Chapter 7

Author: Teeny-Tiny Fish
Just as Madison was about to open the car door, her phone rang. Answering the call, she knocked on the window, confused. "Is that you in the car, Elroy?"

"My pants are torn," Elroy answered. "Can you go to the lounge and bring me a change of clothes?"

She didn't think much of it and turned back to fetch some. As soon as he hung up, Elroy turned back to Zachary, whose mouth was still covered.

"Trying to call for help? You think Mads came here to save you? I'll show you today just who actually matters to her."

With that, Elroy tore his clothes and smeared some eyeshadow over his skin.

When Madison returned, she saw Elroy climbing out of the car with his clothes in disarray and his hair a mess. Fear filled his eyes as his shoulders trembled uncontrollably.

More importantly, there were patches of purple and green all over his body.

Madison rushed over, furious. "Who did this to you?"

Terrified, Elroy cowered behind her, his gaze falling on Zachary inside the car. "I-It was Mr. Suffold. He threatened me and told me to break up with you, or he'd beat me to death."

He sounded utterly pitiful, fueling the anger on Madison's face.

Zachary was just about to deny the accusation when she grabbed his hair and yanked him out of the car. "How dare you lay a hand on Elroy!"

Before he could react, she slapped him hard across the face.

Zachary's ear rang. His head spun, and he instantly tasted blood in his mouth. "I didn't do it!" he shouted, trying to defend himself.

Elroy's friends immediately backed him up. "Mads, we saw it happening! Your assistant was acting like a tough guy, going after Elroy and even threatening to beat us up too!"

"Yeah! Don't let his obedient act fool you! He's a different person behind your back! Just look at what he's done to Elroy!"

Madison's eyes practically blazed with anger. "You hear that? They all saw it! How dare you still deny it!"

Zachary knew there was no point explaining. He could only tug at his sleeves, hoping to show her who the real victim was.

Seeing what he was trying to do, Elroy's friends hurried over and pinned his hands down.

"Mads, why don't you take Elroy to change first? We'll deal with this guy."

Elroy took the opportunity to block Madison's view. The others held Zachary down, pinning his hands and covering his mouth to stop him from speaking.

In the end, she said nothing. She merely shot Zachary a cold look, then walked off with Elroy. That left Zachary alone with Elroy's friends in the courtyard.

Zachary looked around. This was a villa in the suburbs, and the place was probably full of Elroy's people. Even if he called for help, no one would come to his rescue.

A deep sense of hopelessness engulfed him.

The men crouched in front of him, looking smug. "Do you get it now? Mads loves our boy, Elroy. You're nothing but a homewrecker trying to ruin what they have. You deserve to be taught a lesson."

With that, one of them grabbed Zachary by the hair and hurled him straight into the swimming pool.

The water was frigid, chilling Zachary to the bone. He thrashed back to the surface, only for those hands to force him underwater again.

An overwhelming sense of suffocation drowned him.

His chest felt ready to burst. He could barely see anything. Every time he broke the surface, someone shoved him back down.

It went on and on, like an endless punishment. He grew weaker with every passing moment, and his consciousness was slipping away.

At one moment, he even contemplated giving up. If he died, he could at least see Madelyn again.

Just as he gave up struggling and started sinking toward the bottom, the men on the poolside panicked.

"Did he actually drown?"

"Get him out now!"

A second before passing out, Zachary was pulled out of the water.

A man kicked him hard in the chest. He coughed up a mouthful of murky water, every breath tearing his chest apart.

Madison was coming downstairs when she witnessed the scene. Her eyes widened in shock.

On the day Zachary was discharged from the hospital, he visited Madison one last time. She was lying on a hospital bed, wrapped in thick bandages from head to toe and considerably thinner than before. She started laughing self-deprecatingly at the sight of him."Did you and Madelyn get engaged in the end?" she asked.Zachary shook his head.Seemingly comforted by that fact, Madison continued almost as if to herself, "That's just as well. Since I can't have you, nobody else should either."Zachary was momentarily left speechless. He lifted his hand to show that the engagement ring on his ring finger had been replaced with a wedding ring."Thanks to you, instead of getting engaged, we just got married," he revealed. As Madison gazed at the ring, she suddenly started laughing. Her laughter turned to tears, and she lay limply in bed."I brought all this upon myself," she stated. If she'd treated Zachary a little better back then, would the outcome have been different?Would she

Three months later, the day of Zachary and Madelyn's engagement party arrived.Madison walked through the orchestra's back door to see Zachary and Madelyn's wedding photo displayed on the large screen. They looked dazzlingly beautiful in the photo, and their smiles were filled with happiness.Madison quickly teared up at the sight. Her performance had taken a nosedive ever since she returned from the hospital. She still had her hands, but she could no longer play the same melodies as before. Although she had once been a high-and-mighty principal pianist, she was now no more than a nameless pianist in the orchestra.Yet, none of that mattered to her anymore. She only cared for Zachary right now.She couldn't bear to see him marry another woman. After arriving at the hotel in which the engagement party was being held, she changed into a chauffeur's uniform and slipped into the convoy.Zachary was still wholly unaware when he got into the car.It wasn't until the scenery outside

On the night Madelyn regained her memories, Zachary fell asleep leaning against her hospital bed.Madelyn's phone rang, and when she picked up, a bodyguard reported, "Ms. Lockhart, our investigation has revealed that the person who trailed you to the abandoned factory is Elroy Pearson."Madelyn didn't look surprised. Hatred flickered across her gaze. She ordered, "Gather the evidence and have it sent to the police station. If memory serves me right, he works as a model, doesn't he? Spread the word around. I want to ensure that he never again sets foot on a runway."After hanging up, she looked toward Zachary. She felt nothing but grateful that he was alright. On the day she was to be discharged, Zachary went to settle the paperwork only to unexpectedly encounter Madison in the hallway.Madison had lost quite a lot of weight, and her hair had grown out.Her eyes were filled with deep sadness at the sight of him.She said, "I heard all about the incident. Elroy was behind it."

The following day, Zachary visited the city's old town district. His late maternal grandmother, Margaret Springfield, used to live here. After she passed away, the house fell into disrepair. The houses in this area had long since been abandoned and were no longer structurally sound, but the landscape itself remained the same as before. As he stood beside a wall in the familiar courtyard, he looked at Madelyn and asked, "Does anything come to mind?"He'd intentionally brought Madelyn here that day to help recover her memories.Madelyn looked briefly confused. The courtyard before her felt very familiar. A few memories flashed through her mind, but they were hazy and indistinct.Zachary then tugged her over to the other side, pointed toward an alley, and explained, "We often used to play in this alley. I'd sit on that rock over there while you walked me through my homework."The sound of children's cheerful laughter rang in Madelyn's ears. The view before her seemed to become fami

At that moment, facing down Zachary, Elroy finally experienced the terror of being helpless and alone. He took out his phone and started making a call without hesitation. He asked, "You'll let me go as long as they show up, right? I'll do it. Show me mercy, and I'll never dare cross you again."Zachary smiled mockingly at his lack of hesitation. It turned out that Elroy would even betray his friends as casually as he breathed. He should've had him figured out sooner. After making the appropriate calls, Elroy looked fearfully at Zachary and reported, "I already called them, so please let me go."Zachary walked into a random lounge, then asked unhurriedly, "What's the rush? I'm not as ruthless as you, so it's not as if I'm going to kill you."By the time Elroy's friends arrived, the banquet was almost over. Most of the guests downstairs had already left. When a waiter led Elroy's friends to the second floor, they found Zachary sitting on a couch."Why are you here? Where's Elro

Inside the banquet hall, Zachary carefully applied medication to Madelyn's wounds, his eyes full of heartbreak."Why bother getting physical with her?" he asked.Madelyn smiled nonchalantly. "I simply couldn't bear to see you suffer."Besides, she figured that Madison deserved a beating.Outside the banquet hall, Madison sat slumped on the ground, utterly drained.Elroy came looking for her and, upon seeing her sorry state, his eyes widened in surprise."What's going on? Who did you get into a fight with to end up in such a state?"Madison merely shoved him away coldly."Get lost!"He stared at her in disbelief. "So, you'd rather waste away in a shitty place like this than let me come near you? Do you really hate me that much?"She glared at him. "If you hadn't deliberately set Zachary up, I wouldn't have done so many irreversible things! We're already through, and I never want to see you again."Elroy climbed to his feet in anger, his gaze cold and menacing."In the end, i
