Ariana puts on the best clothes she finds in her wardrobe. Her choice differs from what she wore yesterday during the ball.
“Where are you going dressed up like that?” Daria asks, seeing her daughter put on the girlish dress which she has in her wardrobe but until today, never wore it. Over her shoulders, she puts a simple silky cloak just to keep the wind away from her skin. Although, as a werewolf, she can’t feel the cold, the wind isn’t always likable.
“Back to the castle. I want to talk to Marcus,” Ariana replies with resolution. Her mother blinks several times, unable to process the words her daughter just said.
“Who is Marcus?” Daria asked immediately. She knows Ariana spent the night with the Lycan king, the ruler of the country. Not with some Marcus. It takes a minute for Daria to realize Marcus is the Lycan king’s given name.
“The King. He told me yesterday to call him by his name. We are mates.” Ariana speaks with such resolution, leaving her mother in utter shock. Ariana didn’t tell her they were mates. She thought her daughter had spent the night with the Lycan king because of a dream she had had since childhood. Ariana always wished to see him and when she finally had the chance, of course, she had to take advantage of it, but mates? Daria expected anything but this.
“I thought he sent you back home, so why are you going back? What exactly happened yesterday?” She knows exactly what happened between them. Ariana didn’t need to explain that to her mother, but Daria didn’t understand why her daughter wanted to go back after he sent her back once he took what he wanted. The same thing he did to every other girl before Ariana.
“I think there must be some sort of misunderstanding. I am his mate! I should stay by his side. Maybe the maid in the castle didn’t know that and sent me back home.” Ariana argues with her mother, trying to find an excuse for them to send her home. Daria shook her head, sadness in her eyes. The naivety of her daughter can’t be this severe. She raised her daughter to be smarter than this. At least Daria always thought Ariana would recognize when someone is playing with her, lying to her or using her only for her own amusement.
“Do you really think so?” Daria asked sternly. The tone of her voice changes as she resumes a different approach to her daughter’s stupidity.
Everyone around the capital knew about the Lycan king’s plays. He always used the young girls which were sent to him and then simply sent them back when he got enough. The Lycan king wasn’t someone she could just go and talk to as she wanted. Not even if they were mates. If he ever cared about such a thing, there would have been a queen sitting on the throne a long time ago. As a king, he had abundant mates around the country and outside the borders of his territory, to assure the continuity of the lineage. Ariana wasn’t the only one who wished to claim him, but most likely the stupidest one to think she could do so.
“Of course, mother. I am his mate! He can’t just send his mate away. That’s not how the mate works. Yesterday, we spent a beautiful night together, and he told me to call him by his name. Sure, he must have felt the bond between us. Why else would he stay with me the whole night?” Ariana couldn’t properly understand the reality of her situation and the nature of the Lycan king. What happened to her happened to many other girls in the capital, and Daria had to break this down to her daughter to make her understand.
“Oh, honey. That’s what he does. Every girl you watched entering the castle spent a night or two with him. Once he got enough, he sent them home the same as he sent you. It wasn’t the maid who made the mistake. She followed the order given by the king himself. I am truly sorry for you to be his mate, but trust me, this bond won’t last. If you keep pestering him, he will openly reject you and break the bond, but he won’t admit it. Maybe if we are rich with status and hold a position in the capital, he would at least consider you as a concubine, but not as we are now. In the capital, we are nobodies. You are nobody to him. He saw yesterday an easy prey exactly because of the bond, so he tasted you, but for him, that’s all there is to it. There won’t be anything else.” Daria tried to explain to her daughter the situation as gently as possible. It was breaking her heart to see the dream of her daughter shattering. The tears which appear in Ariana’s eyes carry stones, slowly settling into Daria’s heart. She feared precisely something like this would occur when they were entering the castle yesterday. When he came to their table and asked Ariana for a dance, Daria feared precisely this would happen.
“But… I am his mate. We are mates.” Ariana felt her heart slowly breaking into a million pieces. She refuses to believe her mother. This can’t be happening. Not to her.
Ariana rushes out of the door and straight up the road to the castle. Her mother tries to stop her, but Ariana ignores her, rushing through the crowded streets, hoping she loses her mother on the way. After a few turns, the voice of her mother calling her name disappears. Her feet carried her straight to the castle, to the main gate through which they entered yesterday with the carriage. The guards refuse her entry and force her to turn and leave, but Ariana stubbornly fights with them.
“Let her come in.” The steward suddenly appeared by the gate, ordering the two guards to let Ariana enter. She had tears in her eyes from fighting the guards. First, she had to argue with her mother and then these two stopped her from visiting her mate. “Thank you,” she slightly bowed her head to the steward, expressing her gratitude. He replies to her in a similar gesture before he leads her into the castle. His steps slowly lead Ariana to the throne room, which Marcus uses to accept visitors, if there are any. Upon entering the room, Ariana sees the Lycan king sitting high on his throne, staring coldly at the daring girl in front of his eyes. “What brings you back? The ball finished yesterday, and the gates of the castle are closed to the commoners during the year.” The tone in his voice explains almost everything. In particular, the word “commoners” rings in Ariana’s ears like bells on the highest tower in the capital, which always announced the danger when there were attackers o
Ariana’s parents worry sick of their daughter. Since she has returned from the castle, Ariana refuses to eat. For the past few days, she has stayed in her room, locked, refusing to even meet with her best friend. Her father came to ask her to let him in several times, yet he heard nothing but silence coming from his daughter’s room. When he listened carefully, he could hear silent sobs, assuring him of his daughter’s presence. Her tears and silent sobs break his heart, but there is nothing he can do to help her. Ariana must go through this alone, but once the pain from the rejection passes, she will feel better. Peter was sure about it. “How is she?” Daria asks her husband as he joins her in the kitchen after another unsuccessful attempt to speak to his daughter. Peter shrugs, desperate to help his only child. “As long as she is alive, it will pass,” Daria assures him upon seeing his long face. Peter was always worried about his daughter. It was one of his best qualities as a father
The change in her image allowed Ariana to start anew after she learned the lesson of her life. She not only cut her hair short, changed her wardrobe, but she also worked on her personality. The way the Lycan king treated her opened her eyes to the vast world of rudeness and trickery which she hadn’t seen before. Several weeks had passed and Ariana forgot about her broken heart, immersing herself in the activities of her daily life. “How was your day?” Daria asks the moment her daughter joins her in the kitchen. Daria came from the castle earlier today. The family from her husband’s side should arrive later in the evening. Daria wants to make sure they feel welcome and warm after a long journey. Peter’s family lived far away on the northern border of their country. “Good. There wasn’t much work, so my boss let me go home earlier. Do you need my help with anything?” Ariana offers to assist her mother, although her mother handles everything perfectly. Years of experience of working in a
As Ariana and her mother worked in the kitchen, preparing the pastries, meals and sweets, the time flew faster than they would have expected. It took little time before Ariana’s father arrived home with the guests behind him. “Welcome.” Daria greeted them, seeing their long faces. Gregor was the only one keeping a neutral expression on his face, while Jeff apparently didn’t swallow the fact that he lost this house and, with it, his footing in the capital. He would gain an immense advantage in business by having a base right in the capital. The size of the house seemed to greatly disappoint Julie, her husband, and even her two daughters. Daria sees the disapproval of the home in their eyes as they are scanning the place from ceiling to floor. The thought Julia gave to the house told Daria everything she needed to know about her coming. “Those are my cousins?” Ariana asked. She can recognize the girls even after not seeing them for ten years, but she hopes to start a conversation and e
“Is everything as you wanted?” Daria faces Julia, asking her before she leaves the apartment. During the past few days, they had made arrangements together to furnish the apartment to Julia’s satisfaction. Of course, Daria let Julia pay extra for everything she wanted. Peter’s brothers keep bothering them regarding the house, but as long as the house is under Ariana’s name, neither of them can do anything about it. “It’s good enough.” Julia replies to her. She would expect a better home for her and her family, but this is all they could get in the capital. They lack the footing in a city they have never visited before. Julia is painfully aware of it. That was also the reason she came nearly a year before the ball. She has a lot of things to prepare before she can present her daughters to the king. Daria grabs the last of her belongings which were still in the adjacent apartment and leaves Julia alone in her new home. Having her around is not something Daria would wish for, but it’s n
“You are graduating soon. Did you think about what to do next?” The whole family sits around the table to eat breakfast as every Sunday, the only day they can eat together. During the weekdays, Daria works at the castle, leaving home before sunrise. Peter works all day as well. “I think you should try college. Art would be the best.” Peter spoke out loud the thoughts of his wife. She wanted to suggest exactly the same. They were both on the same page whenever they were talking about the future of their daughter or their family. Just as they were talking, Ariana suddenly stands up and runs to the bathroom. Before she left, Daria and her husband saw their daughter gauging. “I am sorry. I feel a little under the weather,” Ariana apologizes upon her return. Her father looks at her, worries all over his face. Sickness wasn’t something werewolves enjoyed, especially since it wasn’t usual for them. Daria looked skeptical, lost in her thoughts for a moment, as she considered various possibil
“Long time no see Daria. Someone is sick?” Therin greeted her with a bright smile on his lips. Several decades ago, these two were classmates at high school. At that time, Therin loved Daria and wished to marry her, but luck wasn’t on his side. He celebrated his eighteenth birthday a few weeks earlier than Daria, which let him understand they didn’t share a bond. It’s not like he couldn’t marry her just because they weren’t mates, but almost no one would marry right away without at least waiting a few years for their destined one. “Good morning, Therin. Can you please check up on my daughter? Her stomach is acting up.” Therin scans Ariana from head to toe. The shade of green on her face couldn’t be missed. Within a second, Therin's eyes return to Daria. Her face is like an open book. Therin recognizes what worried her immediately. “When was your period last time?” He asks directly, without hesitation. Although this wasn’t directly his specialization, most of the werewolf doctors coul
For the entire time on their way back home, Daria remains silent. Her mind works at full speed to figure out the way out of this situation. The Lycan king can’t ever know about Ariana’s pregnancy. In the best scenario, they would force her to stay in the castle. In the worst case, she will lose her child. That’s not something Daria would wish for her daughter to go through. “Mom. Can we please talk?” They were close to home when Ariana finally mustered the courage to speak to her mother. Daria unintentionally ignores her, lost in her own thoughts, reliving her fears. Ariana’s school suddenly became an issue. Of course, teachers and students would notice the growing bump, but Ariana can’t just stop attending school in the middle of her last year. That would be entirely nonsensical. Daria can’t see the light at the end of this misery. It wasn’t Ariana’s fault, but she got them into a difficult situation. Ariana enters the home right after her mother, ready to go upstairs, to her room,
