Malik

The shooter wore black. Tactical, unremarkable, a balaclava rolled up to his brow and a rifle half-raised, caught by the camera mid-motion as he leaned out of the van's open door on the private drive. Nothing about him should have told me anything. Professionals look like this. Interchangeable, disposable, bought by the day.

Except pinned to his collar, catching the sodium light for one frozen grainy frame, was a small gold pin. A crown, stylized, wrapped in a thorned vine.

  • His Queen of Chaos    A Note from the Author

Hi, everyone! I’m JoJo.I can’t believe I finally finished His Queen of Chaos. This is the first book I have ever written, and honestly, writing it was not easy. I work a full-time job and I’m also in school, so trying to find the time and energy to write was a struggle sometimes.I also kept changing the story every time I reread something and decided I didn’t like it. I rewrote scenes, changed details, and kept going back and forth because I wanted the story to feel right. There were times when I wasn’t sure if I would ever finish, so I’m really proud and grateful that I was able to complete it.I really hope you guys enjoyed Zariah and Malik’s story. Whether you loved it, disliked certain parts, or think there are things I could improve, please leave a comment and let me know. I appreciate all feedback because this is my first time writing a book, and your opinions can help me become a better writer.Thank you to everyone who took the time to read my story and make it all the way t

  • His Queen of Chaos    Epilogue: Crown Shared

ZariahThe west side clinic opened on a Thursday, because I'd decided all my good things would open on Thursdays now, the day the Auburn Avenue doors had first swung wide, the day my whole gray-and-gold life had tipped over from surviving into building. This one was brick too, and on a bus line too, and ugly in exactly the way Malik had promised, and I loved it exactly as much as he'd known I would. THE MARCUS BROOKS JUSTICE CLINIC, WEST read the gold letters on the glass, and by the time I cut the ribbon there were five families waiting inside on folding chairs, and a girl of maybe nineteen at the very back with a folder held to her chest like a shield and the specific frozen look of someone who'd just inherited a debt she never signed.I knew that look. I'd worn it, in a black dress, at a funeral, a whole life ago.I sat down next to the girl

  • His Queen of Chaos    Chapter 90: Never Again

Zariah’s POVI woke the morning after my engagement the way I'd woken most mornings for five months of nights: warm, wrecked, and pinned by a great deal of sleeping kingpin. The ring caught the gray Atlanta dawn coming through the tower's glass, and I lay still and looked at it on my own hand and let myself, for one private minute, not be sharp about anything. He'd brought me home from the gala and made good on the thing he'd whispered against my ear, twice, and then a third time, slow, near dawn, until I'd fallen asleep with my face in his chest and his heartbeat under my cheek and the whole gold city very far below. Now the light was coming up and he was still under me, one scarred arm banded across my back even in sleep, holding me the way he held everything he'd decided was his: completely, and like he expected someone to try to take it.

  • His Queen of Chaos    Chapter 89: Gala Crown

Zariah’s POVThe green dress made Rhee spill her drink again. It happened the exact same way it had at the foundation thing four months back, the detective, off duty and out of her element in the marble ballroom of the St. James Foundation gala, turning at the wrong moment as I came down the grand stair, and the champagne flute tilting a critical inch before Rhee caught it. This time I caught her eye across two hundred heads and smiled, and Rhee lifted the recovered glass a grudging half-inch in salute, one professional to another, and I thought, not for the first time, that the strangest friendship of my life was the homicide detective who'd once wanted to build a case out of my whole existence.Four hundred people. That was the number Malik had given me, and it had turned out to be true, because he was a man who was never wrong about the

  • His Queen of Chaos    Chapter 88: Six Months Later

ZariahThe Marcus Brooks Justice Clinic opened on a Thursday in a renovated storefront on Auburn Avenue, and by the time I cut the ribbon there were already three families waiting on the folding chairs inside. It was not a glamorous place. I'd fought Malik on that, hard, across a dinner table in the tower for the better part of a week. He'd wanted marble and glass and a Buckhead address, because he was a man who expressed love in square footage and could not fully believe that a thing built for people he cared about should look like it cost less than a car. I'd wanted brick, and a bus line, and a door that opened onto the actual street where the actual people who needed me actually lived, the girlfriends of men in the life, the mothers of boys who'd taken a charge for somebody higher up, the widows left holding debts they never signed. People like I'd been, once, in a black dress a

  • His Queen of Chaos    Chapter 87: Sleep and Series Hook

MalikShe slept like a woman who had put down a weight she'd been carrying since February.I lay awake beside her for a long time in the gold dark, propped on one elbow, watching the slow rise and fall of her breathing, the wild spill of her curls across my pillow, the total unguarded loosening of a face that had spent five months braced. I'd watched a great many people sleep in my life, mostly to make sure they never woke up, and I understood that this was a different kind of watching, the kind I'd have called weakness a year ago and now understood was the whole point of having survived anything at all.I should have slept too. Instead I found myself doing something I almost never did: I let myself feel the size of what I had, all at once, without flinching from it. I had a woman in my bed who'd closed her own exit. I had a name that was clean and a city that no longer wanted her dead. I had an empire that was still standing, smaller and grayer and more careful, but standing. I had,
