Chapter 19

Kyle’s wolf crouched down, laying its head on its huge front paw. Sadness emanating from its still body and dimmed golden gaze.

Isobel trembled, her heart racing in her chest that rose with her harsh breaths. Her stomach clenched with fear as her right leg stepped out toward the imposing wolf, when rustling noises from the woods stopped her movements. Kyle’s wolf swiftly stood, its tail stiff and horizontal, a snarl pulled back its muzzle as it loped toward her before turning and standing between her and whatever was making the noises in the woods.

Isobel’s erratic heart caught in her throat as her lips and chin trembled. This was it. She was going to be killed by either that massive wolf or whatever was making that noise. Walking backwards away from the danger, Isobel stooped down behind a rock outcropping near the river. She placed a hand over her mouth to muffle her cries.

“Hey, Isobel,” Kyle called out.

Her back pressed against the hard rock, her shaky hand lifted from her mouth.

“Good morning, my love,” Kyle said, yawning. He was shirtless, wearing flannel sleep pants that hung low around his hips, showing off his v-line and a delicious streak of dark brown hair that disappeared under his pants. His broad shoulders, corded abs, and wide chest spattered with dark hair were all on show as he stretched. “What are you smiling at?” he asked, as he ambled to the wooden kitchen table at her grandfather’s cabin and settled his elbows on it, resting his chin on his palms.“Oh, just a text from a friend,” Isobel answered, her concentration still on the phone. Her hips leaned against the table, her fingers scrolling on the phone.A low growl trembled from his chest. “A friend? What friend?”Isobel glanced away from the phone, rolling her eyes. “A growl? Really Kyle? It’s from my best friend, Loucilla. We call her Lou. We met in college. She’s been checking on me since I’ve been here.”A pink blush coated his cheeks. “Oh. You’ve never mentioned any friends since I’ve kn

Kyle placed the tray, piled with the empty plates and cups, on the wooden kitchen table, when he stilled, his hearing picking up someone’s footsteps nearing his cabin but their scent was masked. Scurrying to the door, he swung it open to see Storm with her hand up about to knock on the door. The witch didn’t look a day over thirty, with blue-black hair and eyes that blazed like the full moon, bright and constantly watching. Bangles made of gold and silver jingled with her movements and tattoos of rune symbols marked every part of her visible flesh other than her face. But the witch was inching closer to 100 years.“Storm? What are you doing here?” Kyle asked, leaning against the doorframe.“Saanvi told me about your new mate, I wanted to meet her.” Her nostrils flared before she scrunched her nose. “I can smell that you are getting pretty acquainted,” she added, smirking. “Can I come in?”Kyle reluctantly moved aside, so that Storm could walk into the cabin’s small living room. He was

Isobel slowly opened her puffy eyes. Her gaze took in the room and she realized that she was in Kyle’s bedroom. This time the sunlight was dimmed down by white lacy curtains that were hastily put up on the curtain rails. Her heart gave a flutter at the thoughtful gesture and a smile danced on her lips. He gave up his need to see the woods for her comfort. Love rushed through her but it was damped by the memories of last night.Kyle placed her on the bed and crawled in with her. Wrapping his arms around her, he pulled her close to him, placing a kiss on her forehead, he shushed her.“Don’t cry Isobel. You’re safe here, nothing will hurt you. Not when I’m here.”Her cries turned to sniffles as she snuggled into him, his warmth and pine-like smell calming her thundering heart. Placing her head on his chest, she closed her eyes and listened to his beating heart.“You don’t have to be afraid of me. Of my wolf. We’ll always protect you,” he said, his arms tightening around her. Cocooning he

“Why didn’t you tell us last night about Isobel?”Kyle glared at his father, who sat behind a massive oak desk in his house office. Isobel was across the hall, lying on the living room couch, being hovered over by his mother.“That night we had agreed to not tell anyone what happened. Honestly, I’m surprised that Saanvi told you,” his father said, leaning back on the office chair, steepling his fingers.“Dr. Kumari thought it was best for us to know, now that Isobel is my mate and carrying our pup. You should have at least told me!”His father placed his hands on the desk and leaned forward, his Alpha power pushing through. “Son, I will allow you to question me this one time as it has to do with your mate, but don’t forget, I am the Alpha. One day when you take over the pack, you will realize the importance of keeping the pack safe and the humans that live amongst us. It’s a thin line sometimes.”“Mr. Killian killed Daxton. Even if her grandfather was saving her life, some shifters in

Dr. Kumari ushered them to her consultation room and closed the door.“Please, you two have a seat,” she said before sitting down behind an office table desk.Isobel pulled her chair closer to the desk and leaned forward. “Dr. Kumari, please tell us about that night. I woke up and didn’t remember anything and my grandfather and parents never told me anything.”“That was our doing. We made sure that any memories from that night are forgotten so that we kept our secret and you healed without the terrifying images of that night.”Kyle held Isobel’s hand and squeezed it. “Who is we, Doctor?”“Storm Barkridge, a witch that is part of the coven that works with our pack.”“Storm?!” Kyle said, his eyes widened in disbelief. “Why would she spell them to remove their memories?”“Because, Kyle, they saw a man turn from wolf to man. You know we couldn’t let that information out. It was the best thing at the time,” Dr. Kumari stated, placing her elbows on the table, steepling her fingers.Kyle’s n
