His grandfather bustled about making calls, putting on a friendly voice for whoever answered, but when he got an answer he didn't want, his expression turned sour. His father stood by the window, calling one person and then the next. His mother, though, was the most dramatic of them all, as she did nothing but cry. His eyes gleamed with mockery as he watched them. Unbelievable that they should be so worried about his older brother, Jesse, who, as they all feared, had been kidnapped, but was found to have run away with some guy. But Evan wasn't about to tell them that; they would never believe him. They always favored Jesse and treated him like he was fragile and sweet, because as a child he had been sickly. In reality, Jesse's frailty was his own fault, since he avoided any type of exercise whatsoever. As Evan grew older, he realized that the reason Jesse resented him was simply because he existed, not for anything he had done. Jesse had despised the idea of sharing the love and attention of the family and would often feign illnesses. When Evan was much younger, he yearned for the approval of his family and tried very hard to gain their affection. The disappointments had toughened him over time, and now he expected nothing from them. So long as they kept paying such basic needs as tuition, allowance, and a place to stay, he simply didn't care anymore. At least they'd never denied him that. Evan was a final-year student in the country's best university, studying medicine, but his parents never liked this decision as they wanted him to take up music like Jesse, the award-winning violinist who made many acknowledge the family for good things. Unlike Jesse, his talented brother, Evan was seen as the odd one out. “Evan, don't you know where your brother is?" his mother asked, her voice shaking. "You just sit there while all of us are worried to death!” A slight smirk curled Evan's lips. "Mom, I've told you a thousand times. I have no idea where your precious son is," he said coldly. Long ago, he stopped caring about their feelings, his heart held no love for his family, just indifference. And the only person he ever cared for was someone he couldn't have: Nathan Collins who just happened to be Jesse's boyfriend. Funny, huh? Evan was in love with his brother's boyfriend. Sometimes he thought he was just so cursed that he was to live his life in Jesse's shadow. But he had learned to deal with it. After he graduated and started working, he intended to cut ties with his family once and for all. That was why he'd been saving all his money to open his private clinic and finally be free. His mother let out a heavy sigh. "Why are you being so cold? I was just asking because you two are brothers, and he might have told you something." Evan snorted. "Brothers? We are more like strangers," he said while getting up to leave. "If you don't believe me, fine. I'm going to class." "Where are you going? How can you be so uncaring while your brother might have been kidnapped?" his grandfather's stern voice rang out. His fists were clenched hard to keep himself cool, he whirled around, placed a forced smile on his face, and said, "Kidnapped? Let's not kid ourselves, Grandpa. I'm going off to class. You can keep looking for Jesse," before walking just out, ignoring the shouting behind his back. Even as he stepped outside, his grandfather's angry voice still echoed, "Look at the kind of son you've raised! It's no wonder, being brought up by an uneducated nanny!" The words didn't bother Evan. True enough, he had been brought up by a nanny, but she was the only one who ever looked after him. She taught him how to walk, how to speak, and even how to use cutleries. She had retired years ago, but Evan would still visit her during holidays. She was childless and thus he treated her like his grandmother. He wanted to succeed so that he could change her old house and give her a good life. As Evan waited at the bus stop, Nathan crept into his mind. For years now, he had secretly been in love with him. Nathan was a hugely successful businessman, the CEO of a major medical company, and one of the most eligible bachelors around at 27 years old. Evans had first met him when he was just a kid. On a camping trip, Evans had saved the teenage Nathan from drowning. When he came back with help, Nathan was already gone. For years, Evan had thought about that boy and held onto the memory. Imagine the heartbreak Evans had felt years later when Nathan showed up at his house and was introduced as Jesse's boyfriend. All the pain had remained inside him all these years, a reminder that he would never have been able to be with the one person he wanted. Today, for some reason, Evan felt this urge to see Nathan. He called up a cab to take him to his apartment and enquired about whether the latter was fine. After an hour, he reached Nathan's place. It wasn't his first time; they became good friends as Nathan saw Evan as his younger brother. They did share interests in medicine, as Nathan's company dealt with pharmaceuticals and herbal products. He punched in the access code for the apartment-Jesse's birthday, a painful reminder of his unrequited love, entered the place, and was greeted by darkness. He flicked the lights on and was taken aback by what he saw: bottles of liquor and clothes lay strewn all over the floor. Nathan would never have allowed his place to get so messy. “Where is he?" Evan mumbled to himself as his chest started to tighten with concern. He started searching the rooms until, finally, a loud crash came from the bar area. Evan quickly went over to him and found Nathan slumped on the floor, surrounded by broken glass, his hand bleeding from a fresh cut. Evan's heart skipped a beat. "Nathan, what are you doing?" he yelled, hurrying to his side.Everyone froze and stared at Evans in disbelief.“What do you mean?” Madam Hart asked in disbelief. Evans threw a glance at his mother, then repeated, “Give me a good reason why I should help him?” “He’s your brother, you heartless child!” Evans paused, clicked his tongue, then rolled his eyes, “You said this when I was just 14 years old. If I remember correctly, you manipulated the young me into donating blood after blood to him, not caring if my little body could take it, not caring that it would cause complications. All you all cared about was Jesse and guess what—?!” He said, then looked at each of them in their faces then spat, “He never once thanked me, but he instead bossed me around while I was weak and accused me of hating him because of his illness if I didn't agree to do his wishes!” He glared at them with cold eyes, “So why should I risk my health for someone who doesn't even care about me?!” He questioned.“Jesse is not like that! How dare you lie about your elder bro
Evans was pulled into the car and before he could say anything else, Nathan had jumped into the driver's seat and then stepped on the gas. Evans’ eyes widened at the speed the car was running, he held onto the door handle in fear then turned to glare at Nathan in anger and anxiousness, “Are you crazy, Nathan?! What the hell is wrong with you?! Stop speeding! I don't feel okay!!” He cried out anxiously, his body trembling from fear but it was as if Nathan couldn't hear him as he didn't even look at Evans or respond to him.“Hey! Where the hell are you taking me to?!” Evans frowned, clearly angry and tensed, but seeing Nathan not respond to any of his questions, he decided to calm his heart and save his energy for what was about to come even if he didn't know what was going on.Immediately the car stopped in front of the hospital few minutes later, Evans staggered out and ran to the bin at the side, he bent with his hand pressed on his tummy as he began to vomit out acids since he had
Nathan’s mind froze when he heard the name, his lips parted to say something but Father Hart had already picked up his phone to call Evans.“Evans, where are you?!” He asked in a strict voice. Nathan frowned but said nothing. He watched quietly as Father Hart suddenly widened his eyes in disbelief, brought down his phone and kept on looking at it dumbfounded.“What's wrong? Why didn't you tell him his older brother needs him at the moment?!” Madam Hart asked in panic.Father Hart looked at his wife, gritted his teeth and clenched his phone angrily, “Look at the bastard you gave birth to?! How dare he hang up the call without even listening to me?! How dare that little boy?!” He yelled so angrily.“What?!” Mother Hart cried out in surprise, “Then call him back!” she said.Father hart listened to his wife and called Evans again but all he got was the sound of calls being rejected. The surrounding air froze. They all looked at each other, then Grandpa who had been watching them for a wh
Nathan rushed out of the bar crazily and jumped into his car, his movements were swift and hurried like he was about to lose his world.Immediately he got into his car, he waited no more and stepped on the gas and in no time, he was out on the road. His heart pounded fast as he hoped nothing had gone wrong. Nathan didn't know how he got to the hospital, he didn't know how many lights he ran past, but immediately he stopped the car in front of the hospital, he ran out of it and rushed into the hospital. After asking around, he was told where Jesse had been taken to and without any waste of time, he rushed there but what he saw were Jesse’s family who all looked like they had lost a skin. In large steps, he walked to them and they all turned to him. “What's going on here?!” His voice which didn't hide his worries sounded, shocking to Madam Hart who had been crying heartbrokenly.Father Hart sighed then turned to Nathan. “We also don't know what is going on.” He said, then pointed at
Jesse looked at the man choking his neck in both fear and confusion. He couldn't understand how things had become this way. He still felt confused how Nathan had known about his relationship with Liam, he didn't understand how things had become this way when it was going just fine before. Looking at Nathan who had a fierce expression, Something tells him that one more word from him might get him killed. “You want to deny your relationship with him? Is that what you wanted to say? Have I been so careful with you that you think I'm too dumb?!” Nathan yelled then tightened his fist around his neck. He hadn't wanted to believe it before, but the words of Evans drilled a hole in his heart and pushed him to ask Jesse this question. Do you know he wished that it wasn't true? Did you know how much he had hoped that Jesse would show him all his accusations were wrong? But… That first guilty and stunned expression had told him everything he needed to know. Nathan had been fooled. “Na..N
“Nathan, who owns this?!” Nathan followed the hand of Jesse and saw a nipple clip in his hand. He paused for a second and his eyes shook, his lips pursed as he shifted his gaze back to Jesse who was now coming down from the stairs. “I asked a question, Nath.” he asked again, this time more calmly but his puffy eyes shone with so much anger. “What do you mean?” Nathan asked, his voice steady, but the hand in his pocket had clenched tightly. He hadn’t expected Jesse to come over when he wasn’t around and even enter his room. He had forgotten how he had given Jesse access to his house and room. That nipple clip had been what he had used on Evans, and he had vented his frustration by throwing it into the bin, and also, it was not only the nipple clip but also the—“What do I mean?! Then what about this Lubricant?!” Jesse roared and pointed to the lubricant he had hidden behind him.Shit! Fire burned through Jesse’s eyes as he glared at Nathan who looked at the things in Jesse’s hand
