Chapter 5

Author: Elara Vance
Sophia’s POV

I turned off my phone as the plane pierced through the cloud layer, leaving the glittering lights of the city far below.

Outside the porthole was an endless abyss of darkness. I looked down at my hands. The red crescent marks where Sophie had dug her nails into my wrist were still visible, throbbing in time with the dull ache on my arm where Carlos had thrown me to the ground.

Five years.

Five years of blood, bullets, and silence. It felt like a long, grotesque nightmare. Now, I was finally awake.

I had left with nothing but the clothes on my back and the scars on my heart.

Third Person POV

Meanwhile, back in New York.

Carlos stood at the entrance of the private banquet hall, watching Sophie run down the corridor, her theatrical sobs echoing off the marble walls.

His instinct was to chase her—that was the script, that was the deal with the Old Don. But his feet felt like they were encased in cement.

He couldn't shake the image of Sophia’s eyes right before she walked away.

Third Person POVGetting into the Johnson estate was nearly impossible, but Carlos managed to slip past the outer perimeter, his tuxedo disheveled, his eyes wild. When he finally laid eyes on her in the grand ballroom, his breath hitched. This was not the Sophia he knew. She was draped in a white haute couture gown that hugged her figure, her hair swept up to reveal an elegant, swan-like neck. She wasn't the submissive assistant anymore; she was the radiant, untouchable Princess of the Johnson Family. She stood beside Julian Kennedy. He whispered something in her ear, and Sophia laughed—a brilliant, genuine sound that Carlos hadn't heard in five years."Sophia!" Carlos shoved past a waiter, ignoring the security guards closing in. He rushed to the stage. The music cut. The chatter died. All eyes fixed on the intruder.Sophia turned. There was no fear in her eyes. No hatred. Just the polite, chilling detachment one offers a stranger."Sir," she said coolly, "I believe you have the wrong

Third Person POVThe first week of Sophia’s disappearance, a suffocating gloom descended over the Genovese headquarters. The air was thick with unexploded violence.Sophie had officially taken over the role of Director of Operations. She paraded through the corridors wearing pencil skirts that mimicked Sophia’s style, doused in a cloying rose perfume that Sophia would have despised."Caro, look at this contract." Sophie leaned over the mahogany desk, her smile practiced, attempting to perch on the arm of his leather chair.Carlos shifted away imperceptibly, his eyes cold. "In this building, address me as Don Genovese."Sophie’s smile faltered. She bit her lip, tears welling up on command. "Carlos, are you still angry about the necklace? I told you, I was just so nervous that night...""The necklace is irrelevant," Carlos interrupted, staring at her face. It was the face he thought he loved for years. But now, superimposed over her features was the image of Sophia—stoic, broken, and ble

Sophia’s POVCarlos released me instantly, sprinting toward the front hall without a backward glance."Sophie, amore, what is it?"Sophie pointed to her bare neck, sobbing uncontrollably, her chest heaving for effect."Carlos... the necklace... It’s gone! That diamond choker your mother gave me... the family heirloom... It was on my neck just before I went to the powder room!"Sophie locked eyes with me as I entered the room. She lunged forward, grabbing my arm with tear-filled eyes."Miss Johnson... just now, in the restroom, it was only you and me. I felt faint and took it off to splash water on my face. You were standing right next to me.""I know you might hate me because of what happened today... but that necklace means everything to the Genovese Family.""If you took it, please, just give it back. I won't tell anyone!"Her words were a masterclass in manipulation. She didn't just accuse me of theft; she accused me of treason against the Genovese Family legacy. The whispers from t

Sophia’s POVSince I had been running the logistics division for years, everyone tacitly accepted that I was the manager in all but name. But Carlos, right in front of his staff, added Sophie—who had parachuted in from nowhere—to the encrypted company channel. They sent messages one after another.Unless you were blind, you couldn't miss their matching profile pictures. The room erupted in envious whistles and cheers.Carlos suddenly tapped his phone, signaling me to check my private messages."Sophia, this engagement is purely political. Don't misunderstand.""My father, the Old Don, is dying. This is his last wish. I’m just playing the part to keep the families happy."I couldn't help but let out a dry, humorless laugh. Carlos still thought he could gaslight me, treating me like a naive child.I had no interest in watching their public display of affection. I turned to go back to my office—or what used to be my office—to pack my personal stuff. But Sophie grabbed my hand.Hidden from the

I’m going to be a father.""I promise you, Sophie, I will take care of you and the heir. You are my priority now."I watched like a pathetic voyeur from the shadows of the taxi, witnessing them walk arm-in-arm into the their love nest.I stared blankly at the luxury apartment complex that was now their fortress.A rough hand holding a paper napkin broke my trance. The cab driver, an older woman with tired eyes who looked like she’d seen everything this city had to offer, sighed."Wipe your face, kid. Men like that? They're all the same. "Only then did I realize my face was wet."Thank you," I whispered, accepting the stranger's kindness. On the ride back to the penthouse, I dialed the number I hadn't called in years."Mama.
