Chapter 3

Author: Arya Sue
Cecelia's POV

Jerome was still just as quick to worry, only now it was for someone else.

Nora's tears kept falling. "Cece, I really didn't mean to delete your files. Please forgive me."

Jerome's expression faltered when he heard that she'd deleted my files, but the hesitation disappeared the moment he saw Nora crying. He frowned at me. "Cece, it's not that big a deal."

Apparently, it was just a small thing to him.

I said quietly, "I need to submit those files tomorrow morning. If they're gone, I'll have to redo everything from scratch."

His voice hardened. "Then redo them. Cece, enough. You've been targeting Nora all night."

I opened my mouth, but no sound came out.

Jerome didn't look at me again. He simply scooped Nora into his arms and headed for the door.

Nestled in his arms, Nora said softly, "Jerome, maybe you should stay with Cece. I'm fine."

He didn't even look back. "She can handle herself. Getting you to the hospital is more important."

Then they were gone.

I stood alone in the silent room until my legs went numb. A moment later, my phone vibrated in my pocket.

It was a message from the overseas studio.

"Due to changes in the work arrangement, please sign your employment contract. Please note that once you sign, you'll be required to work in Voris for at least two years. Do you accept?"

I stared at the screen for a long time before typing my reply. "Yes, I accept."

Jerome didn't come home that night, and I didn't call him either. I stayed up all night and finally finished recreating every single sketch from scratch.

The next morning, after handing over the last of my files, I walked out of the office and spotted Jerome's car parked by the curb.

When he saw me, he put his phone away and smiled. "All done?"

He walked over and opened the passenger door for me. "I've booked a table at that restaurant you've been wanting to try. If we leave now, we'll get there right on time."

I stared at the designer bag sitting on the passenger seat without saying a word.

Jerome smiled. "It's for you. You've always loved this brand, right?"

It was the latest release, with a waitlist that seemed endless. Even with the money to pay for it, getting one wasn't easy.

But that was Jerome. Whenever I mentioned I wanted something, he'd always find a way to get it for me.

I just put the bag in the back seat after I got in. That was when I noticed a woman's jacket that I'd never seen before. It had probably been left behind when he drove Nora to the hospital the night before.

Jerome fastened my seat belt for me, then adjusted the AC to my preferred 78 degrees Fahrenheit. The dashboard in front of me automatically started playing my playlist.

Those little things he did without thinking stirred an unexpected bitterness in me. I turned to him and took a deep breath. "Jerome, let's br—"

Before I could finish, his phone rang.

Nora's tearful voice came through the speaker. "Jerome, what do I do? The glass display case in the study shattered, and my hand hurts so bad..."

My heart skipped a beat. Locked inside that glass case were all my mom's design sketches. They were the only things she had left me.

I didn't know how I made it home. Just before we went inside, Jerome grabbed my hand and tried to smooth things over. "Nora didn't do it on purpose. Cece, you—"

I yanked my hand away and said through gritted teeth, "Those were the last things my mom left me. If anything happened to them, I'd never forgive either of you!"

Jerome froze.

I sprinted toward the study. The moment I pushed open the door, the last bit of hope I'd been holding onto vanished.

Shattered glass covered the floor, and my mom's precious sketches were scattered everywhere.

I dropped to my knees amid the wreckage and reached for the sketches with trembling hands. A shard of glass cut my knee, and blood quickly welled from the wound.

"You're just not used to losing someone who treated you well."After Jerome returned home, he felt like a part of him was missing. At work, everything began to unravel. First, he lost a project he'd spent more than six months negotiating. Then, an important client's contract ran into problems. Right after that, a competitor poached most of the key members of the team he'd personally trained. In the past, he would have had a dozen ways to deal with any one of these messes. But now, he didn't even have the energy to care, let alone fix them.Every day, he went to the office, sat through meetings, and signed documents, feeling like a rusted machine grinding forward.Nora wasn't doing much better. She had only stayed by Jerome's side because of his position and promising career. Now that his career was falling apart, people around her ha

  • His Real Anniversary Is With Her   Chapter 9

Third-Person POVThere was no anger or resentment in Cecelia's eyes, only a faint weariness. It was as if she'd long since stopped expecting him to understand."Jerome, I've told you so many times. Every time you worked late, I stayed with you until midnight. Every time you got sick, I stayed by your side. Every time you were upset, I did everything I could to cheer you up."Every time you brought Nora to an event, I was the one cleaning up the mess afterward. And I was telling you what upset me. You just never listened."Jerome's eyes widened slightly. He wanted to refute her, but he couldn't think of anything to say. She was right. Every word she said was true.Cecelia had never explicitly said she loved him, but everything she did made it clear how much she cared. And what had he done? He had taken everything she did for granted, mistaken her silence for acceptance, and assumed that she'd wait for him forever. He stood there, trying hard to keep his composure, while everythin

Third-Person POVIt wasn't that Jerome didn't appreciate Cecelia. It was just that her care had always been so quiet and seamless that he took it for granted, assuming it would never disappear. She never brought anything up, even when she was upset, and he never asked. It left a distance between them that looked comfortable on the surface but kept them apart. He knew Cecelia loved him. He'd assumed she would always be there, waiting for him to sort out the mess in his life and finally face the problems between them. He had never imagined she would leave, much less walk away so decisively. The plane hit turbulence as it passed through the clouds, and the cabin jolted violently several times. A passenger nearby let out a nervous gasp.Jerome leaned back in his seat with his eyes closed, but the same image of Cecelia leaving with her luggage kept replaying in his mind. It seemed like she'd wanted to say something, but he hadn't looked up then, and the moment had passed before he real

Jerome knew the exact number, though he didn't want to admit that he did.He hadn't deleted her number or their messages, so he could still scroll back through their old chat.Cecelia had never been much of a texter. Her messages were always brief like "Okay", "Got it", "Drive safe", or "Have you eaten?"He had never bothered to really look at those texts back then. Now, every so often, he would scroll through their old conversation and read them again. Somehow, every word seemed to carry a message he had failed to understand at the time. The next time Jerome heard about Cecelia was from someone else a few months later. He happened to run into one of her former coworkers at a business cocktail party. After exchanging a few pleasantries, the guy casually said, "Did you hear? Cecelia had quit and had someone else handle the paperwork for her.He even called HR, then a few of his colleagues, and everyone told him the same thing. Cecelia had really left the country. His knuckles turned white as his grip tightened around the phone, and the smile slowly faded from his face.On the drive home, Jerome drove recklessly, flooring the gas as the engine roared.Nora sat in the passenger seat, her fingers instinctively tightening around the seat belt. She had known Jerome for years, but she had never seen him look this furious, his jaw set in a rigid line.As much as she wanted to take a jab at Cecelia, she didn't dare. Cecelia's POV"She destroyed my belongings. Why can't I call the police?" I shot back. After a brief, muffled exchange on the other end, Jerome's exhausted voice came through. "Come to the hospital right now and clear this up with the police. Tell them you made a false report and that Nora had nothing to do with it.""Why should I?" I asked.Through the phone, I could faintly hear Nora's voice break. "Jerome, are they really going to arrest me? I'm so scared…"Jerome's reply cut back in, his voice hard and uncompromising. "Then I'm taking back your mom's burial plot. Whether you come or not is up to you."My fingers trembled.I had begged Jerome to use his connections to secure that plot for me. It was meant for my mom, but the title and all the paperwork were in Jerome's name. My mom had lived a hard life. That scenic burial plot was the one nice thing I could give her after she was gone. With less than two hours before my flight, I went to the hospital.I told the police t
