Chapter 1

The moment the call connected, I heard my father's steady voice.

"Evelyn, do you mean that?"

My voice shook. The gunshot wound in my chest made every breath a struggle.

But I forced the words out through the pain. "I mean it, Dad."

The line went quiet for a long time.

His breathing grew heavy. The man who'd always stayed calm under fire sounded like any father who needed to hear his daughter say it one more time.

"Evelyn, you won't change your mind?"

I looked around the empty hospital room. "I won't.

"Dad, I've really thought this through."

"Good!"

He paused. "But I'm in the middle of an important cross-border deal and I can't get away. I'll send my assistant to bring you home.

"Evelyn, just sit tight and don't worry about anything."

Hearing that, I couldn't stop the tears.

He must have heard me sniffle, because his voice went hard.

"Why are you crying? Who hurt you?"

"N-nothing."

I didn't want my father to know that his little girl, who used to be so afraid of pain, had taken a bullet for her husband.

I especially didn't want him to know I was lying in a hospital room with no one by my side.

I said quietly, "Just bring me home first. We'll talk about everything else when I get there."

"All right."

My father didn't push. But knowing him, I was sure he'd find out all of it sooner or later.

As soon as I hung up, I groaned in pain.

The anesthesia had completely worn off, and the wound burned in waves.

I gasped for breath, trying to steady myself.

Just then, the door opened and Alvis walked in.

My face went cold. "What are you doing here?"

He acted like he hadn't heard the disgust in my voice and hurried over to my bed.

He sounded worried. "Evelyn, are you okay?"

I curled my lip at this two-faced man.

Yesterday, I'd barely opened my eyes in this bed when he put divorce papers in front of me.

"Althea has three months to live, at most. She wants to marry me.

"Evelyn, let's get a divorce."

Back then, I hadn't taken it seriously.

"Alvis, is this some kind of joke? How does Althea even have the nerve to show her face around you?"

I struggled to lift my hand and reach for him.

But Alvis pulled away, frowning, and took two steps back.

"Evelyn, I'm serious. Althea didn't know any better back then.

"She got used. She did a lot of things wrong, but she regrets them now.

"All she wants is to marry me. I can't say no to her."

When I heard that, I jerked upright, pain or no pain.

I didn't care that the drainage tube tugged at my wound or that blood was seeping out. I grabbed the divorce papers and tore them to shreds in a frenzy.

"Alvis! Do you even hear yourself?"

I screamed, shaking all over.

Alvis just watched me fall apart, his eyes cold.

Finally, he said, "I'll make it up to you, Evelyn."

When my wound reopened and they wheeled me back into surgery, he walked away without a second look.

And now here he was, playing the good guy.

I turned my head away in disgust. "I'll sign the divorce papers. Just go."

"Evelyn, don't lie to me."

Alvis frowned and pointed at the scraps on the floor. "You tore up the last set. This time I'm going to watch you sign.

"I know you're upset, but once Althea's gone, I'll make it up to you."

His tone softened, and he reached for my cheek. He spoke as casually as if we were deciding what to have for lunch.

"The Sartori family's resources, businesses, shares. Just say the word, and I'll give you whatever you want."

He said it as if he were offering me the best deal of my life.

As if my feelings, our marriage, and the bullet I'd taken for him all had a price tag.

But I'd given up my family name, my inheritance, and the future my father had planned for me.

Eight years ago, I'd left the Lauretti family for him. No matter how my parents pleaded, I'd refused to go back.

I'd even risked my own life to take a bullet for him.

I hadn't done any of it for what he could give me.

Looking at his face made me sick.

I was done with this marriage. I was done with him.

"No! No way!"Before Henry could say anything, Alvis cut in. "Evelyn, I was wrong. I was so wrong."You can punish me, but you can't take the Sartori family! My grandfather passed it down to us. "I'll make Althea apologize to you! I'm a victim in all this too! She lied to me, she lied to everyone! Can't you forgive me? I was wrong, I was so wrong!"Althea knelt there, her hair a mess, looking more pathetic than I'd ever seen her.She pried Alvis's hands off her and forced herself upright. "I didn't do anything wrong!"All I did was love Alvis! What's wrong with that?"You're the ones who chose to believe me! You're the ones who wanted to get rid of Evelyn so I could marry Alvis..."Before she

Several people got out.I narrowed my eyes. I knew every one of them: the Sartori family's most influential shareholders. What are they doing here?Have they come to back Alvis and settle scores with the Lauretti family?Alvis seemed to think so too. A fawning, respectful smile spread across his face.He turned to one of them, Henry Sartori. "Uncle Henry, what are you doing here?"Henry ignored him. He looked up, saw me, and bowed from where he stood."Ms. Lauretti."He spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear. "There's something I have to tell you in person."He took a file out of his briefcase."This is Althea's complete medical file from the hospital. I had someone look into it. She doesn't have cancer at all."Her records are fake. She bribed a doctor at the hospital to forge them."The smile froze on Alvis's face.He stared in disbelief. "Althea, is that true?"Althea froze. She clearly hadn't expected her secret to come out so soon. She took a step back, her lips trembling."No..

"Evelyn, are you sure you want to face this yourself?""Mom, I'm sure."I heard the worry in her voice and gave her a reassuring smile. My father came over, took my hand, and gave me a file."Every deal the Sartori family has made in the past three months. By the time my father carried me out of the hospital, I was in so much pain I was barely conscious.Seeing how badly I was hurt, he ordered his men to arrange a private jet and flew me straight to a hospital in Switzerland.I could hear my father's voice. I wanted to say something, but I didn't even have the strength to open my mouth. All I could feel was his hand on my forehead as he murmured in my ear, "Sleep, sweetheart. You're safe now."When I woke up again, I was in a hospital room I'd never seen before.Snowy Alpine peaks filled the view outside. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, warming the room.I moved my fingers, and a nurse came right over. "Ms. Lauretti, thank goodness, you're awake! I'll go get the doctor right now."Soon, a serious-looking, middle-aged man came in with several others. They were the specialists my father had brought in for me.Dr. Lehmann examined my wound and sounded relieved. "Ms. Lauretti, your wound was badly infected. Luckily, y

The door swung wide open.My father walked in, wearing a long black coat. His eyes went straight to me. He strode to my bed, bent down, and pulled me into his arms. "Evelyn."At the sound of his familiar voice, the tears came, and I reached out weakly."Dad!"I buried my face against him like I had as a little girl, letting him feel everything I couldn't say.My father stroked my hair, his voice low. "Dad's here. You don't have to be scared anymore."Behind us, Alvis sounded stunned. "Don Lauretti? What are you doing here?"My father ignored him. Only after gently wiping my tears did he straighten up and look at Alvis."If I didn't come, were you just going to keep pushing my daughter around?""No!"Alvis rushed to deny it. "Don Lauretti, this is just a private family matter!""A family matter?"My father gave a cold laugh and looked at Alvis with contempt. "What kind of family matter leaves my daughter weak in a hospital bed?"What kind of family matter forces my daughter to give up h
