Chapter 4

작가: Nameless
Austin immediately got up and walked out, throwing the cotton swabs down onto the floor.

"Why did you come back like this? You're not allowed to go to the club anymore!" he warned.

Cara walked out and saw Winter hammering her fists against Austin's chest.

"You can't control me like this! I'm going to keep drinking and keep going to clubs at night! I'm going to find other men, fall in love with them, give birth to their kids, and call them cute nicknames!"

Austin immediately pulled Winter into his embrace, the veins on his neck popping.

Winter was still loudly shouting angry, hurtful words at him in a muffled voice as if she finally had a venting outlet. Austin quickly lowered his head and kissed her on the lips, trying to calm her down.

"Winnie… Baby… My baby…"

Cara stood at the stairway and heard the sound of them kissing passionately.

She had heard Austin calling her "baby" once after a party. That time, Austin had taken the initiative to kiss her, repeatedly calling her "baby".

She used to treasure that memory in her mind, never imagining that she was just a substitute for someone else, or perhaps, a tool for someone else's sexual gratification.

Cara's eyes lowered. She put the lollipop into her mouth, but somehow, the taste was bitter on her tongue.

She spat it out and threw it in the trash.

It might have been five minutes, or it might have only been just one, but finally, the two people kissing downstairs stopped after Winter passed out from the alcohol.

Austin carried her up in his arms and brought her upstairs.

Cara hid behind the door, watching as they both entered the room together and never came out for the rest of the night.

The next morning, it was drizzling.

When Austin came out of Winter's room, his face was cold and expressionless.

They went to the cemetery in the hills to pay their respects to Austin's parents, like they did last year, on their death anniversary. However, this time, Cara didn't chat or banter much with them anymore, and the atmosphere was somewhat awkward.

"Go out first. I have something I want to tell Mom and Dad," Austin suddenly said to Cara.

Half of Austin's head was hidden in the dark at the cemetery, and Cara couldn't quite see the expression on his face.

She didn't go down the hill as she was told. Instead, she hid behind a tree nearby and eavesdropped on him.

Austin fell to his knees before his parents' tombstone.

"Mom, Dad, I'm sorry. I did something I never should have done with Winter. But don't worry. I won't overstep my boundaries again. I'll only continue protecting her silently as her older brother for the rest of her life."

Winter's voice could be heard not too far off. She had arrived at the cemetery with an umbrella in her hands and was walking slowly toward him.

"Austin! I'm here to bring you home!" she exclaimed.

Austin wasn't as affectionate with her as usual. He made Cara stand between himself and Winter, and he refused to make any eye contact with her.

Halfway home, Winter suddenly stopped and began to cry, tears rolling down her face like waterworks.

"You're abandoning me after introducing Cara to Mom and Dad, aren't you? Should I just move out and live on my own after today?" she asked.

Austin looked at her in confusion.

"What are you trying to say? Winter! Watch out!"

Suddenly, a bolt of lightning flashed across the sky and struck the cherry blossom tree by the roadside. A huge branch broke off the tree, sending both Cara and Winter tumbling down the path until both their bodies hung precariously over the cliff.

Austin immediately jumped down and grabbed both Cara's and Winter's wrists at the same time, tiny rocks tumbling down from the top of the cliff.

His hand was split, and his blood dripped onto Cara's pale, terrified face as the rocks under her feet began cracking with a bone-chilling sound.

Winter suddenly screamed, "Austin! Austin, let go! You'll get dragged down with us!"

Austin's pupils constricted. The weight of their bodies, interlocked together by their fingers, was slowly causing the rocks to break and chip off.

At the most crucial life-and-death moment, he suddenly felt Cara's fingers loosen from his grip. He looked at her broken face and heard her whispering, "You've already decided who you're going to save anyway, haven't you, Austin Langford?

"Why are you still pretending to hesitate?"

"Shut up!"

Austin was just distracted for a split second, but he never felt more panicked or flustered than before. Then, Cara watched expectantly as he yanked Winter back to safety.

Rocks flew everywhere. He saw Cara reaching toward a dried, broken branch protruding by the side of the cliff, but it was rotten and beginning to make cracking sounds under Cara's weight.

Cara was literally dangling mid-air with the deep valley beneath her feet.

Austin's expression changed drastically. He tried to rush forward to save her, but Winter quickly hugged him from the back.

"Austin! You can't go there! It's already collapsed. You'll never save her!"

"Winter! Let go!"

Cara watched as the two of them continued getting entangled with each other, but she remained unusually calm.

"You don't have to save me, Austin. I just wish that I'll never meet you again in my next life, if there's one. I'll just find someone who loves me, have a family with him, and spend the rest of my life with him."

Right after Cara spoke, a sickening crack was heard as the branch she was standing on snapped in half.

A split second before Cara plummeted into the valley, she suddenly saw a figure dashing toward her.

Austin stood before Cara, his eyes filled with an intense pleading look. "Cara, please, I'm begging you. Don't marry him. Please," he pleaded.Noah immediately shielded Cara behind him and questioned in a hostile tone, "What, are you going to try and steal the bride now?"Austin ignored him and looked only at Cara. "Cara, I want to hear it from you alone."Cara didn't answer him, and Austin felt even more despair. He ended up dropping to his knees before her and said, "I don't mind if you don't give me a title. Just please, let me stay by your side."As soon as he said that, the rest of the wedding guests were even more shocked. Was the person kneeling onstage before Cara their usually calm, steady, and meticulous city mayor? How could he just publicly admit that he wanted to be the other man in Cara's marriage?Austin ignored the shocked whispers below the stage. He only wanted to hear Cara's answer.Suddenly, a flash of silver caught his attention. While everyone was still

Luckily, Noah caught her before she fell.Meanwhile, Austin felt his head buzzing loudly. He suddenly recalled a prayer place located on top of a hill on the outskirts of the city. Whoever managed to climb up all 100 steps would have their wish granted. He pressed his lips together and immediately left the hospital. There were exactly 100 steps leading up to the prayer place, just as the legend said there would be. The blinding sunlight made Austin squint as he stepped out of the hospital.Moments later, a hunched-up figure lunged at his feet and gripped his pant leg tightly. "Austin… Save me…"The figure's voice was low and hoarse, like sandpaper scraping against stone. Austin looked down, and his pupil constricted almost immediately. It was Winter.Winter, the once haughty and arrogant daughter of the Langford family, was now dressed in tattered clothing and covered in festering wounds crawling with bugs and flies. Her right leg was twisted and deformed, and she looked like a stray dog who'd just had its spine snapped in two."Austin… I was wrong… Please bring me home…"Winter looked up at Austin as bloodied tears fell down her face, her stench overwhelming him.Austin gulped. The 20 years he'd spent doting on her clashed with the betrayal he felt, and it just kept tearing at his chest.Winter might have been his younger stepsister, whom he'd doted on and spoiled for 20 years. However,

"Austin? Austin!"The voice sounded faraway, and it was so gentle that it made Austin's heart tremble. He suddenly opened his eyes and saw in the blinding light that Cara was standing right in front of him, her lips curved upward in a familiar smile as she held a beautiful baby in her arms."What are you daydreaming about?" she asked, stepping forward to hand the baby to him."Little Cupcake knows how to say 'papa' now. Hurry up and hold her!"Austin awkwardly held his hand out until he could touch the baby's warm cheeks. It was as soft as a cloud. The little baby didn't cry or make a fuss either and just stared at him with her huge eyes, reaching instinctively for his fingers. Her grip on his finger felt so heavy and real."Why are you still standing there, dazed like that? Go on and hold her. Don't drop her, alright?" Cara said with a playful frown.Austin held on tightly to the baby in his arms, her unique scent mixing with Cara's as they wafted into his nose and made his ey

Jessica's scream was still echoing in the air when two figures dashed toward the staircase like lightning bolts.Austin was closer to Cara, and he quickly threw himself at Cara, grabbing her by the wrist with his right hand. However, the momentum was just too great, and he quickly lost his balance."Let go!" Noah yelled, crashing in from the side and trying to push Cara back to safety."No, Noah, it's dangerous here!"Austin then landed heavily on his back, but he refused to let go of Cara's wrist. Meanwhile, Noah tried grabbing Cara's other hand and fell forward as well. The three of them got all tangled up together and began rolling down the marble steps like a top spinning out of control.Austin kept cushioning the impact of the fall, taking the brunt of the force. Meanwhile, Noah did everything in his power to protect Cara's head the entire journey down.Cara was trapped between the two men trying to protect her and couldn't move at all. Austin was sent to the hospital right away, and the villa soon resumed its usual peace. One afternoon, at the table, Jessica frowned and asked, "Cara? I thought you liked seared salmon, but you haven't touched it."The fish fillet was still whole and untouched on Cara's plate.Cara shook her head and instinctively caressed her belly. She had a hunch about things, but she didn't dare to confirm it yet. She decided that she was just going to wait for Noah to come back with the test report. While thinking about it, the door was suddenly thrown open. Noah came flying into the villa like a hurricane, sweeping Cara into his arms and spinning her in the air. He was laughing loudly in such a giddy way that Cara could feel her eardrums quivering."Cara! I'm going to be a dad!" he exclaimed.Jessica spilled her soup on the table as tears gushed from her eyes. "Really? Wait, you're not lying to us, are you?"The entire household rejoiced and was filled with laughter. However, a split seco
