“What are you doing with my phone?”

Raine heart jerked in fear, he hanged up and quickly hid the phone beside him, turning around instantly.

“No…nothing”

“Ra….”

“I wasn't doing anything”

Raine snapped, his voice filled with fear

“Give me the phone then”

Raine didn't answer neither did he move from where he was, he stayed frozen in fear, his hand gripping the bed sheet tightly.

“Don't let me repeat myself Raine, give me the phone”

Daniel wasn't joking this time, his voice sounded cold.

Raine shakingly brought out the phone from where he hid it and placed it in Daniel's hand.

“I swear Daniel, I didn't mean to”

Daniel opened his phone and saw the call logs.

“You picked my call?”

It was the rule they both made, none were allowed to go through each others phone or picked each others calls for that matter. It would be counted as a breach of contract.

“Dan, it was ringing and you were sleeping, I..I ju…”

“Shut up”

Daniel snapped, he sounded angry.

His eyes already red with fury.

Raine flinched back his body going cold.

Daniel grabbed his jaw, squeezing it tightly.

“What did I tell you about taking my calls…”

“If you try that shit again, I won't hesitate to terminate that stupid contract.”

Raine eyes welled up with tears, his body shaking.

“Daniel please…”

“Don't, I don't need your excuses”

Daniel let go of his jaw and stood up from the bed, he picked up his jacket.

“Don't expect me for the next few days and also remember this, the agreement was sex and nothing else”

“The next time you try to behave like my lover, I will ruin you”

Tears fell from Raine eyes, his body shaking and hicupps getting worse.

Daniel didn't looked back at him when he walked away and slam the door behind him.

……..

Damien anger was out of control.

He parked his car and got out as he arrived at the palace.

He was already angry before he got to Raine's place, waking up and seeing Raine pick his call intensified his anger.

They already talked it through from the start, going through each others phone was a breach of contract.

He wasn't only angry, he was furious but his anger wasn't directed directly at Raine.

His parents had proposed the marriage with Betty again, he had told them times without number that he wasn't interested but they wouldn't listen.

They spread out rumours about him being engaged to Betty without his consent, he confronted them and they used it against him when he stormed out angrily out of the palace and went to Raine's apartment.

He hadn't meant to snapped at Raine that way but he couldn't keep it in.

Raine had broken one of their rules.

…..

The next few days were hell for Raine.

Daniel didn't visit as he had said.

Raine tried calling him, he didn't pick, he texted him but was left on read.

He didn't know what to do, he was heart broken, couldn't even focus at school.

Cole noticed and decided to confront him one afternoon in school.

They were on their way to the cafeteria when Cole blurted out.

“Did Daniel dump you?”

Raine froze and glared at cole, “what do you mean.”

We're not dating.”

“Yeah, you're not dating him but you're in love with him.”

Cole said, sounding serious.

Raine snapped, his voice shaking

“I'm in love with no one”

“Till when will you keep denying it ray”

“I’m not denying anything” Raine looked away, tears falling down his face.

The frustration was getting to him.

Cole signed out and pulled him into his arm.

The sound of agony teared out from Raine's throat, his chest tightened in pain as he cried In the middle of the campus while hugging his best friend.

Ten minutes later, Raine had calmed down, they were sitting on a bench when Raine started to explain what transpired between him and daniel.

“So he hasn't come back nor pick your calls since that day and it almost two weeks now”

“Yes”

Raine whispered

“Leave him alone for the meantime ray”

“You both has been together for three years, even if it's in secret. He's not supposed to treat you that way.”

“I don't know what to do.”

Raine whispered his head low.

“Leave him alone, don't text, don't call.”

“But….”

“No ray, I mean it, let him come back to his senses himself.”

Raine followed his best friend word.

He stopped calling, stopped texting but it was really hard.

The only thing he has been doing was going to school then coming back home to sleep.

Raine was watching TV around 11pm when his doorbell rang.

“Hold on I'm coming.”

“See the time this stupid cole is coming after I already called him like six hours ago”

Raine scoffed biting his lips slightly, something he only does when he was anxious.

He walked towards the door and opened it.

“Cole you are very stupid, this is the 5pm you said you will get here?”

Cole laughed his voice echoing down the hallway

“Whatever, just come in”

“No, no let me just drop your food”

Cole quickly dropped the food and rushed back to the elevator.

“Cole!!!”

Raine shouted but the elevator already closed

“What the hell is wrong with him” Raine muttered bending down to pick up the nylon the food was in.

Raine didn't hear anyone coming until a shoe stopped directly in front of him, he looked up immediately his mouth opened seeing who it was.

“Da….Daniel”

Raine stood up quietly looking away from him”

“Hey baby” Daniel said trying to pull him closer.

Raine jerked his hand free still not looking at Daniel.

“Yes, do you need something?”

“You won't even allow me to come in…”

Daniel said his voice in a whisper.

“You forgot it's your house, you could come in anytime”

Raine smiled his face empty of any other emotion.

He didn't wait for Daniel to speak before he turn back in leaving the door wide open.

Daniel came in closing the door behind him, Raine was already on the couch.

Curled up with the tv on.

Daniel already expected the cold shoulder but it hurt when faced with it directly.

He had missed Raine for the past two weeks he didn't visit.

The house sat at the edge of a quieter district, far enough from the capital’s heavier traffic that the afternoon sounded mostly of wind in the hedges and the occasional distant dog. It was not a grand place. The walls were solid, the rooms a little worn, and the kitchen always smelled of whatever had been cooked last. Nathan’s grandparents had raised him there for as long as he could properly remember. His parents came and went in short visits that felt more like interruptions than part of the real schedule of the house. Nathan had learned not to wait by the window for cars that might not stop. He was ten the afternoon the second child arrived. His grandmother had been restless all morning, moving between the front room and the kitchen with a tightness around her mouth that usually meant adult business was about to land in the house. His grandfather sat at the small table with the newspaper open and not being read. Nathan had been told only that his parents were bringing someone. H

The residence wing settled into evening the way it always did when the larger noise of the day had finally gone home. Somewhere down the corridor a member of staff finished the last of the clearing from the afternoon visit and went off shift. The garden lights came on in their usual soft sequence beyond the windows. In the family rooms, the evidence of cousins and chaos had been mostly restored to order, drawings stacked, shoes paired, the sticky fruit plate washed and put away. What remained was the smaller household: Daniel, Raine, and the three children who still, after all these years, treated bedtime as a negotiation rather than a fact. Raine stood at the dresser folding a shirt that did not strictly need folding, mostly for the quiet of the task. Behind him Daniel moved through the familiar routine of checking the outer latch and setting his tablet face down on the side table, the official day closed whether the kingdom agreed or not. Twelve years of nights like this had worn

Twelve years changed the shape of the palace without erasing what it had been. The corridors that had once carried lockdown orders and the echo of a queen being taken from a ballroom floor now carried different noise, smaller footsteps, arguments about stolen pastry, the distant shriek of a child who had discovered running was faster than walking and intended to prove it on every polished surface available. The kingdom had settled into a long stretch of steady rule. The scandals of that year had hardened into history, then into the kind of history people referenced with a shake of the head and a comment about how far things had come. Daniel still wore the crown. He wore it with less ice in his posture than he once had, though anyone who mistook the change for softness in matters of state learned otherwise quickly enough. Raine found him in the east family sitting room just after breakfast, one knee down while he attempted to fasten a very small shoe onto a very uncooperative foot. T

The message from Nathan’s office arrived just after dawn, formal even through the informal channel he had been using with Raine all week. There were matters in his own country that had been postponed past the point of safety, board structures, a regulatory hearing, two contracts that would not survive another stretch of his absence without inviting the kind of attention neither of them wanted. He had delayed as long as the situation allowed. He could not delay further. Raine read the message twice at the breakfast table before setting the phone down. Daniel watched him over the rim of his cup. “When.” “This afternoon,” Raine said. “Private jet. He already moved the departure up once to stay for the village. He cannot move it again.” Daniel nodded once. He did not offer empty reassurance about short trips and easy returns. He simply reached across the table and put his hand over Raine’s, solid and present, while the morning light moved across the residual peace of a household that

Two days after the village, Nathan canceled three meetings without offering the kind of explanation his office usually required. Kade found out about the date the way he still found out about most things that were not security protocols, after the decision had already been made. He came out of the suite bathroom in the late afternoon to find Nathan standing by the window with his phone in one hand and a look of focused satisfaction that usually meant someone, somewhere, had just lost an argument they did not know they were having. “We are going out,” Nathan said. Kade paused with the towel still in his hands. “Out where.” “On a date.” Nathan pocketed the phone and turned fully toward him. “Not a dinner with my brother. Not a palace corridor. Not a hotel suite with the door locked from the inside. A date. You will wear something that is not a duty suit. I will handle the rest.” Kade stared at him for a long second. The word sat in the room with more weight than its size suggested.

The capital had already moved into evening by the time the convoy cleared the outer districts and the palace lights appeared in the distance. The village still clung to them in small ways, dust on the lower edges of trousers, the wrapped parcel of flatbread Raine had insisted Nathan take, the quieter expression Nathan had worn since the old woman closed her hands around his and thanked him for keeping her boy. When the vehicles finally separated at the junction, Daniel and Raine turning toward the palace residence and Nathan’s car continuing on toward the hotel, the silence inside the second car felt different from ordinary end of day quiet. Kade drove. He always drove when the detail was reduced to the two of them. Nathan sat in the back for the first stretch, then moved up into the passenger seat without explanation once the denser traffic closed around them. He did not speak. His hand rested on his knee, then, after a stretch of unremarkable streets, settled on Kade’s thigh with a
