ANYA’S POV

The man outside our hotel room knocked a third time. Adam kept himself between the door and Tara while speaking to the front desk.

“Security is coming up,” he said quietly. “Nobody opens this door until I say so.”

“Mrs Ross,” the man called. “I only need a minute.”

My grip tightened around my phone. Liam had sent me a message about the lake house, and now someone was outside a room he should never have known I was in.

“Who sent you?” I called.

He didn't answer. Footsteps approached,

  • His To Own   CHAPTER 84: The Traitor In The Room

KANE’S POVBy the time we left the garage, the police had Paige’s flash drive, footage of the van taking her, and Voss’s name. It was more than we had when we arrived, but it still wasn't enough to find her.Daniel stood beside my car, speaking to one of the officers. When he ended the call, Anya approached him.“Have they found her?”“Not yet. They're following up on the freight company and checking the addresses connected to the van. The police are treating it as an abduction.”“Then what are we supposed to do while they search?”“Give them room to work,” Daniel replied. “I'll stay here and coordinate with them. You should both get somewhere safe.”Anya turned to me. “I want to go home.”“I'll drive you.”She hesitated before nodding. We barely spoke during the journey. I wanted to reassure her that Paige would be foun

  • His To Own   CHAPTER 83: Copies

KANE’S POVThe interview room door opened nearly four hours after Anya had gone inside. I stood as soon as her lawyer stepped into the corridor.“She’s free to leave,” he said. “The detective wants the original authorisation examined, along with the bank’s verification and submission records. We’ll follow up through the proper channels.”Anya appeared behind him. She looked exhausted, but she managed to meet my eyes.“Kane, take me home.”I reached for her bag. She held on to it, so I let my hand fall.We drove in silence until she asked me to stop outside her house. Cassie opened the front door before we reached it and pulled Anya into her arms.“Are you all right?”“I'm tired,” Anya admitted. “And hungry. Is there anything to eat?”“There's soup. I'll heat i

  • His To Own   CHAPTER 82: The Beneficiary

ANYA’S POV“Both, Mrs Ross. Your name is now part of the investigation.”I looked at Kane. He stood beside the kitchen counter, giving me room to answer for myself.“When would you like me to come in?”“This afternoon, if you're available.”“I can come at two. I'll bring a lawyer with me.”“That would be sensible. I'll have someone at the front desk expecting you.”“Will you explain what new information you've uncovered when I arrive?”“We'll explain what we can. Some of the material is still being reviewed.”“All right. I'll see you at two.”I ended the call and stared at my cold tea.Kane glanced at the clock. “It's nearly two in the morning. You should get some sleep.”Going back to my house wasn't an option, not after Liam's threat. I couldn't bear the thought of wondering whether someone had been inside again.“Can I stay here tonight?”“Of course. You can use the guest room.”“Thank you.”“I know a lawyer who handles financial investigations. I can give you her number, and you c

  • His To Own   CHAPTER 81: Everything

ANYA’S POVThe elevator doors opened on Kane's floor. He was already waiting outside his apartment, one hand resting against the doorframe and his phone in the other. When he saw me, he lowered it without ending the call.“She’s here,” he told whoever was listening. “I'll call you back.”He put the phone away and looked me over. His gaze lingered on my face before dropping to the dirt on my shoes.“Anya.”“I know it's early.”“You don't have to explain that.” He stepped aside. “Are you hurt?”“No.” My throat tightened. “I'm scared, though.”His expression changed. “Did someone follow you?”“I don't think so. The driver dropped me at the entrance, and I came straight upstairs.”“Come in.”He moved farther away from the doorway, giving me room to pass. I walked into the living room and stopped near the sofa. I had come here because I needed help, but standing in his apartment brought back everything that had happened between us. I pushed those thoughts aside. Whatever remained between K

  • His To Own   CHAPTER 80: The Longest Night

KANE’S POVI reached the Meridian Hotel less than twenty minutes after the call. Anya was already gone. I parked across the street and called Daniel before I could talk myself into going inside.“Tell me what happened.”“Anya left in a taxi shortly after two. Our man kept his distance, but he lost the car after three blocks. Nobody stopped her or spoke to her.”“Does Adam know?”“I called him. He checked her room. She left a note for Tara, but it didn't say where she was going.”I stared at the hotel entrance. Liam had told Anya to come to the lake house. That much I knew. What I didn't know was whether she'd gone there, chosen somewhere safer, or found herself in a situation she couldn't get out of.“Could she be heading to the lake?”“She could. She could also be going to the hospital to see her fa

  • His To Own   CHAPTER 79: The Lake House

ANYA’S POVThe taxi driver glanced at me in his mirror for the third time. “Are you sure you want to go all the way out there, miss?”“Yes,” I said, although my hands were shaking inside my coat pockets. “Please keep driving.”I left the hotel a little after two in the morning. Tara and Adam were asleep, and I had walked out through the side entrance before I could lose my nerve. A lot had happened over the past few days. My father had collapsed, Liam had sent another threat, and I had learned that a signature I barely remembered could put Ross Empire and me in serious trouble. The ambulance had taken my father from the diner. At the hospital, a doctor told me he was stable but needed further tests. I had waited until the staff assured me he was being monitored before returning to Tara and Adam's hotel. The brass key he had given me was still in my pocket. It might lead to the Crimson ledger, but I couldn't just walk into the Bank and demand that they open the box. I needed to find ou
