Victoria Harper

I was going to keep this baby

So I had to get Daniel to let me keep the baby and somehow stop him from withdrawing the support on my father’s medical bills

Sometimes I wonder why I was so unlucky with men. An abusive fiancé who owned my future—and now a baby that tied me to the man who used to torment me.

But life doesn’t care if it’s unfair. I had to survive.

The campaign hall was packed. Lights everywhere, cameras flashing, people chanting Daniel’s name like he was some kind of saint.

He walked in with that fake smile he always wore when he wanted the world to adore him. His arm curled tight around my waist, pulling me close so everyone could see how “in love” we were.

“Smile wider,” he whispered through his teeth

So I smiled, even as my stomach twisted. To everyone else, we looked like the perfect couple. To me, it felt like being trapped in a cage.

He kissed my cheek, his fingers caressing my sides as the press snapped photo after photo. He knew exactly how to play the crowd—touching me, staring at me with fake obsession, whispering things in my ear that made me shiver for all the wrong reasons.

“You’re so lucky to have a man like him” someone from the crowd yelled and I did the only thing I knew how to.

Smile and wave and so did Daniel

If only they knew

When the campaign ended, we slipped backstage.

Immediately we were out of camera coverage, he dropped the act “So?” His voice was sharp now, no cameras around to soften him. “The abortion, Victoria. Did you book it?”

My lips parted, ready to beg, ready to somehow make him understand. But before I could speak, his assistant rushed in clutching files.

“Sir, these need to be signed immediately.”

He followed her away. Before I even got to explain things to him. But I would make him listen

I’ll just go wait in his office. When he was done signing and through with his campaign he’d come there and I would explain to him

On my way to his office, I saw Malcolm outside. He was speaking to two large men dressed in black suits, their eyes hidden behind sun glasses.

When he noticed my presence. He gave me a smile and dismissed them, leaning against his car like he owned the place.

Why was he here?

His dark eyes locked on me, and my stomach did that thing again—the thing I hated.

“I thought I told you not to show your face again,” I hissed, forcing my voice steady.

He ignored my anger and smirked, gazing at me. “Nice boyfriend you’ve got.”

“Fiancé,” I corrected, flashing the ring like it meant something.

I guess I wanted to show Malcolm that I wasn’t the ugly girl he was bullied and someone actually wanted me even if that wasn’t the case.

His smirk faded and his eyes fell to the ring. His jaw clenched and he looked away. “How does your fiancée feel about you being pregnant with my child”

“Why do you care? It isn’t your business” I said and turned around to walk away but he pulled me back by my waist, pressing me to his chest with his hands moving to my stomach.

He towered over me, leaning close until his breath grazed my ear.

“You’re carrying my child, Harper. Whether you like it or not, that makes everything you do my business.”

His breath was warm against my neck, and the worst part was how my body reacted — a reminder of everything I’d been starved of.

I found myself leaning in but I snapped out of it immediately and yanked myself away from his grasp

I rubbed my neck, pretending to be fine when my body was tingling with need.

He sighed, looking at me with a certain softness, I didn’t understand. “I know about Daniel’s plans of making you abort my baby. ”

The way he kept calling the baby with possessiveness infuriated me because I wanted nothing to do with him.

“I can make him understand,” he said, his voice low, almost gentle. “You think I’ll let you erase what’s mine like I don’t exist?”

His words cut straight into me.

“I don’t want your help.” I tried to push past him, but he stepped in front of me.

His voice dropped lower, rougher. “Look. You hate me, I get it. Don’t ruin our child’s life because of it. And you know damn well this child ties us together.”

Heat spread through my body before I could stop it. I hated the way he looked at me.

But he did have a point.

Maybe if I took him with me to explain to Daniel, he would make Daniel understand.

“Fine. You’ll help me explain to my fiancé why I should keep the baby and then we could work something out” I hated the idea and him even more but I had to think like a mother now.

We approached his office door, steadily hoping that Daniel wouldn’t embarrass me in front of Malcolm and just understand

“Fuck yesss!!” My thoughts were interrupted by moans coming from Daniel’s office

low, breathy, unmistakable.

A woman’s moan.

“Faster!!! Uhhhh, yesss. Just like that, baby”

“You like that huh?? Yeah??” I heard a masculine voice I knew too well and then I heard a spank

Oh no!

God no.

My eyes stung and my legs shook as I stood in front of his door. I don’t know why I thought I should see it for myself but I pushed the door open before I changed my mind

And then my whole world stopped.

Untie her. Now.”The guards froze, exchanging nervous glances. One of them stammered, “Boss, we thought—”“You thought?” I snapped, taking two lethal steps forward until they recoiled. “She’s not some street rat you toss around like garbage. She’s under my protection. Drop her.”They lowered her onto the edge of my bed, rough hands letting her go as if she burned them. One of them dropped an envelope on my table. “Boss, we got the snoop” I dismissed them with a sharp glare. I picked up the envelope. I had heard reports of someone asking too many questions, and poking their heads where it didn’t belong. I knew the drill, I had done it so many times. Victoria Harper Of all the men in the world—why him?I blinked once. Twice. The nightmare didn’t disappear; it just kept breathing in front of meReality hit harder with every blink. My chest squeezed so tight I thought I might actually faint. He looked different than I remembered. Taller. Stronger. His shoulders filled out his jacket like it had been made for him. His hair was dark and a little messy, but the kind of messy that looked like he wanted it that way. His jaw was sharp, his mouth firm, and his eyes… they were the same The same eyes that used to narrow across the hallway when I was fifteen and trembling under his smirk, only now they looked older, colder, harder. He was still infuriatingly good-looking. And I hated that I noticed. He looked equally shocked to see me but quickly covered it up with a smirk I so desperately wanted to wipe off his stupid face My jaw clenched. “Looks like you guys are quite familiar with each other. I’ll let you both talk things out” Dr. All

The question that haunted me wasn’t whether to keep the baby. It was how the hell was I even pregnant? Was there lost time I couldn’t account for? I replayed every moment from the past two months — and none of them included sex with anyone. My phone buzzed beside me. It was doctor Allen. I almost didn’t pick it up because what more could he have to say. Eventually I picked up because of his persistent calls “Ms. Harper, Dr. Allen here.” His voice was tight, like someone who had just committed a crime and was dialing 911.“Yes?”“I think it’s best if you come down to the hospital,” he said carefully. “There’s been… a development.”My chest squeezed. “A development?” My voice was sharper than I intended. “What kind of development?”“I really think you should come in, Ms. Harper. It’s not something I can
