Elena sat in silence watching Lucien play chess. Her heart was heavy with the information she had just heard. She had always thought Jason's betrayal was fueled by selfishness. But never had she thought it could be something beyond that— something she hadn't foreseen.

How much had he detested her that he had to put her through this?

The day she had served him the divorce papers he had signed them right away, as if he too had grown tired of the marriage.

“You finally came, Lucien Black.” The bald headed man set down his cutlery, rising and extending his hand. “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you after all these years.”Lucien’s gaze momentarily rested on the outstretched hand before moving to the man’s face. “I don’t think we’re on good enough terms for a handshake, Don Malo.” He pulled out a chair and sat.Don Malo let out a long loud laugh as he settled back into his seat. “You haven’t changed a bit, Mr. Black. I’d be surprised if you had.” He clapped once and a waiter stepped forward, placing a menu before Lucien. “Order whatever you like. I rented out this entire restaurant specifically for our meeting.”Lucien’s lips lifted into an unimpressed smile. “You know clearly why I’m here. Stop pretending we’re long lost friends and let’s get straight to business.” He

"Have you checked the kitchen?" Lucien asked, scratching the edge of his brow. "Or the garden?""I've searched everywhere. Anne said she hasn't seen her all morning either." Sara explained. "Do you think something bad happened to her?" She looked to him, waiting for reassurance. He shrugged. "I'm certain she's fine. She must be somewhere on the estate.""How can you be so sure?" Sara whined, crossing her arms. "You always warn me to be careful because of your enemies. What if she's been taken or something?"Lucien shook his head. "I had no idea you could be this dumb sometimes."She glared at him. "Take that back, Lu.""Or what?" He chuckled.Sara looked away, offended. He let out a soft breath, walking to where she stood and placed a hand on her shoulder. She shook it off. He placed it again, this time gripping firmly enough that she couldn't.He steered her toward the staircase and they climbed together. "When I tell you to be careful because of my enemies I mean outside these walls

Lucien's phone pressed against his ear. "I've sent you the details via text. I need a lead before the week runs out."His eyes shifted to Elena curled up beside him, sleeping soundly. A smile appeared on his lips and his fingers moved of their own accord, gently lifting the strands of hair covering her face.He was still getting used to seeing her with short hair."Mr. Black." The voice at the other end called. "What do you think about it?"He cleared his throat and sat up, leaning against the headboard. "Could you repeat that? I wasn't listening.""Of course, sir. I said I was out of town and wouldn't be back until the end of the week. I'm thinking of sending my best men to start the investigation.""Sure. They can start before you return." He paused, his gaze shifting back to Elena. "Inform them there will be a reward for whoever brings me useful information first.""Brilliant, Mr. Black. The news of a reward will heighten their performance. Rest assured there will be news soon.""I

Elena's fingers ran through Lucien's hair as he trailed light kisses along her neck. He bit a spot, suckling on it, and a soft moan escaped her lips as her eyes closed, drawn away by the sensation. This wasn't right. She shouldn't be doing this. But her body said otherwise.Another moan left her when his hand wrapped around her waist and slowly moved underneath her top, caressing her burning skin as it found its way to the curve of her breast, tracing it slowly. Elena's lips parted slightly and her hand gripped his hair tighter.Lucien's lips suddenly left her neck and before she could register it they pressed against hers for a second before moving to her lower lip, sucking it slowly as his hand beneath her top gripped her breast, his thumb circling her nipple. She shivered at the combination, moaning into his mouth as she deepened the kiss. Her free hand moved up his chest, feeling its hardness as it trailed down to his abdomen. He pulled away.Elena's eyes flew open. Her mind ease

"Thank you," Elena whispered as Lucien held the door open for her. She stepped in, her eyes travelling around the room.It hadn't changed a bit since the last time she had been here. It still carried that dark and gloomy air — the curtains were closed and the lights dim.The door banged shut behind her. She flinched, turning to its direction.Lucien was holding the handle. "Did I startle you? Sorry, the door has been having issues for a few days now. I'll have James check on it tomorrow." He touched a button on the lock interface and the door made a clicking sound."What's that sound?" she asked, even though she already knew the answer. It felt strange being in a closed space like this, alone with him. And she had no idea why it did."The security lock," he replied, walking past her. "Have a seat."Her eyes swept around the room once more, searching. There was none."Mr. Black," she called out, but her voice had been too low for him to hear.He was seated at the edge of the bed, a draw

He had asked, going through them."Yes." She answered quietly, looking away.He nodded, reaching for a paper from the pile on his office table. "Sign this." He handed it over. She took it and read through it. Pre-nuptial papers. Giving her no right to any share of his properties in the event of divorce."Why are you giving me pre-nuptial papers?""You have to sign them if you want me to sign the divorce papers." He said, not looking up from his computer."I don't need any of your money or properties."He paused
