His grandfather bustled about making calls, putting on a friendly voice for whoever answered, but when he got an answer he didn't want, his expression turned sour. His father stood by the window, calling one person and then the next. His mother, though, was the most dramatic of them all, as she did nothing but cry. His eyes gleamed with mockery as he watched them. Unbelievable that they should be so worried about his older brother, Jesse, who, as they all feared, had been kidnapped, but was found to have run away with some guy. But Evan wasn't about to tell them that; they would never believe him. They always favored Jesse and treated him like he was fragile and sweet, because as a child he had been sickly. In reality, Jesse's frailty was his own fault, since he avoided any type of exercise whatsoever. As Evan grew older, he realized that the reason Jesse resented him was simply because he existed, not for anything he had done. Jesse had despised the idea of sharing the love and attention of the family and would often feign illnesses. When Evan was much younger, he yearned for the approval of his family and tried very hard to gain their affection. The disappointments had toughened him over time, and now he expected nothing from them. So long as they kept paying such basic needs as tuition, allowance, and a place to stay, he simply didn't care anymore. At least they'd never denied him that. Evan was a final-year student in the country's best university, studying medicine, but his parents never liked this decision as they wanted him to take up music like Jesse, the award-winning violinist who made many acknowledge the family for good things. Unlike Jesse, his talented brother, Evan was seen as the odd one out. “Evan, don't you know where your brother is?" his mother asked, her voice shaking. "You just sit there while all of us are worried to death!” A slight smirk curled Evan's lips. "Mom, I've told you a thousand times. I have no idea where your precious son is," he said coldly. Long ago, he stopped caring about their feelings, his heart held no love for his family, just indifference. And the only person he ever cared for was someone he couldn't have: Nathan Collins who just happened to be Jesse's boyfriend. Funny, huh? Evan was in love with his brother's boyfriend. Sometimes he thought he was just so cursed that he was to live his life in Jesse's shadow. But he had learned to deal with it. After he graduated and started working, he intended to cut ties with his family once and for all. That was why he'd been saving all his money to open his private clinic and finally be free. His mother let out a heavy sigh. "Why are you being so cold? I was just asking because you two are brothers, and he might have told you something." Evan snorted. "Brothers? We are more like strangers," he said while getting up to leave. "If you don't believe me, fine. I'm going to class." "Where are you going? How can you be so uncaring while your brother might have been kidnapped?" his grandfather's stern voice rang out. His fists were clenched hard to keep himself cool, he whirled around, placed a forced smile on his face, and said, "Kidnapped? Let's not kid ourselves, Grandpa. I'm going off to class. You can keep looking for Jesse," before walking just out, ignoring the shouting behind his back. Even as he stepped outside, his grandfather's angry voice still echoed, "Look at the kind of son you've raised! It's no wonder, being brought up by an uneducated nanny!" The words didn't bother Evan. True enough, he had been brought up by a nanny, but she was the only one who ever looked after him. She taught him how to walk, how to speak, and even how to use cutleries. She had retired years ago, but Evan would still visit her during holidays. She was childless and thus he treated her like his grandmother. He wanted to succeed so that he could change her old house and give her a good life. As Evan waited at the bus stop, Nathan crept into his mind. For years now, he had secretly been in love with him. Nathan was a hugely successful businessman, the CEO of a major medical company, and one of the most eligible bachelors around at 27 years old. Evans had first met him when he was just a kid. On a camping trip, Evans had saved the teenage Nathan from drowning. When he came back with help, Nathan was already gone. For years, Evan had thought about that boy and held onto the memory. Imagine the heartbreak Evans had felt years later when Nathan showed up at his house and was introduced as Jesse's boyfriend. All the pain had remained inside him all these years, a reminder that he would never have been able to be with the one person he wanted. Today, for some reason, Evan felt this urge to see Nathan. He called up a cab to take him to his apartment and enquired about whether the latter was fine. After an hour, he reached Nathan's place. It wasn't his first time; they became good friends as Nathan saw Evan as his younger brother. They did share interests in medicine, as Nathan's company dealt with pharmaceuticals and herbal products. He punched in the access code for the apartment-Jesse's birthday, a painful reminder of his unrequited love, entered the place, and was greeted by darkness. He flicked the lights on and was taken aback by what he saw: bottles of liquor and clothes lay strewn all over the floor. Nathan would never have allowed his place to get so messy. “Where is he?" Evan mumbled to himself as his chest started to tighten with concern. He started searching the rooms until, finally, a loud crash came from the bar area. Evan quickly went over to him and found Nathan slumped on the floor, surrounded by broken glass, his hand bleeding from a fresh cut. Evan's heart skipped a beat. "Nathan, what are you doing?" he yelled, hurrying to his side.A few days had passed and a lot had happened in these few days. Evans recovered and is now preparing to go back to college as he had missed a lot of classes, and not to forget, Jesse waking up from his coma which surprised everyone as even the doctors had pronounced that he had slipped into a coma but he surprisingly woke up after so many days. The days have been peaceful so far. Evans hasn't been disturbed by the Hart family or Nathan. He knew about his granny stopping Nathan from coming in anytime he came to visit but Evans hadn't once come out to see him or stopped his granny. Maybe he was just tired as he had said, or he really wanted to end his one-sided love, but one thing that surprised Evans was that Nathan hadn't been coming for three days, which is unusual, but it also made Evans sigh in relief. On this day, Evans dressed up casually with his backpack in his hand, and he smiled at Granny who was brushing around picking nothing or anything. He knew the incident that happen
In the room that smelled like antiseptic, Evans sat on the bed weakly, his back resting on the pillows that had been arranged for him, and next to him was Megan who gently focused on the apple she was peeling. “You still haven't told me how you landed here,” Megan asked after she gave Evans a small piece of apple. “You’ve started keeping secrets. I thought we were best friends, but it seems…” She sighed, then pursed her lips and bowed her head sadly. Evans furrowed his brows in worry. After a while, he pinched the middle of his brows in helplessness, “Stop pretending.” He calmly said, then threw her a glance after seeing her face light up. Though he knew she was pretending, he also knew that if he didn't say a word, Megan wouldn't stop disturbing him. “I donated blood to someone who desperately needed it.” He said breezily if this hadn't almost killed him. Megan wasn't surprised, she looked up and her eyes pierced through him. She didn't say a word or have any reaction, her gaze
Nathan walked out of the hospital and got into his car with so much rage oozing out of his body. His aura was cold and anyone who passed next to him wouldn’t help but shiver unconsciously. He entered the driver’s seat then slammed the door closed. “Bang!” The sound of his hand hitting the wheels sounded out loud, then he closed his eyes and clenched his fist on the wheels. His mind twirled with so much thought and emotion, and when he opened his eyes, he immediately opened the car door and rushed out of it again, then ran back inside the hospital desperately. “You little heartless person!” he cursed in mutters, then walked towards Evan’s door and stopped again. As Nathan stood in front of the closed door, he swallowed hard, clenched his fist tightly and stared at the door with his bloodshot eyes. Suddenly, he sighed, “What should I do about you…?” He muttered, his voice low but it showed his helplessness and frustration, then he rested his back on the wall and stood outside
“What will you do?” Nathan was stunned, he suddenly chuckled but as he looked at Evans serious face, the curl of his lips lowered, and the look on his face turned serious. “What do you mean?” He asked in his cold voice. Evans looked at the face he had always thought of, the person he placed in his heart and someone he could never stop loving. When he said Nathan was his obsession, he had told the truth. The love he had for him had been carved deep into his bones and can never be stopped, but— Evans lowered his head, then a chuckle rang out from his mouth. Bitterness, pain and anguish were all Nathan could hear from that chuckle and it's brought him so many bad feelings. Nathan didn't know when he raised his hand to touch the face, and when he thought Evans would reject him, he had actually let him do as he wanted. He cleaned the tears that gushed out of Evan’s face, cradled his face in between his palms, before raising it up but what he saw made his heart tremble. Natha
A few days passed slowly but also swiftly. Evans who had woken up the day before could be seen sitting weakly on the bed with Grandma feeding him porridge, and on the other side of the room was the ignored Nathan who has a dark expression. As Nathan watched the Grandma and grandson talk to each other like there was no other person in the room, he felt bitter. His face was cloudy and his eyes contained grievance, even Evans who hadn't wanted to pay attention to him felt speechless. This guy clearly felt indignant that he was being ignored by them since he woke up but wouldn't leave the room. Granny, who noticed that Evans had stopped talking guessed that it was all because of the stubborn man behind them and felt more annoyed with Nathan. Suddenly, she slammed the bowl on the table, jolting both men from their deep thoughts. She turned around and glared at Nathan who had a confused look on his face. “When is the great Young Master Nathan leaving? You should have work to do, righ
“Boss! We found the ring you asked us to search for!” Nathan's cold eyes narrowed when he heard the news. The incident that had happened made him forget the mission he had tasked them with. He looked at Evans who was still sleeping, then stood up and walked out of the room. He didn't want his call to disturb Evans' sleep as he wanted him to wake up naturally. He looked at the sky from the balcony, then put his hand in his pocket before he spat out coldly, “Explain.” Asst. Caleb's breath paused, he was hesitant to say what he found out but when he thought about how his boss had been deceived, he gritted his teeth hard. “Boss, the ring will be auctioned at the Glammery Auction which will come up next week!” Nathan breathed paused, his eyes contained a sneer and he waited for his assistant to continue. Assistant Caleb then continued after a snort, “We found out that the ring was not lost but was sold to the Largest jewellery store in country Zarc, the same country young master
