Chapter 3

Author: Enlightened
When I first met Hunter, he was still a long way from becoming the casino king of the Sable Isles.

He was just a small-time thug who had been caught stealing and thrown out of the gang. They broke his limbs and left him to die in the snow.

My mother had lost a power struggle with my father's mistress. They riddled her with bullets and dumped her in the sea to feed the fish. There was not even a body left to bury.

That left me at the very bottom of the gang, where anyone could kick me around.

I wore hand-me-downs from others and ate spoiled food when I could get any leftovers at all. I was barely better off than a rat in the gutter.

When I found Hunter on the verge of death, I could not leave him there.

It took all my strength to haul him back to my room. I used the ointment I had been saving to treat his wounds.

He lay at death's door for a month before he finally stirred. His fever had not broken. His eyes struggled to focus.

As he drifted in and out of consciousness, he kept asking why I had saved him.

"Why didn't you let me die? People like me are born to be walked all over!"

I was furious. "How do you know things won't change if you don't even try?

"Even I can find the courage to keep going. What gives you the right to give up? I saved your life, so you don't get to throw it away without my say-so! I'm ordering you to make something of yourself!"

That evening, the setting sun turned the sky red as blood.

He stared at me for a long time, though I could tell he was barely taking in my face.

Before the fever pulled him under again, he murmured, "Evangeline, you saved my life. I'll repay you someday."

I managed a bright smile.

At the time, I thought nothing of him calling me Evangeline. Looking back, he must have read her name on the clothes I was wearing. After the fever, he remembered the name but not my face.

I checked myself out of the hospital.

I had planned to visit a funeral home and pick out a nice coffin for myself, but Hunter called before I could go.

"It's Evangeline's birthday. I'm throwing her a party on a cruise ship. You're coming."

I could not turn him down, so I went.

As soon as I boarded, I ran into Evangeline.

Her lips were painted a bold red. Her black curls fell to her waist.

There was smugness on her face when she saw me.

"You know by now, don't you? Gareth isn't the only one who'd die for me. Hunter would too. So what if I'm marrying Gareth? One word from me, and Hunter would still put his life on the line.

"I hear you two are going to the city hall tomorrow?"

She flicked ash from her cigarette.

"What if I killed you on your way there? Do you think Hunter would blame me?"

I frowned. "You can try. If I die, I'm taking you with me."

She froze for a moment, unnerved by how serious I was. Then, she flew into a rage and wrapped her hands around my throat.

"Do you think I'm afraid to die? I'm Dad's only real daughter. You're just his illegitimate daughter. What makes you think you can threaten me? I'll make sure you spend the rest of your life settling for the men I throw away! Die!"

Her grip tightened until my vision darkened. I stumbled backward and slammed my head against the railing.

As I tipped over the edge, I grabbed Evangeline by the collar.

Splash!

We fell into the sea together.

The freezing water filled my mouth and nose. As I struggled to breathe, I saw Hunter swimming toward me.

For a moment, hope stirred in my chest. Then, I saw him swim right past me.

He went straight to Evangeline, caught her in his arms, and lifted her out of the water.

He never once looked back at me, even though he knew I could not swim.

As seawater filled my lungs, I watched him carry her away. Somehow, my heart did not hurt quite so much any longer.

After that day, Hunter seemed to disappear.I did not see him again. There were no more flowers. He stopped asking about me.I thought he had finally given up.Three months later, I went on vacation to an island.Sand, sunshine, and clear blue water.I lay beneath a beach umbrella, sipping coconut water and reading a book.It was bliss. Then, I noticed a familiar figure out of the corner of my eye.Hunter stood on a rocky outcrop nearby, his back to me as he looked out to sea.The wind lifted his shirt, exposing a bandage around his waist.Blood seeped through it.I frowned and waved over a resort attendant."What's going on with that man?"The attendant glanced at Hunter and sighed."Mr. Stormvale? He's been staying here for three months. He stands on that rock every day, from morning until night.""What about the bandage?""A few days ago, a guest fell into the water. He jumped in to save them and cut himself badly on the rocks. The doctor told him to stay in bed, but

The car pulled up to the Vance family home.My father and brother were waiting by the door, both smiling."Juniper, you're back! Are you hungry? I can ask the kitchen to make you some pasta.""No thanks, Dad. I'm tired. I just want to sleep.""Of course. Go get some rest."I went upstairs and opened my bedroom door. The room was spacious and warmly decorated.A photo album sat on the nightstand.I opened it to find photographs of myself from childhood onward. There I was at school overseas, out with friends, and at graduation.Every photograph came with a memory of this new life. There was no Hunter, no Gareth, and no Evangeline.Just me.I closed the album and slipped beneath the soft covers.Moonlight shone through the window."Good night, host."Good night.Three years later, I had taken over the family business. I became the youngest, richest woman in the Sable Isles. One day, I attended a business summit. The hall was crowded. People gathered around me as we tal

When I opened my eyes again, I was the only daughter of the richest man in the Sable Isles.I was eighteen, newly home from studying abroad and about to take over the family business.I had a father who adored me and an older brother who always looked out for me. No one in the Sable Isles dared cross me.One evening, my father took me to a party."Sweetheart, there's someone I want you to meet tonight.""Who?""Hunter Stormvale. He's young, but he's built quite an empire. I think you two might hit it off."I stopped walking.Hunter.Hearing his name still hurt."What's wrong?""Nothing." I smiled. "Let's go."The ballroom buzzed with conversation and the clink of glasses.I followed my father through the crowd, smiling and making small talk. Then, he appeared.Hunter wore a black suit. He stood tall. His expression was unreadable. He looked more mature than I remembered. He was thinner and older. His eyes were dull, as if nothing could reach him anymore."Mr. Stormva

"Ding! Hunter's affection score has risen from −200 to 100, then to 500, and finally to 1,000. The score has exceeded the system's limit. Mission complete."The host's vital signs are failing. Would you like to spend your points on a chance at rebirth?"With the last of my strength, I selected "Yes"."You have enough points. Rebirth starting in three… Two… One. Rebirth complete. New body linked."White light flashed before my eyes. When I opened them again, I was staring at a ceiling I did not recognize.I moved my fingers. They responded.I looked down at myself. This was a new body, young, healthy, and full of energy."System notice: Your identity has been reset. You may return to your original timeline or begin a new one."I was quiet for a moment."What happened to everyone after I died?""Would you like to see?""Show me."A glowing screen appeared before me.It showed my funeral.Hunter stood motionless in front of my grave. He had lost so much weight that his eye

My body hit the floor hard, but I had not quite lost consciousness.I heard the wedding coordinator scream. Tables and chairs crashed over, and someone shouted for an ambulance. The clearest sound was Hunter's trembling voice."No. How could it have been you? Stay awake. Please, stay awake!"He tried to reach me, but Gareth blocked his way."Have you lost your mind? She's dying! Do you want her bad luck rubbing off on you?""Out of my way!"I had never heard Hunter speak to Gareth like that.He stumbled to my side. His hands hovered over me, shaking too badly for him to touch me."Juniper, open your eyes. Look at me."I struggled to open my eyes and met his gaze. His eyes were red.How ridiculous. In six years, it was the first time I had seen something real in his eyes.It was guilt."It was you," he said, his voice raw. "Why didn't you tell me?"I tried to laugh, but coughed up blood instead."What good would it have done? Would you have believed me?"He went still.

  • His Wedding, My Funeral   Chapter 4

Hunter had scheduled our wedding for the same day as Evangeline's.It was a lavish affair. Luxury cars lined the streets. Almost every gang boss was there.Colorful balloons filled the sky over Tidemere. Everyone kept telling me how lucky I was.Perhaps he felt a little guilty, because his voice was unusually gentle when he spoke to me. "Evangeline liked your wedding dress, so I gave it to her. This one looks the same. It's just a formality anyway."My lips felt dry as I forced a smile. "That's all right. This one is nice too."His expression faltered, as though he had expected me to argue.Well, what did it matter what I wore to my death? While Hunter and I waited to walk down the aisle, Evangeline leaned in beside me and spoke so softly only I could hear. The malice and jealousy in her eyes were unmistakable."I didn't think you'd take it so well. I stole your wedding dress, and you managed to act cool with it. You're just like that harlot of a mother of yours, picking up m
