Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Arya Sue
Cecelia's POV

I looked away and said quietly, "I was tired of using the old password."

"You're lying."

The two quiet words made my nose sting. Jerome had always been quick to notice even the smallest changes in me.

I closed my eyes for a moment. Just as I was about to speak, there was another knock at the door.

Nora poked her head inside. "Sorry, could I wear the pajamas in the bathroom? I accidentally got my clothes wet."

She meant the matching set I'd just washed, the one that paired with what Jerome was already wearing.

I frowned, ready to point out that there were brand-new ones in the living room.

But Jerome simply brushed it off. "Sure. They're just pajamas." He brought Nora into the bedroom and picked up a throw blanket from the bed, draping it over her shoulders.

Then he said to me casually, "Nora gets cold easily. Let her use this thicker blanket. You can just grab a new one."

I looked into his eyes. "Jerome, those are my pajamas."

The room fell silent for a moment.

Nora lowered her head and mumbled, "It's okay. My clothes aren't that wet. I can just sleep in them."

She sounded hurt, as if I were the unreasonable one.

Jerome pressed his lips into a thin line, his expression turning cold. "Cece, Nora isn't a stranger. She just got back, so cut her some slack. I don't want to fight with you on our anniversary."

In the end, the matching pajamas went to Nora.

I couldn't sleep that night. Around midnight, I got up and decided to finish up the last of my work handover in the study.

As I passed through the living room, I saw our anniversary cake still sitting on the table with the candles unlit.

My birthday was also the anniversary of my parents' deaths. After they passed away, I stopped celebrating my birthday.

When Jerome and I first got together, he surprised me with a huge two-tier cake on our first anniversary. He smiled and said, "Cece, from now on, our anniversary is your birthday, too. I'll buy you a huge cake every single year."

He'd kept that promise for the first four years, and this was our fifth.

I'd bought the cake myself this year, hoping to celebrate with him. But in the end, he didn't even spare it a glance. He even forgot our yearly tradition of making a wish together.

I snapped back to reality, picked up the untouched cake, and threw it into the trash.

When I opened the door to the study, I found Nora sitting in front of my computer.

She jumped to her feet, her face turning pale. "I'm sorry, Cece. I couldn't sleep, so I came in to find something to watch. But I accidentally deleted one of your folders."

For a second, I just stood there. The next thing I knew, I was at the computer.

The folder containing all my design files was gone. I needed them for my handover. If I couldn't recover them, I'd have to redo every single piece of work from scratch. I anxiously opened the recycle bin. It was empty too.

I whipped around to look at Nora. "How could you accidentally delete a folder while looking for something to watch? And why is the recycle bin empty too?"

"Cece, I'm sorry..."

"Answer me," I demanded.

Nora's eyes turned red as she reached for my sleeve.

I instinctively stepped back. Her hand missed, and she lost her balance and fell to the floor. Her knee hit the corner of the desk, scraping the skin and leaving a red mark.

"What's going on?" Hearing the commotion, Jerome rushed in and found Nora on the floor. He immediately strode over to her and helped her up. After carefully checking her knee, he furrowed his brows.

Once, I accidentally twisted my ankle, and he frowned in that exact same way while checking it. I laughed and told him it didn't hurt that badly, but he carried me straight to the hospital, looking worried.

He said, "Cece, you don't have to act tough when I'm around."

  • His Real Anniversary Is With Her   Chapter 10

Third-Person POVJerome looked at Cecelia and realized he'd never felt like she was this far out of reach."You don't care about me," Cecelia said. "You're just not used to losing someone who treated you well."After Jerome returned home, he felt like a part of him was missing. At work, everything began to unravel. First, he lost a project he'd spent more than six months negotiating. Then, an important client's contract ran into problems. Right after that, a competitor poached most of the key members of the team he'd personally trained. In the past, he would have had a dozen ways to deal with any one of these messes. But now, he didn't even have the energy to care, let alone fix them.Every day, he went to the office, sat through meetings, and signed documents, feeling like a rusted machine grinding forward.Nora wasn't doing much better. She had only stayed by Jerome's side because of his position and promising career. Now that his career was falling apart, people around her ha

  • His Real Anniversary Is With Her   Chapter 9

Third-Person POVThere was no anger or resentment in Cecelia's eyes, only a faint weariness. It was as if she'd long since stopped expecting him to understand."Jerome, I've told you so many times. Every time you worked late, I stayed with you until midnight. Every time you got sick, I stayed by your side. Every time you were upset, I did everything I could to cheer you up."Every time you brought Nora to an event, I was the one cleaning up the mess afterward. And I was telling you what upset me. You just never listened."Jerome's eyes widened slightly. He wanted to refute her, but he couldn't think of anything to say. She was right. Every word she said was true.Cecelia had never explicitly said she loved him, but everything she did made it clear how much she cared. And what had he done? He had taken everything she did for granted, mistaken her silence for acceptance, and assumed that she'd wait for him forever. He stood there, trying hard to keep his composure, while everythin

Third-Person POVIt wasn't that Jerome didn't appreciate Cecelia. It was just that her care had always been so quiet and seamless that he took it for granted, assuming it would never disappear. She never brought anything up, even when she was upset, and he never asked. It left a distance between them that looked comfortable on the surface but kept them apart. He knew Cecelia loved him. He'd assumed she would always be there, waiting for him to sort out the mess in his life and finally face the problems between them. He had never imagined she would leave, much less walk away so decisively. The plane hit turbulence as it passed through the clouds, and the cabin jolted violently several times. A passenger nearby let out a nervous gasp.Jerome leaned back in his seat with his eyes closed, but the same image of Cecelia leaving with her luggage kept replaying in his mind. It seemed like she'd wanted to say something, but he hadn't looked up then, and the moment had passed before he real

Third-Person POVCecelia had been gone for three months and 17 days. Jerome knew the exact number, though he didn't want to admit that he did.He hadn't deleted her number or their messages, so he could still scroll back through their old chat.Cecelia had never been much of a texter. Her messages were always brief like "Okay", "Got it", "Drive safe", or "Have you eaten?"He had never bothered to really look at those texts back then. Now, every so often, he would scroll through their old conversation and read them again. Somehow, every word seemed to carry a message he had failed to understand at the time. The next time Jerome heard about Cecelia was from someone else a few months later. He happened to run into one of her former coworkers at a business cocktail party. After exchanging a few pleasantries, the guy casually said, "Did you hear? Cecelia's getting married next month."Jerome's hand froze around his wineglass, and the wine inside sloshed against the glass. "What did

Third-Person POVJerome stood there stunned, barely able to keep the smile on his face.He immediately messaged HR to confirm what he'd just heard from Cecelia's coworker. He read their response three times, making sure he hadn't misread a single word. Cecelia had quit and had someone else handle the paperwork for her.He even called HR, then a few of his colleagues, and everyone told him the same thing. Cecelia had really left the country. His knuckles turned white as his grip tightened around the phone, and the smile slowly faded from his face.On the drive home, Jerome drove recklessly, flooring the gas as the engine roared.Nora sat in the passenger seat, her fingers instinctively tightening around the seat belt. She had known Jerome for years, but she had never seen him look this furious, his jaw set in a rigid line.As much as she wanted to take a jab at Cecelia, she didn't dare. She swallowed the words at the tip of her tongue. In the end, she only murmured that it migh

Cecelia's POV"She destroyed my belongings. Why can't I call the police?" I shot back. After a brief, muffled exchange on the other end, Jerome's exhausted voice came through. "Come to the hospital right now and clear this up with the police. Tell them you made a false report and that Nora had nothing to do with it.""Why should I?" I asked.Through the phone, I could faintly hear Nora's voice break. "Jerome, are they really going to arrest me? I'm so scared…"Jerome's reply cut back in, his voice hard and uncompromising. "Then I'm taking back your mom's burial plot. Whether you come or not is up to you."My fingers trembled.I had begged Jerome to use his connections to secure that plot for me. It was meant for my mom, but the title and all the paperwork were in Jerome's name. My mom had lived a hard life. That scenic burial plot was the one nice thing I could give her after she was gone. With less than two hours before my flight, I went to the hospital.I told the police t
