Chapter 2

Author: Ada
After I died, for reasons I still don't understand, my soul drifted over to Graeme.

I watched him just finish putting Lucien to sleep, his hand patting the boy's back gently. He lowered his voice and asked Darius. "Is Evelyn sorry yet? It's her birthday today, too. Order her a cake. She's been looking forward to her thirtieth for a long time."

My heart clenched like someone had reached into my chest and twisted. So he did remember.

Darius kept his head down, not daring to look up. "Alpha, Luna was still throwing a fit just now. Should we let her out now?"

Graeme's expression shifted. His voice went cold. "Looks like I've been spoiling her too much. That's why she keeps pushing boundaries. Let her sit in there and think. A Luna this reckless—how's she supposed to run an entire pack?" He squeezed Lucien's hand, his face full of tenderness. "When she's ready to apologize to Ayana and Lucien, then she can come out."

Darius hesitated. "So the cake—still strawberry?"

Graeme paused for a second. "Forget it. In a few days, when she realizes her mistake and says sorry to Lucien and Ayana, I'll make it up to her."

Last time, Lucien pushed me down the stairs. I clutched my cramping belly, my face going white from pain. Graeme panicked. He scooped me up and carried me to the couch. "Evelyn, I swear—whoever did this to you, I'll make them pay."

Then Lucien admitted it was just a prank. And Graeme let it slide. Brushed it off with a few lazy words. "Good thing you're not hurt. I don't know what I'd do otherwise. Lucien didn't mean it. He's just a poor pup who misses having a father. He already knows he was wrong. You're the Luna. You should be more forgiving."

That night, I stared at the two pink lines on the pregnancy test, my whole body shaking with fear. One step. One step away from losing my baby.

When I grabbed the test and went to show Graeme, I heard Lucien calling him "Daddy" in that sweet little voice. Ayana stood nearby, all timid and trembling. "Alpha, Lucien just wants to know what a father's love feels like. You don't mind, do you?"

Graeme ruffled Lucien's hair, his smile dripping with affection. "Not at all."

Later, he skipped out on me, passed out at home, to go to Lucien's parent-teacher conference. I spent three days in the hospital. The doctors called him to come stay with me. He never showed. Just one phone call. "I got you the best healer in the pack. I'm not a professional. What's the point of me being there?"

He always put Ayana and Lucien first. Always. When Lucien got hurt, Graeme was at his side every single day, taking him to treatments. But me? He didn't even ask how I was doing.

I asked him too. Again and again. The answer was always the same. "You're stronger, Evelyn. Ayana was abandoned. I only feel sorry for her."

My soul floated in the air above them. I watched Ayana lean her head against Graeme's shoulder, and my heart twisted all over again. So even the dead can still feel pain.

I felt like a clown. Pathetic. Laughable.

"Let me go check on Evelyn—see if she's learned her lesson yet—" Graeme started to get up, but Ayana grabbed his arm, her voice shaking. "What if she blames me for taking you today? I'm so scared she'll hurt Lucien again. Can you please stay with us?"

Graeme chuckled and traced his finger across the tip of her nose. "Silly girl. I won't let anyone make you suffer. I'm staying right here. Not going anywhere. Not until Evelyn apologizes to both of you."

Their crime was exposed for all to see. Ayana and Lucien became outcasts—spat on, cursed, hunted by every wolf who knew their names. Two wounded rogues with nowhere to go.Passing wolves hurled stones at Lucien's legs. He stumbled and fell, his silver-burned wound splitting open again, flesh and blood spilling through. Ayana threw herself over him to shield him—but the wolves tore into her. Claws ripped through her skin like paper. After they left, Lucien turned on her, fury blazing through his tears. "This is your fault! You just had to kill Aunt Evelyn! And you lied to me! You said my hand would heal! It's never going to heal! Never!"He walked away from her that day. Ayana never saw her son again. She died frozen under a bridge, her body covered in wounds, alone. Lucien—without treatment, infection spreading through his hand—died in the snow that same winter night.Graeme locked himself in the basement for ten straight days. Stared at the bloodstains on the door until his vision blu

Graeme stared at her in disbelief. "I loved Evelyn. I never loved you—I only pitied you! Why did you do this? Do you have any idea—you killed the only person I ever truly loved. I'll make you pay for her life!"Ayana let out a bitter laugh. "Graeme, you're the one who locked her in that basement. You killed the woman who loved you. So why are you pointing fingers at me?"Graeme's fists clenched so tight his knuckles went white. His eyes burned red. "You're insane."Ayana looked at him coldly. "Insane? So are you. You killed your own mate."His fist swung. It connected with Ayana's face. Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth. She wiped it away with the back of her hand. She thought Graeme just needed someone to blame. Someone to play the villain. She could be that person. "Evelyn died screaming. It sounded beautiful."She pulled out her phone and played the audio. My voice—raw, desperate, pleading. "Graeme, I'm sorry... I don't love you anymore, just let me out... please... Please

Graeme's Beta, Lorenzo, got to the bottom of it fast. Lorenzo laid it all out. "It was Darius. He forced the spell on Luna under Ayana's orders. That's why you didn't feel a thing while she was burning alive in that fire. As for the video—Darius faked it. He panicked. Tried to cover his tracks. The witch confirmed it. Luna was three months pregnant. The baby burned with her. If she hadn't been spellbound, she would've shifted. The child would've lived..."I floated above them, watching Graeme's eyes turn crimson, and pressed my hand to my flat stomach. Yeah. There was a baby there once. I almost got to hold my own child.Graeme grabbed the whip from Lorenzo's hand and brought it down on Darius's back. Blood bloomed across his skin in an instant. Darius hung from the rack like a dead dog. Graeme struck him a dozen more times—still not enough. He drove his boot into Darius's leg and snapped it. Darius screamed, raw and animalistic."Evelyn was good to you. Why the hell would you do this

Graeme shoved Darius aside—the man who'd tried to block the bloodstains—and peered into the basement. Empty. Nothing but a pile of ash.If he'd come half a day earlier, he might have found my body. But it had been too long. My remains had already burned to nothing. He reached out and touched the blood on the door. Brought his fingers to his nose. Inhaled. "This is Evelyn's blood. But she's a brown wolf. Fire shouldn't have touched her. Did she really die?"He muttered to himself, his eyes dimming for a moment—a flicker of shock—but his composure snapped back just as fast. "No. There's no way she's dead. This is just one of her schemes. She must have faked her death to get me to reconcile."I remembered the first time I'd pulled something like that. Not long after we got together, a white wolf from the pack confessed to him in public. Right in front of me. I stood there, my chest tight and sour. So I disappeared.Graeme went insane looking for me. He showed up at my doorstep, terrified

Ayana held Lucien close, her face twisted with displeasure. "But Lucien is my only son. Are you really going to let the person who hurt him walk away? You said he was your heart and soul."Lucien was her only son. Her treasure. But what about the baby in my belly? Wasn't that my heart and soul too? Just thinking about how he never even got to be born—how he died right along with me—my chest caved in.Normally, Graeme would've let his anger flare. Blamed me. Punished me. But this time, his face went dark. His voice sharpened. "Evelyn is my mate. She's the Luna of this whole pack. I already apologized for her. What more do you want? If it weren't for Evelyn, you two would still be packless rogues."Ayana whimpered softly. "Alpha, you promised to take care of us. If the Blackwood Pack won't have us... then we might as well not live. Can you stay? Just stay with us—please?""Enough!" Graeme's face was stone, but his voice softened. "I've already hired the best doctors for Lucien. He'll be

Graeme clutched his head, veins bulging across his forehead, eyes rimmed red. "Evelyn is dead? My mate is gone? How is that possible?"Darius stepped forward and pulled up a doctored surveillance video on his tablet. In it, a woman who looked eerily like me was stealing a forbidden spell book from the witch's archive. "Alpha, I couldn't find Luna. But I found the truth. She stole the witch's forbidden grimoire. Cast a mate-erasure spell on you—designed to make you suffer as if you'd lost your fated mate. She's a powerful brown wolf. She wouldn't go down that easily."Graeme's brow furrowed. He studied Darius with half-lidded suspicion. "You're right. Evelyn wouldn't die that easily. But she's always been kind-hearted. She'd never dabbled in forbidden—"Ayana cut him off. "Alpha, but if it wasn't for Evelyn, would Lucien even be in that operating room?"Graeme looked at Ayana's tear-swollen eyes. His gaze dropped. He chose to believe. Finally, he turned and barked at Darius. "Tell her t
