Chapter 5: The Alpha's Cruel Rejection

"I, Driven Veyl, reject you, Elena Moonveil, as my fated mate!"

The words struck harder than any blade.

For one breathless moment, the entire ceremony fell silent. Then hundreds of whispers erupted beneath the blood-red moon.

Elena stared at the Alpha standing before her. His palm still bore the silver crescent that matched the mark on her wrist. The mate bond pulsed between them, undeniable and alive.

"Say something," she whispered, struggling to recognize the man who had looked at her as though she mattered only moments ago.

Driven's jaw tightened. His golden eyes flickered, and beneath his controlled expression, something savage fought to break free.

His wolf was screaming.

Mine. Protect her. Take back the words.

But Driven forced his wolf down.

"I will not accept a wolfless servant as my Luna," he declared loudly enough for every member of Blackthorn Pack to hear. "The bond is a mistake, and I refuse it."

Elena felt the first tear slip down her cheek.

A cruel laugh came from somewhere in the crowd.

Someone muttered that the Moon Goddess had made an embarrassing choice. Another voice called Elena a curse upon the pack.

She heard every word.

Yet the worst pain came from the man who refused to meet her eyes.

"Look at me," Elena said.

Driven's gaze remained fixed on the ground between them.

"Please," she added, hating how small her voice sounded.

His fingers curled into fists. For a heartbeat, she thought he might change his mind.

Then Lady Isadora Frostvale stepped beside him, placing a hand on his arm.

"The pack needs a strong Luna," Isadora said coldly. "Not a girl who cannot even summon a wolf."

Elena turned toward her. "I wasn't speaking to you."

Isadora's smile vanished.

A few startled gasps rose from the crowd. Nobody spoke to a noblewoman that way, least of all a servant who had spent her life being ordered around.

Driven finally looked at Elena.

"Enough."

The command carried the force of an Alpha's authority. Several wolves lowered their heads immediately.

Elena remained standing.

"Is that all you have to say to me?" she asked. "After the Moon Goddess tied our lives together?"

"I have made my decision."

"Then tell me why your hand is shaking."

Driven glanced down.

His fingers were trembling violently. The crescent on his palm burned beneath his skin, but he closed his fist before anyone else could notice.

"Guards," he ordered. "Take her away."

Two warriors approached Elena.

She stepped back before they could touch her. "Don't."

The warning was quiet, but something in her voice made both men hesitate.

Driven's expression hardened. "You will obey your Alpha."

Elena looked at him for a long moment, searching for even a trace of the man fate had chosen for her.

She found fear.

Not fear of losing her.

Fear of what accepting her might cost him.

The realization hurt more than his rejection.

"So that's what I am to you," she said, wiping her cheek. "A threat to your position."

Driven's lips parted, but no answer came.

"Tell me I'm worthless again," Elena challenged. "Tell me you feel nothing."

His wolf slammed against the inside of his mind.

Liar. You're destroying her.

Driven's face twisted for an instant. Then he looked toward the assembled council, the watching nobles, and Isadora's expectant expression.

"I feel nothing for you."

The bond shattered.

Elena screamed.

Pain ripped through her chest as though invisible claws had torn into her heart. Her knees buckled, and she caught herself against the stone altar. The silver crescent on her wrist blazed so brightly that people stumbled away from her.

The blood moon darkened.

Every torch around the ceremony ground went out.

A wave of silver light exploded from Elena, sweeping across the clearing. Warriors dropped to their knees. Wolves whined and pressed their bellies against the earth. Even the High Priestess fell forward, her forehead striking the stone.

Driven staggered, clutching his chest.

His wolf howled in agony.

"What's happening?" Isadora shrieked, scrambling away from him.

Elena could no longer hear the crowd. Their frightened voices faded beneath a deep, ancient sound rising from somewhere inside her.

A heartbeat.

Not hers.

Something older.

The crescent on her wrist stretched into a circle, forming a crown of silver flames. Symbols appeared along her skin, glowing like stars beneath the surface.

The High Priestess lifted her head. Terror had drained every trace of color from her face.

"The rejection has awakened her," she whispered.

One of the elders stared at Elena. "Impossible. The Moon Sovereigns were exterminated generations ago."

"Then explain what you are seeing!" the High Priestess cried.

No one dared answer.

Elena pushed herself upright. Tears still clung to her lashes, but the agony inside her was changing. Beneath the shattered bond, a strange warmth spread through her body, steady and powerful.

She looked at Driven.

He was on one knee, his breathing ragged, his face twisted with pain.

For the first time that night, he looked afraid of her.

"Undo it," he rasped.

Elena blinked. "What?"

"The bond." He struggled to stand, but his legs nearly gave way. "Stop whatever you're doing."

A bitter laugh escaped her.

"You rejected me, and now you want me to save you?"

"I didn't know-"

"You didn't know what?" Her voice cracked. "That I could be useful? That the girl you humiliated might possess something you wanted?"

Driven flinched.

Elena stepped away from the altar. Silver light followed her movements, curling around her fingers like living mist.

"I begged you to look at me," she said. "You couldn't even do that."

"I had a duty to my pack."

"And I had a heart."

Silence swallowed the clearing.

For one moment, Driven looked as if she had struck him across the face. His hand reached toward her, instinct overriding pride.

Elena recoiled.

"Don't touch me."

His arm fell.

The words were simple, but something final settled between them. Whatever hope she had carried into the ceremony had died with the bond.

The High Priestess rose unsteadily and bowed before Elena.

"My Sovereign," she whispered.

A wave of horrified murmurs swept through the crowd.

The elders followed her, one after another, lowering themselves before the girl they had spent years treating as nothing.

Driven stared at them, disbelief warring with pain.

"Get up," he commanded.

Not one person moved.

"I am your Alpha!"

The High Priestess slowly lifted her face. "And she is the bloodline your ancestors tried to erase."

Elena's breath caught.

"My ancestors?"

Before the priestess could answer, the council's oldest elder stepped forward. His eyes were fixed on Elena's glowing wrist.

"Seize her," he ordered. "If she is truly the last Moon Sovereign, she must never leave this ceremony alive."

The guards drew their weapons.

Driven rose unsteadily. "No one touches her."

The elder's expression sharpened. "You rejected her, Alpha. You have no claim over her now."

Driven had no answer.

Elena backed toward the altar as the warriors closed in. Silver fire gathered around her hands, but she had no idea how to control it.

Then a voice thundered through her mind.

Blood of the Moon. Do not kneel.

The ground split beneath the elder's feet.

A towering pillar of silver light erupted from the altar, swallowing Elena whole. The warriors were hurled backward, and the crowd scattered in panic.

When the light faded, Elena stood untouched.

But the altar behind her had cracked down the middle, revealing an ancient symbol carved into its heart: a crowned wolf beneath a crescent moon.

The High Priestess began to weep.

"The seal," she whispered. "Someone has broken the seal."

Far beyond Blackthorn territory, something answered with a howl so powerful that the blood moon trembled.

Every wolf in the clearing dropped to the ground.

Every wolf except Driven.

He stared at Elena, his face drained of color, as a final message appeared across his palm in burning silver letters.

THE SOVEREIGN LIVES. THE KING WILL COME.
