Silas's POV

“Why did you make me fall in love with you when you knew you were going to leave me too soon?”

I stood under the rain, my suit soaked as I stood before the marble headstone that had become my hiding place since the past five years.

Today was my husband's fifth death anniversary.

Emery James Vaughn. Beloved husband. 1989–2019. Forever in my heart.

I knelt down on the tomb as memories kept crashing back and I remembered the night everything changed.

A call had come in when I was pacing our suite. I was so angry because Emery had once again missed our anniversary dinner.

I ignored his call…he called me over seven times that night but I didn't answer. Instead, I switched off my phone and told myself I was done forgiving him and excusing his absence.

I had begged for just one night but I never knew that night would be the end of everything.

When I eventually switched on my phone, blaming myself for overreacting, I received another call that still rings in my ear till this day.

“Please is this Silas Vaughn?...Sir…we found your husband's vehicle on the highway. The car caught fire. We need someone to identify the body”

I'd driven to the morgue like a mad man. My hands were shaking so badly as I gripped the steering wheel…praying that whoever was in that vehicle shouldn't be my husband.

I finally got to the morgue and when they pulled back the white sheet, I barely recognised what was left of the man I loved.

His body was butchered….his face bloodied beyond recognition…that night I screamed so loud that I had to be sedated…when I woke up, I never remained the same.

For five years I lived in guilt. Sometimes I woke up in the middle of the night reaching out for Emery only to find cold sheets..

The police said someone did this but they never found who. So I took it upon myself to do the job. I hired private investigators…went through different police files, yet found nothing.

“I promise you Em…” I said pressing my palm against the marble.. “I'm going to find whoever did this to you…I'm going to make them pay…I'll make them pay for taking you away from me”

The words got stuck in my throat, I couldn't even breathe. “But…I need to try and live again. I need to learn how to live without you because…I know you're never coming back…I'm sorry I didn't pick your calls that night, and I hope you'll forgive me. I love you Em, you know I do…till we meet again”

I finally straightened up and put on my sunglasses to cover my blood shot eyes as I walked out of the cemetery.

Emery had left me everything pushing me from a small time hotelier to a billionaire magnate with over thirty seven luxury hotels across the country.

I expanded Vaughn hotels into a billion dollar corporation but even with all the wealth I now possessed, it couldn't fill the emptiness I felt inside.

My phone buzzed with a notification, I checked my email and saw the email marked urgent, I opened it and saw the invitation.

The metropolitan Children's foundation gala…Tonight, 8PM.

I was listed as a platinum sponsor, last month I had written them a check for one million dollars but I hadn't attended any social event since Emery's funeral.

“Goldie?” I called my assistant, my voice hoarse from crying.

“Mr Vaughn are you alright? You sound…”

“Clear my schedule for tonight and move them to next week”

She was silent for a few seconds before she answered. “Sir…are you sure? You have the Singapore merger meeting on Tuesday and…”

“I'm going to the gala tonight”

She didn't respond immediately, and I could practically hear her mind racing. “Mr Vaughn…please I don't think this is a good idea, the last time you attended a public event, you had a panic attack. How would you handle the press…the questions about Mr Emery and…”

“I'll be fine. I need to do this”

I ended the call before she could argue further.

When I got home, I went to my walk-in closet, a place I had avoided for far too long.

Most of Emery's suits were in here.

I opened it and my hands found the blue Tom Ford suit still in its garment bag. It was the suit I was supposed to wear to our wedding anniversary five years ago.

I put it on. When I looked in the mirror, I looked like a man who had his life put together but I was so broken that I didn't think anyone would be able to fix me.

By the time I arrived at the gala and stepped out of my car, paparazzi swamped the entrance, their cameras clicking furiously as soon as they caught sight of me.

“Silas Vaughn over here!”

How does it feel to be back?”

“Any comments on the merger rumours?”

“Are you dating anyone again?”

Security escorted me inside and inside, it was even worse. At some point, I was beginning to think it was a bad idea.

I managed to tune out the bad comments…and took my seat at the sponsors table accepting condolences from people I didn't even know…while trying to remember how to smile.

The MC’s voice boomed over the microphone welcoming guests, thanking patrons and urging generosity for the evening's cause.

I tried to focus while sipping the champagne in front of me telling myself I was making progress when a movement near the buffet area caught my eye.

A young man had slipped inside unnoticed by the security who were distracted with the tips they were receiving.

His clothes were rumpled…his hair looked unkempt but there was something about the way he was acting that reminded me of…

He turned to check if anyone was watching before he stuffed food in his mouth.

My champagne glass slipped from my fingers and shattered on the floor.

This was impossible…it was insane.

But I was staring at my dead husband's face.

Ken’s povI gave a quick nod. “Sure. I won’t. But here’s what I’m going to do. You are going to erase every evidence you have against me. And if you threaten me again, I won’t be the one doing the shooting. But I’ll hire people to shoot you.”“Is that so?” He got closer to the table, leaning forward and smiling at me. “Fine. I’ll erase it. But did you think that your plan of not shooting me would go a long way? Let’s be honest. By the time I walk out of the door, I could blow up your car when you’re going home.”I shuddered at hearing that from him.“And you don’t even know if maybe I have a backup drive at home that the moment I die, it will be sent to the press.”He could be bluffing. But I wasn’t going to fall for that.“I don’t believe you,” I said to him.He smiled. “Don’t believe me then. But in case you hear conversations on the web, know that you brought this on yourself.”Almost immediately, I started to lower my gun as he smiled.“That’s a good boy. But because you’ve held y

Ken’s povI watched the court case over and over on my phone while waving my glass of whiskey in my hand. I then paused it and stopped looking at the phone and looked at the liquid in the glass before hearing clamoring in the hallway. I could hear my assistant running after somebody and yelling that the person shouldn’t be here, and I knew it was my spy and assassin.Taking my gun, I latched it under the table and behaved like nothing was wrong. The door burst open with the man coming in as well as my assistant.“You can leave him, Sarah. Walk back out.”“But sir…”“Sarah, leave. Now.”She looked at both of us and nodded before going out, closing the door behind her as I looked at him.“What seems to be the problem pretty boy,” he chuckled, like I wasn’t vexed already.“You know what, Damon, I’ve had a very long day. A very, very terrible day, if I’m being honest. And it’s all because of you. You couldn’t make Emery’s death more of an accident. Instead, you had to make it so goddamn r

Ken’s povI got into my car and waved to my driver to take us out of this estate. He nodded and ignited the car as he started to drive away.“Where to, sir?” he asked, but my mind was on the court case. What the fuck had happened in there? How was that guy the one trying to destroy my life now?I looked at my phone… it was still buzzing. More than five hundred messages and two hundred missed calls. I didn’t even know what to say or what to do anymore. All I could think of was how to rip Julian’s throat out of his neck. How to detach his hands in the most painful way. How to make him regret every single word he had said in the courtroom. But there was nothing in my head that could amount to the amount of pain I wanted to inflict on him. He was just there. He didn’t understand what it felt like to actually be on top. I had done what I had done for me. That bastard had no right to show up and think he could blackmail me.I was going to teach him a lesson… but first, I had to teach someon

Silas’s povI didn’t even know how I had left the courtroom but I could remember getting into my car and closing the door. Why? I asked myself multiple times. What the hell is going on?“Mr. Silas,” someone called as I could only hear muffled sounds.“Mr. Silas.”I looked up to see my driver had opened the door for me.“We’re home.”I stared at him for a couple of minutes before nodding and getting out.“Should I get something for you?”“I… I just need some time alone.”I walked in. I had come home without Nathan or my lawyer. What the hell was happening? I should have known that he was going to pull out some stunt. It was a classic Julian move. He was always doing this.I got to the whiskey cabinet and poured myself a good glass of whiskey which I downed and slammed down with anger.I thought about what I had heard today and seen… Julian pointing at Ken, Ken laughing and acting surprised. Was his surprise even real? Was it truly real? Was Ken the one who had killed Emery? It wasn’t g

Julian’s pov“Are you out of your damn mind?!” my lawyer yelled as he shook his head. “I can’t believe I’m defending you. What the fuck did you think you were gonna accomplish here? I’m so stupid for taking on this case to defend you.”“You wanted me to lie?”“No, I wanted you to tell the truth! All these things you’re bringing up here, I told you no goddamn surprises!” he yelled, banging his hand on the table before me.“As I said, I’m sorry. All right? I didn’t know if I could trust you.”“Oh, right now, do you think you can trust me? Because right now, I’m thinking of dropping this goddamn case. I can’t handle this case anymore. You are going against someone who is far more powerful than Silas. He’s a presidential aspirant. He doesn’t go out there putting out his private life. He stays on his own. Ken is one of the most powerful politicians out there. He goes about his business, handles his company, and doesn’t look for anyone’s trouble. And yet, somehow, he’s the same person that

Julian’s povI thought back on that night that it had happened and thought back on the day I had read the news and gulped. My eyes fell on where Silas was sitting. His eyes were almost bulging out of his head. The courtroom was broken into two, some arguing, some muttering, and some outrightly judging me while some congratulating me. And it didn’t take long before the judge slammed his gavel down.“Order! Order!” he yelled, as the noise took some time before it died down. The judge then turned to me. “What is this, Mr. Julian, trying to cause mayhem in my courtroom?”I shook my head. “No, Your Honor, I’m just trying to tell the truth of what happened.”“And can anybody corroborate your story?” he went further to ask.I shook my head. “Unfortunately, no. But I’m just giving the way everything happened. You can ask me what happened on this day and what happened on that day and I’ll tell you where I’ve been. But never in my life have I committed any murder or done anything destructive. A
