INICIAR SESIÓNChapter Seven
Zander I'm irritated. She looked at the contract for what felt like the tenth time, refusing to touch it for some reason. Still she hadn't signed. I was giving her all she needed and she was throwing it in my face? She was beginning to get on my nerves. Her voice brought me out of my annoyance. “Mr Stone…,” she started. “Call me Zander,” I cut her off without remorse. She continued without agreeing to my correction. This woman. She asked to review her contract with her legal counsel. I refused immediately. This was a lifeline I was offering. Time is of the essence!! She refused to sign and stood up, walking out of my office without sparing me a second glance. The silence in my office after she walked out was louder than the little disagreement we had. For a moment, I simply stared at the closed door, half expecting her to walk back in and apologize. She didn’t. I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding, and leaned back in my chair. She had refused. After everything. After the negotiations, the pressure, the carefully drafted terms, and the undeniable reality staring her in the face, she had looked at the contract, met my eyes, and walked away. She left, despite knowing what was at stake. Knowing what she stood to lose, in just a few hours. No signature. No agreement. Nothing. I was angry that all my plans were going to waste. But slowly, it gave way to something dangerously close to admiration. Most people folded under pressure. They caved when they realized how little room they had to make a change. But not Ivy. She was stubborn enough to stand in front of a burning building and insist the flames move around her. I glanced at the unsigned documents spread across my desk. I’d been certain she would sign but she didn't. Anyone in her position would have. There was too much at stake, and too little time to entertain wounded pride. Yet she’d chosen pride anyway. Or maybe it wasn’t pride. Maybe it was fear of the uncertain, or maybe she didn't care as much as I thought. No. I banished that thought. The woman that sat in front of me wanted to save her family's legacy. I wondered what made her choose to leave when she obviously didn't have any other options. Was it pride? Or fear? The distinction didn’t matter. What mattered was that she still needed this deal. And whether she liked it or not, she would come back. I was certain of it. They had come too far to turn around now. The situation surrounding her family was deteriorating by the day, and every hour wasted narrowed her options. There was no time to waste and she was treading on dangerous territory. Soon, this contract would be the only thing standing between them and complete ruin. She knew that. And I knew it better than anyone. I rose from my chair and walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. The skyline glittered under the afternoon sun, sharp and untouchable. Power was a curious thing. People assumed it came from money, influence, or status. But true power came from patience. From knowing exactly when to wait and when to strike. Ivy was in her emotions right now. Confused maybe. She needed time to cool down. And once she did, she would think logically. Her phone would beep with bad news from her company. She would read the numbers, check the odds, revisit the consequences, and understand what I had understood from the beginning. There was no alternative. I was her only option. And the sooner she took it, the better. I returned to my desk and opened my laptop. The cursor blinked against a blank email. I typed her name into the recipient line and began to write. Ivy, I understand today’s meeting did not go as expected. There are certain aspects of the contract we can discuss further, if you're open to discussion. If you are willing, I would like to meet privately to address your concerns and clarify any terms you find unacceptable. Time is of the essence. Let me know when and where you would prefer to meet. — Zander I read the message once, then hit send. Simple. And direct. A concession, but only a small one. I wasn’t rewriting the contract. I was giving her the illusion of control. Sometimes that was all a person needed to say yes. I needed her to feel like she was in control, even if it was just a little bit. My phone buzzed with a message from my attorney. “Any update?” He wanted to know the next course of action and if he'd be drafting marriage certificates or motions for marriage. I chuckled to myself at his eagerness to work. I typed back. “Nothing yet, " she walked out. She'll be back” I set the phone down and closed the contract folder. Ivy might hate me. She might question my intentions and wonder why I chose her. She might resent every word printed on those pages. She might investigate me but she won't find anything. Resentment was irrelevant. In the end, necessity always won. I trust that she'd do what she needed to do to save her father's company. And when she came back to me, she would sign. One way or another. I would make sure of it. Just as I was rounding up, I received her email stating the place and time. I smirked. I knew she'd respond. I looked up the place and I had to give it to her. She was up to impress. She was a proud one. Now all I needed her to do was to play into my trap. If only she knew what she was getting into. I rounded up things at the office and headed home for an early evening. Tomorrow was going to be more interesting.Chapter SevenZanderI'm irritated. She looked at the contract for what felt like the tenth time, refusing to touch it for some reason. Still she hadn't signed. IVY.I knew I had to make a decision. I had 72 hours to save my father's company. He gave me ten minutes.I couldn't make such a huge decision in ten minutes. I had little time, but I couldn't throw my life away just like that. I had to think this through and explore other options.“Mr Stone, I..”“Call me Zander.” He cut me off without any apology.I was irritated but decided to not let it show. He seemed to intentionally try to rile me up. I wouldn't let him see how affected I was.“I cannot sign this in ten minutes. I have to properly review this with my lawyer's counsel.” I continued, refusing to call him Zander.I knew I'd most likely not review the contract. There was no way I'd get married to this man.He seemed to think it through.“No.” He said and I raised my brow before I could stop myself.“The contract is not open to legal scrutiny.” He said like someone who had something to hide.“Well, I'm also not open to getting married under unclear terms.” I said as I stood up and m
IVY.“Marry me.” He said those words again.Like it was totally normal to propose marriage to a stranger. I still didn't understand what was going on.He went on and on about leaving on a clean slate after two years.“Why marriage?” “Why not another option?” “You could loan us the money.” I started rambling, trying to make sense of the whole situation. It seemed crazy that this was happening to me.This was something that only happened in books and movies. He looked at me with a calm, almost bored expression.“You won't ever recover with that amount of loan.” He stated like I was dumb not to know that.I still couldn't understand what was going on.His assistant walked into the conference room the same way he had walked in earlier. I think it came with working at Stone Holdings. She casually walked up to me and dropped a thick file in front of me.The heading was “MARRIAGE ARRANGEMENT” in bold letters. I felt like vomiting.I pushed the file away from me.“When you sign that, we'll
IVY.After I got home , I ate dinner alone. I knew it was pointless trying to get both my parents down. I just had to find a way to fix this. I did my night routine and then it was time for the emergency session I booked with Nia.We talked, well, she tried to get me to talk about what has been going on with me. I told her about the drugs I took the other day, and how I felt. She wasn't pleased. She gave me other tips that I already know. She knew this, but she chose to bore me. I also mentioned that I'd start using the private elevator. She immediately knew there was a reason, but there was no way I was going to indulge her. We spoke on my need to fix everything and she told me to calm down and let things play out. We spoke for a bit after and I genuinely felt better.I woke up with a weird feeling and I knew it had to do with the meeting I had planned today.I took a few minutes to think about what was going on.I got dressed and headed over to his office. I didn't bother heading t
ZANDER.I recognized her almost immediately, when the elevator doors opened. She looked slightly different from the pictures I saw from that night. It was almost unnoticeable, but I saw the way she hesitated before entering the elevator. She almost squeezed the life of the innocent stress ball she was holding. She looked like she just got off work. I didn't know she worked in this building.I had more digging to do to execute my plans. She didn't look up as she entered. She stayed at the corner of the elevator resting on it while I stayed near the door.I could feel her staring at the back of my head but I didn't move. She looked so innocent, fragile and strong at the same time. She didn't look like someone who destroyed lives and moved on.She didn't even realize how close I had been to her. That made this easier. My phone buzzed once in my pocket. I ignored it.There were more important things occupying my thoughts. Like the woman who had walked away from a wreck that took everythi
IVY.I spent the rest of the night trying to figure out what to do. I emailed companies that had shown interest in us in the past. I waited for their responses, but the few that I got already showed a dead end. I was about to shut down my laptop when I saw the email. It wasn't like the rest. I stared at my screen longer than necessary. I never contacted Stone Holdings which meant this wasn't a response. For some reason, they chose us.I was at the end of my wits and my anxiety was at an all-time high. Morning came too quickly and I still didn't know what to do. There was an emergency board meeting that might be our last, if a miracle didn't happen.I got dressed in a daze and I stopped by the kitchen to get an apple. I didn't have an appetite but I needed something to distract me. I saw my mum already baking so early, something that she only does when she's stressed.I greeted her then asked for my dad, she told me he already left.“How bad is it?” she asked as she studied my face.“
