Chapter 2

作者: Echo
Martha was furious, her face dark with anger, but she still wouldn't give in.

Damien turned his fury back on me, his golden eyes filled with madness.

"Elara, is that what you think, too? You think Isla is a fraud?"

I shook my head, acting terrified. "Of course not! I just—"

"Just what?" his voice was a low growl. "You're just jealous of Isla. Jealous of what we have. You want her dead, don't you?"

He was testing me. Testing to see if I remembered my past life.

I shook my head innocently, as if his words had broken my heart. "Damien, what are you talking about? Why would I want Isla dead? I don't understand."

I played the part of a clueless, innocent victim.

"I'm not jealous of anyone," I whispered, my voice trembling. "I'm just worried about you—"

"Worried?" Damien sneered. "If you were really worried about me, you'd be taking me to Isla right now, not standing here questioning my judgment!"

Martha shot me a pleading look. I knew what she wanted: for me to use my Luna's influence to override his command, just long enough to force treatment on him. It’s what we did last time. I feigned a moment's hesitation, then cautiously moved closer.

But the reborn Damien was ready. Ignoring his own injury, he swiped at me, his wolf's claws flashing. Sharp talons raked across my arm, tearing open three bloody gashes.

"Ah—" I cried out as blood dripped from my arm to the floorboards. Damien had completely lost it. He’d never laid a hand on me like that in our past life. It seemed his madness was worse this time around. Good. The crazier he is, the harder he’ll fall.

"I'm sorry!" I choked back the pain, faking terror as tears streamed down my face. "I'll take you to Moonridge now! Please, just don't hurt me!"

Seeing that Damien was about to lunge at me again and that his wound was only getting worse, Martha had no choice. "Enough! Damien, we'll take you! Your leg can't wait any longer!"

Damien stared at me for a few seconds, making sure my eyes held nothing but fear. Then, he slowly relaxed.

"That's more like it," he said, slumping back onto the bed, completely unconcerned that his injury had worsened. "Let's go. Now."

Ten hours later, I was speeding down the highway in our SUV, heading for Moonridge.

Damien was lying in the back, his face as pale as a corpse. He’d lost so much blood his body temperature was dropping, but he still stubbornly refused to stop at any hospital along the way.

"How much longer?" he asked weakly.

"Another six hours," I said, glancing in the rearview mirror. "Are you sure you don't want to at least stop the bleeding?"

"Don't need to. Isla will handle it."

I fought the urge to roll my eyes. The man was beyond stupid.

Another long night passed. By the time the SUV finally entered the territory of the Moonridge Pack, the sun was rising. I'd been driving for twenty-four hours straight, and my eyes were bloodshot.

But Damien immediately perked up. "Quick, to Isla's clinic."

I followed the GPS to the small clinic. It was less a clinic and more a shabby little house. There wasn't even a proper sign out front.

"Isla!" Damien impatiently dialed her number. "I'm here. Come out and get me!"

Loud music and men's laughter blared from the other end of the line.

"Damien? What are you doing here?" Isla's voice was confused and slurred. "It's not a good time, I'm at a party—"

"A party?" Damien was stunned. "I'm seriously injured! I need you to heal me!"

"Oh, that," Isla said dismissively. "You'll have to wait. The party's not over yet. Marcus just poured me some champagne—Marcus, stop it, I'm on the phone—"

The line went dead.

I sat in the driver's seat, watching Damien's stunned expression. In that moment, a twisted sense of pleasure washed over me.

"Looks like your 'best healer' is busy with another man," I said, my voice dripping with false sympathy. "Maybe we should find a real hospital?"

Damien's face turned ugly, but his jaw was set. "She's just busy. We'll wait."

I fought back a smile. "Of course," I said softly. "We'll wait."

I swallowed the rest of my words:

"I can't wait to see what kind of a mess a 'healer' who couldn't even pass basic herbology will make of you."

Two months later, Silver Moon Pack.I was in my office handling pack business when my assistant knocked. "Elara, the final ruling from the Council is in.""Go on," I said without looking up from the documents I was signing."The mate bond is officially dissolved. Damien has been sentenced to life in the pack prison. Also, regarding Isla's case...""What about it?""She's dead. Found in her cell this morning. The official cause is suicide, but no one's buying it."I paused my pen, not surprised at all. In my last life, Isla had died the same way. Silenced by Derek, the one she worked for. Her usefulness had run out.It seems some things are destined to happen."I see," I said calmly. "Anything else?"Just then, my phone rang. The caller ID read: Damien.I answered. "What is it?""Elara..." His voice was strange, laced with a sick excitement. "I figured it out.""Figured what out?""Don't you see? The Moon Goddess gave us a do-over! A second chance! We die together, we're reborn together

"I can prove it!"One of the three assistants from the ritual finally stepped forward. The young Beta trembled as he spoke. "Isla was out of it during the whole ritual. She even used the completely wrong purification chant!""What?" Everyone stared in shock."She threatened us!" another assistant added, finding his courage. "Said if we breathed a word, she'd have us exiled. Said no one would believe a couple of Betas over the Alpha's new favorite...""Shut up!" Realizing she could no longer hide her guilt, Isla let out a shriek. "It was Damien's own stupid fault! He's the one who insisted I heal him. I didn't force him!"Damien's face was chalk white. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. "You came to me, crying your eyes out!" Damien shot back, his voice cracking. "You told me how everyone in Moonridge shunned you, how you couldn't get work. You begged me to give you a platform, to make them see you..."Isla let out a harsh laugh. "And you believed everything I said? If it wasn't f

"Everyone, look!" Isla held up the phone, her voice shaking with triumph. "This is our 'perfect' Luna! Pretending to care for her mate while she's out meeting with other Alphas!"The photo did show me standing very close to an unfamiliar man, in what looked like a hug."I knew it. No wonder she wanted Damien dead. She was looking for a new mate!""Disgusting! How can someone like her be a Luna?"The accusations flew from the Moonridge pack members. Martha was trembling with rage. "You whore! My son gave you everything, and you...""Enough!" I cut them off, my voice cold. "Do you want to know what that photo is really about?"Just then, the sound of a car engine grew closer. A black luxury sedan pulled up, and a tall, imposing middle-aged man stepped out.It was the man from the photo.Thorne—an Adjudicator for the Wolf Alliance, the final word in disputes among the great packs."Good afternoon," Thorne said, walking to my side and nodding at the crowd. "Sorry I'm late. Traffic was heav

"No... impossible... that's not right..."Damien's eyes went wide with disbelief. He shook his head, muttering under his breath, "It healed so fast last life... Why is it like this... why this time..."His voice was quiet, but I heard him clearly.I laughed silently to myself.Last time, he healed because I got the best healers in our pack for him, and I used my own power to shield his bloodline and protect his wolf from the corruption. But this time, Isla's pathetic healing skills only made things a hundred times worse. He clearly had no idea how serious his injury truly was."Last life? Damien, what are you babbling about?" Martha shook his shoulders, her voice frantic.Damien snapped back to reality, his eyes darting around. "I... I just can't accept it... I can't be a cripple!""Alpha, we must operate now," Thomas said sternly. "Every minute we delay, the dark corruption spreads further.""No!" Damien struggled to sit up. "There has to be another way! Isla, say something! You must

"No! No! This is impossible!"Isla and her two assistants scrambled out of the ritual circle, their clothes spattered with blood, her perfect makeup a ruined mess.Martha was the first to grab Isla's arm. "What happened in there? How is Damien?""I… I don't know!" Isla shook her head in terror. "The ritual was going perfectly, and then suddenly—""Get out of the way!"Elder Thomas pushed through the crowd and rushed into the circle. A few moments later, he emerged, his face ashen."Prepare purification crystals and sealing runes! Now!" Thomas yelled at his assistants. "And get every senior healer here! Immediately!"My heart hammered in my chest—not with fear, but with a dark, thrilling anticipation."Elder, what happened?" Martha asked, her voice tight with anxiety.Thomas looked at us gravely. "A dark corruption has set into the Alpha's legs. It's spreading to his wolf's bloodline. If we can't contain it…"He didn’t have to finish the sentence. We all knew what it meant. All eyes tur

  • His Ruin, My Light   Chapter 3

Three hours later, a flashy pink sports car finally pulled up to the clinic. The door opened, and Isla stepped out on sky-high heels. She was poured into a tight, deep-V red dress so short it barely covered her thighs, and she was practically spilling out of it.Worse, she reeked of male pheromones—and not from just one man."Oh my goddess, Damien!" Isla covered her mouth theatrically. "You're hurt so badly!"By now, Damien was semi-conscious from blood loss. He barely managed to open his eyes, his gaze still full of blind devotion. "Isla… you're here…"I stood to the side, watching the melodrama. Martha's face was as black as thunder."This is your 'best healer'?" Martha demanded, gesturing at Isla's outfit. "Is she dressed for a nightclub or to save a life?"Isla frowned. "Martha, please don't judge someone's professional ability by their clothes. I just rushed over from a medical conference—""A medical conference?" The local head healer, Elder Thomas, scoffed. "Young lady, I just g
