started making a call without hesitation. He asked, "You'll let me go as long as they show up, right? I'll do it. Show me mercy, and I'll never dare cross you again."Zachary smiled mockingly at his lack of hesitation. It turned out that Elroy would even betray his friends as casually as he breathed. He should've had him figured out sooner. After making the appropriate calls, Elroy looked fearfully at Zachary and reported, "I already called them, so please let me go."Zachary walked into a random lounge, then asked unhurriedly, "What's the rush? I'm not as ruthless as you, so it's not as if I'm going to kill you."By the time Elroy's friends arrived, the banquet was almost over. Most of the guests downstairs had already left. When a waiter led Elroy's friends to the second floor, they found Zachary sitting on a couch."Why are you here? Where's Elro

Inside the banquet hall, Zachary carefully applied medication to Madelyn's wounds, his eyes full of heartbreak."Why bother getting physical with her?" he asked.Madelyn smiled nonchalantly. "I simply couldn't bear to see you suffer."Besides, she figured that Madison deserved a beating.Outside the banquet hall, Madison sat slumped on the ground, utterly drained.Elroy came looking for her and, upon seeing her sorry state, his eyes widened in surprise."What's going on? Who did you get into a fight with to end up in such a state?"Madison merely shoved him away coldly."Get lost!"He stared at her in disbelief. "So, you'd rather waste away in a shitty place like this than let me come near you? Do you really hate me that much?"She glared at him. "If you hadn't deliberately set Zachary up, I wouldn't have done so many irreversible things! We're already through, and I never want to see you again."Elroy climbed to his feet in anger, his gaze cold and menacing."In the end, i
