The elevator chimes were usually ignored in the towering glass monolith of Brooks Global Enterprises. But on the eightieth floor—the executive penthouse suite—that quiet *ding* at 6:55 AM sounded like a death knell.

Pearl Alex didn't flinch. She kept her fingers perfectly steady as she smoothed down the lapels of her crisp, bargain-rack blazer, adjusting it so it looked far more expensive than it actually was. She eyed the massive mahogany desk inside the glass-walled office. On it sat a fresh, steam-kissed cup of single-origin black coffee, brewed at precisely 6:50 AM.

Three secretaries had been escorted out of this very building by security in the past two weeks alone.

The first had been fired for speaking out of turn. The second was fired for wearing a perfume that gave the boss a headache. Funny right.? The third had literally ran out of the building in tears after just four days, leaving her designer shoes behind.

The reason for their terror? Damien Brooks.

At thirty-two, Damien was the youngest, most ruthless CEO to ever seize control of the international logistics empire. The business world called him a visionary. Wall Street called him a shark. The employees on the top floor simply called him the Ice King.

Pearl couldn't afford to be the fourth casualty. She needed this job with a desperation that burned in her chest. The elite private academy her younger sister, Maya, attended had just raised its tuition again, and the medical bills from their late mother’s illness were still hanging over Pearl’s head like a guillotine. The Brooks Global salary was a lifeline. She wasn't just here to work; she was here to survive. And she was absolutely not going to let an arrogant billionaire intimidate her out of a paycheck.

The heavy brushed-steel elevator doors hissed open.

Damien stepped out.

He was wearing a flawlessly tailored charcoal Italian suit that clung to his broad shoulders, his dark hair impeccably styled. But it wasn't his wealth that made people freeze—it was his aura. He radiated a cold, oppressive authority that made the air in the hallway feel instantly thinner. He didn't look left or right as he strode down the corridor, his long, deliberate steps echoing against the imported marble floors.

Most staff members would have bowed their heads, suddenly finding their shoes incredibly interesting, or retreated into the breakroom until the coast was clear.

Pearl stood her ground right outside his office door, clutching a digital tablet to her chest.

When he reached her, Damien paused. His tall frame towered over her. He slowly turned his head, and his piercing, stormy grey eyes locked onto hers. They were cold, calculating, and entirely unforgiving.

"Good morning, Mr. Brooks," Pearl said. Her voice was smooth, calm, and completely devoid of the trembling fear he was used to hearing. "Your schedule for the day is synced, and your coffee is served."

Damien stared at her for a long, quiet second. He wasn't accustomed to eyes that didn't dart away under his gaze. His jaw ticked, a barely noticeable movement, before he stepped past her into the sprawling office without uttering a single word.

Pearl followed him inside, stopping a respectful three paces behind his desk. The office was breathtaking—floor-to-ceiling windows offered a dizzying, panoramic view of the city skyline, the morning sun reflecting off the glass. But it felt more like a beautifully decorated cage.

Damien unbuttoned his suit jacket with one hand and reached out with the other, picking up the porcelain cup. He took a single, slow sip, his sharp jawline tightening. He set the cup back down on the saucer with a hard, deliberate *click* that echoed in the silent room.

"It’s lukewarm," Damien said coldly, his voice like cracking ice. "And you’re standing too close to my desk."

It was a test. Pearl knew it instantly. He was waiting for her to crack, to stutter, to apologize profusely like the others had.

She didn't break a sweat. She looked at the cup, then checked her silver wristwatch.

"The coffee was poured exactly five minutes ago to reach fifty-five degrees Celsius, which is chemically optimal for drinking without scalding your vocal cords," Pearl replied smoothly. She took precisely one step backward, her heels clicking against the floor. "And I am now three feet away. Should we review your 7:00 AM board briefing, or would you like to critique my spatial awareness further, Mr. Brooks?"

Damien’s eyes narrowed slightly. A subtle flicker of genuine shock crossed his harsh features. Nobody spoke to him like that. Ever.

He slowly leaned forward, planting his large hands on the edge of the mahogany desk. He brought himself into her personal space, casting a shadow over her. The scent of expensive cedarwood, bergamot, and pure, raw power wrapped around her senses.

"You have a lot of nerve for someone still on a thirty-day trial period, Miss Alex," he murmured, his voice dropping an octave, becoming low and incredibly dangerous.

"I have a high standard of competence, Mr. Brooks," Pearl met his gaze, refusing to let her knees shake, her dark eyes flashing with quiet fire. "That’s why you haven't replaced me yet."

A thick, heavy silence hung in the room. For a brief second, Pearl thought she saw the ghost of a smirk pull at the corner of his lips, a flash of something dangerously close to amusement. But it disappeared before she could be sure.

Before Damien could speak, the private red landline on his desk began to ring—a line reserved exclusively for board directors and catastrophic emergencies.

Damien tore his gaze from Pearl and snatched the receiver. "Talk."

Pearl watched his expression. The cool, controlled aura instantly hardened into pure steel. His knuckles turned stark white against the phone.

"How much?" Damien snapped into the receiver, his voice echoing off the glass walls. "Who leaked it?"

He listened for three agonizing seconds before slamming the phone down so hard the coffee cup rattled on its saucer.

"What happened, sir?" Pearl asked immediately, shelving their standoff and stepping into her professional role without hesitation.

"Someone just leaked a fabricated financial report claiming Brooks Global is facing a massive insolvency crisis," Damien said, his voice deadly quiet. "Trading opens in forty-five minutes. Our stocks are already dropping ten percent in pre-market trading. The board is in a full-blown panic. If we don't fix this by the opening bell, we lose two billion dollars in market cap."

Two billion dollars. The number made Pearl’s stomach drop.

Damien pressed a button on his desk control panel. The heavy glass doors of his office slid shut and locked with a firm, motorized click. A second later, the privacy blinds rapidly descended over the glass, sealing them off from the rest of the floor entirely.

Pearl’s heart gave a sudden, wild thud at the sound of the locking door, leaving them trapped in the sudden intimacy of the darkened office. She kept her face completely composed, though her pulse was now hammering against her ribs.

Damien stood up, stripping off his suit jacket and tossing it onto a leather chair. He walked around the desk until he was standing directly in front of her, so close she could feel the heat radiating from his chest.

"The mole is inside this building," Damien said, looking down at her with intense, burning focus. "Which means I can't trust a single executive out there. Cancel my entire day, Miss Alex."

"And what are we doing instead, Mr. Brooks?" Pearl asked, her breath hitching just slightly.

Damien’s eyes locked onto hers with terrifying resolve. "You and I are going to find the leak, save this company's stock, and destroy whoever tried to pull this off—before the opening bell rings. And if you survive the next forty-five minutes locked in here with me..."

He leaned in closer, his breath brushing the shell of her ear, sending an involuntary shiver down her spine. "...you might just become indispensable."

The Brooks Global private airstrip was bathed in the harsh, white glow of floodlights. Sitting on the tarmac like a sleek, silver bird of prey was a custom Gulfstream G650. Pearl stepped out of the black SUV, clutching her overnight bag. She had spent the last three hours frantically packing, arranging the Paris logistics, and aggressively repeating a single mantra in her head: You are the Chief Executive Assistant. You belong here. Do not look intimidated. She channeled every ounce of her professional composure as she walked up the airstairs. But the moment she stepped inside the cabin, her composure nearly shattered. It did not look like an airplane; it looked like a five-star luxury penthouse in the sky. The interior was lined with rich mahogany paneling, plush cream-colored leather seats, and ambient gold lighting. There was a full bar, a private bedroom suite in the back, and a large dining table. Damien was already onboard. He was sitting in one of the oversized leather capt

📖 Chapter 4: The Glass CageThe new desk was a masterpiece of modern Italian design, carved from a single slab of white marble with gleaming silver accents. It was beautiful. It was luxurious. And to Pearl Alex, it felt exactly like an interrogation chair. It was 6:45 AM on Thursday, her first official day as the Chief Executive Assistant of Brooks Global. True to his word, Damien had ordered maintenance to completely dismantle her small workstation in the hallway. Now, her immaculate new desk sat directly inside the penthouse office, positioned exactly fifteen feet away from Damien’s massive mahogany desk. Fifteen feet. It sounded like a reasonable distance in theory. In practice, it felt like fifteen inches. Pearl sat stiffly in her new ergonomic leather chair, booting up her dual monitors. The quiet hum of the computer tower was the only sound in the sprawling, soundproofed suite. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, the early morning sun cast long, golden shadows across the

  • His to protect: the CEO'S obsession    📖 chapter 3: The Executioner

The elevator ride down to the seventy-fifth floor was suffocatingly quiet. Pearl stood perfectly still, her hands clasped tightly around her digital tablet. Beside her, Damien was a coiled spring. The heat radiating off his large frame was palpable, but his face was carved from absolute ice. He didn't look like a CEO about to fire an employee; he looked like an executioner walking to the gallows. When the brushed-steel doors slid open, the bustling noise of the Acquisitions department instantly died. It was as if the oxygen had been vacuumed out of the room. Dozens of senior executives, junior analysts, and assistants froze in their tracks. Keyboards stopped clacking. Desk phones were slowly lowered to their receivers. The sight of the "Ice King" descending from his penthouse fortress unannounced meant only one thing: someone was about to be slaughtered. Damien didn't spare the terrified staff a single glance. He strode down the center aisle, his expensive Italian leather shoes ec

*Tick. Tick. Tick.*The digital clock on the wall of the locked penthouse office read 7:02 AM. In exactly thirty-eight minutes, the global markets would open, and Brooks Global Enterprises would lose billions. "Take my secondary laptop," Damien ordered, his voice sharp and commanding as he paced the length of the office. He pulled a sleek, silver laptop from a secure drawer and slid it across the mahogany desk toward her. "The firewall is bypassed. Get into the internal server logs."Pearl didn't hesitate. She dropped her digital tablet, pulled the laptop closer, and let her fingers fly across the keyboard. Damien had his phone pressed to his ear, his voice a low, lethal growl as he barked orders at his crisis management team. "I don't care if he’s asleep, wake the Head of Legal up! I want a gag order on the financial press by 7:15, or everyone is fired!" While Damien tore through his executives, Pearl entirely tuned out his yelling. She entered a state of absolute, hyper-focused f
