Masuk"Lyra!!"
Kael’s voice boomed down the corridor... Fuck, he was searching for me. My heart slammed against my ribs like a battering ram. The gate issue hadn't taken him nearly as long as I’d hoped."Lyra? Are you in the guest room?"
I heard a door handle rattle down the hall, followed by a low curse from Kael when he realized my room was empty.Full panic flared in my chest, but I forced my hands to stay steady. I shoved the vault door shut and swung the portrait back into place. His footsteps were heading straight toward the study now...Fuck...at this rate, he would catch me here.
"Lyra?"
He was right outside the door. I looked around the dark room frantically. The doorknob began to turn, but thankfully I had locked it from inside too."What the hell...?" Kael muttered from the other side, his tone instantly shifting from confused to dangerously alert.
I hugged the stolen documents to my chest, my eyes darting toward the floor-to-ceiling glass doors leading out onto the second-floor balcony. The doorknob rattled violently again, followed by a heavy, impatient bang against the wood. Was he...kicking his own door? "Lyra?" Kael’s voice turned lethal, the illusion of the gentle savior instantly evaporating. "I know you're in there. Open this door.""No," I whispered to myself, my breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps as I looked down at the stolen folders in my hands. "No, no, no... not again. I'm not going back into a cage."
If Kael walked through that door and saw these documents in my arms, there would be no second chance. He wouldn't bother with the fake marriage or the long game this time. He would fast-track his plans, lock me in a cell, force my hand, and kill me all over again...only much faster this time.
"Fuck...oh goddess no...if he catches me with these, he'll kill me tonight," I muttered, my teeth chattering as I backed toward the balcony. "He'll just slit my throat and take them from my cold hands."
I clutched the Silverclaw deeds and his financial ledger so tightly against my chest my knuckles turned white."I'd rather die," I said out loud, the words tasting like copper and ash on my tongue, but steadying the tremor in my chest. "I would rather break my own neck right now than let him steal my life for a second time. If I'm dying tonight, it's going to be on my terms."
I unlocked the balcony latch, pushing the glass door open and stepping out into the cold night air. I leaned over the carved stone railing, looking down at the pitch-black darkness below.
I squinted to look at the ground from up here better, near the edge of the courtyard, something was moving around the heavy bushes and shadows near the trees.
"What is that?" I breathed, squinting into the shadows. "Did he really send his guards down there already?"
My heart leaped into my throat, but I didn't have time to figure out what was moving in the dark, nor did I care. Behind me, the study door groaned loudly as Kael threw his full weight against it, the heavy wood splintering around the lock."You're not taking my future again, Kael," I whispered to the empty air.
I scrambled up, climbing the railings, the freezing wind whipping my silk robe around my bare legs. I closed my eyes, turned my face up toward the pale moonlight, and squeezed the documents against my heart."Goddess, hear me," I prayed aloud, my voice cracking against the wind. "If you gave me this second life just to watch me fail, take my soul before he touches me. But if I am meant to rule... catch me."
"Lyra, stop!" Kael roared as the study door bursted open behind me. "Not this time, psycho," I spat over my shoulder. I pushed off the ledge and plunged into the dark. The wind roared in my ears, rushing past my face as the ground rushed up to meet me.
Mom... Dad... I thought, my chest aching as the faces of my slaughtered parents flashed behind my closed eyes. I thought about their smiles, their love, their white hair that belonged to the people of my Northern clan."I'm coming" I whispered, ready for everything to end.
As the rushing air tore at my hair and robe, a sharp, bitter regret pierced through my resolve. I had clawed my way back from the dead, reclaimed my family's sacred deeds, and defied destiny...only to die in the dirt before I could even taste my revenge. And the saddest part of it all? As my life flashed before my eyes, I realized a tragic truth. I had lived and died twice, and I never even found my own fated mate.
I never knew what it felt like to be truly claimed by someone meant just for me.
I braced for the bone-shattering impact against the stone courtyard. Instead, a pair of impossibly strong arms wrapped around my waist, absorbing the brutal force of my fall with effortless strength."Got you," a deep, rich voice murmured, vibrating right against my chest.
Panic spiked through my veins with the force of a lightning strike. Kael. He must have used a shortcut or a pack-link jump to reach the courtyard before me. He caught me. It was all over."Let me go!" I screamed, twisting violently in his grip, thrashing with every ounce of remaining strength. "Get your hands off me, you monster! I'd rather die than let you touch me...!"
"Hush, wolfie. Calm down," the voice rumbled again.
I froze mid-thrash. Wolfie... Only one person called me Wolfie. Only one person who I have hated since I was a teenager... He was the one person I hated the most in my past life.I forced my terrified eyes open and looked up at the man holding me.
The moonlight caught the edge of his face, illuminating his head full of thick, striking white hair that fell across his sharp, lethal jawline. My eyes traveled up, locking onto a pair of piercing, intense grey eyes staring down at me.
I stopped struggling entirely, my voice seizing in my throat as I finally recognized him. Alpha Cassian.Chapter 14“Don't move? Don't move?? It’s all your fault!!" I whispered, glaring at him. “You brought us right back to Kael’s fucking living room in the name of laying low, and now all they need to do is break down that door.”Cassian looked at me as though I had just said something completely ridiculous.“They can’t break that lock, Wolfie.”If I wasn't scared out of my mind, I would have laughed out loud.“They are Kael’s border sentinels, Cassian. They’re not exactly going to stand outside, admire the bad weather, and leave because the door looks difficult.”“They won’t get through it.”“You're a liar.”His brow lifted.“And a proud fucker,” I added. “You dragged me into a bunker sitting practically in Kael’s backyard, told me it was the safest place we could hide, and now that his men are standing outside, you’re still acting like this was some brilliant plan.”“If you would just wait for me to explain, you would realize that it is a brilliant plan.”I stared at him like he was a
Chapter 13I immediately dropped to my stomach, pressing myself against the cold floor as another loud rattle came from the front door handle. My heart slammed against my ribs, and for a second, I couldn't breathe... They were still outside. Kael's men were still outside, and judging from the way they were trying the door, they weren't planning on leaving anytime soon. Why did I have to be so foolish? If those men found me, and found the folder that I... Fuck... The folder!!My eyes darted toward the folder still clutched in my hand.I couldn't let them find those. Not the deeds to my pack and inheritance. Not the evidence against Kael. Not after everything I had risked to get them. If those men searched this place and found what I had stolen from Kael's study, I wouldn't just be caught. They would know exactly what Cassian and I had been planning, and whatever small advantage we had would disappear before I even had the chance to use it.I crawled toward the heavy curtains near the
Chapter 12I woke up with my teeth clattering so hard I thought they were going to shatter in my mouth. The air in the room was freezing, the kind of cold that seemed to seep through the walls and sink straight into my bones. My hands were completely numb, so I pulled my arms tightly around my chest and curled into myself, desperately trying to hold on to whatever little warmth was left in my body.Even with the heavy blackout blinds shut over the massive glass walls, the cold was relentless. It felt like we had been buried inside an icebox overnight. I reached blindly across the bed for my half of the blanket, expecting to find it within reach, but my fingers met nothing except cold, empty sheets.I blinked several times, trying to make sense of the darkness, and when my eyes adjusted, a fresh wave of irritation replaced the discomfort. The pillow wall I had so carefully built between Cassian and me was completely destroyed. He had kicked the entire thing onto the floor, dragged the
Chapter 11My stomach let out the most vicious, violent rumble that echoed through the empty study.Goddess above... Do I have to get hungry now????It was already midnight, and the hunger was literally gnawing at my insides like acid. Every instinct in my body was screaming at me to march into the kitchen and hunt for leftovers, or beg...fucking beg him for food... He definitely left some food for me.. He had to...but my pride held me firmly in place."I would rather starve," I muttered out loud to the quiet, dark room, crossing my arms tight over my ribs. "I would literally rather drop dead right here on the carpet than walk out there and ask him for a single crumb."Right on cue, my stomach let out an even louder, more embarrassing growl, betraying me instantly. My wolf whimpered in my head, thoroughly unimpressed by my stubbornness. He ate the steak, she whined. We could have had garlic butter."Shut up," I hissed to myself, rubbing my temples. "It doesn't matter. I just need to
Chapter 10I spent the rest of the day putting as much distance between Cassian and myself as humanly possible. The safehouse was sprawling, but no amount of square footage felt like enough when forced to share it with an infuriating fucking buffoon of an Alpha. I retreated to a dark study on the far side of the lodge, barricading myself inside with my father’s Silverclaw deeds spread across a heavy mahogany desk.I was too restless to even read the words...I.was stuck... Fucking stuck...Goddess, why the hell do these things happen to just me???I need to run... I can't trust him. I can't trust anyone."Thus us stupid... How the fuck I'm I stuck here listening to Cassian of all people?? I need to leave" I said to no one in particular...I wasn't going to stick around to find out if Cassian’s "hidden in plain sight" theory held up when Kael's hounds finally caught our scent. I spent hours mapping out the terrain in my head. I knew these border woods. If I slipped out through the re
Chapter 9The smell of cedarwood, rich espresso, and crisp leather pulled me back to consciousness. My eyes snapped open, my heart hammering against my ribs like a caged beast before my mind could even process where I was. Panic spiked hard and fast in my chest.Kael.I scrambled up into a sitting position, my hands instantly clawing around the sofa cushions until my fingers wrapped tight around my father’s Silverclaw deeds. The thick folder was still with me...but the sight of them didn't stop the cold sweat dripping down the back of my neck.I wasn't in the back of the armored vehicle anymore. The room was massive, dimly lit, and bathed in the deep amber glow of a grand stone fireplace roaring in the corner. Polished hardwood floors stretched beneath high-end, modern furniture. But what made my blood run cold was the massive wall of floor-to-ceiling glass paneling right in front of me.Outside, thick fog clung to the base of tall pine trees, but through the dark canopy, I could see
