Scarlett's POV

"You are coming with me to the Congratulatory Party, right?" Mia asked on Sunday afternoon as we both tidied our space, preparing for the week ahead.

"Congratulatory party?" I asked, completely confused.

"Ugh, Lettie, you are so clueless. We won on Friday, remember?"

"There's usually a congratulatory party after every win, for the players and their fans, which is us!" she declared, placing her hands dramatically on her chest as she finished her sentence.

She had started calling me 'Lettie' since yesterday morning, claiming that 'Scarlett' was too long and didn't give off the right Roomie and Bestfriend vibe. I just let her. Telling Mia 'no' without a defense she can relate to is just a waste of time, and honestly, it's not like the nickname feels bad.

Sometimes I wonder if Mia is attending Ravenwood for the second time in a second lifetime, 'cause she knows way too much for a freshman.

I love Ravenwood, and it has always been my dream school, but I guess there are levels to these things, and Mia is on a way higher level.

"Oh," I said eventually, 'cause there was really nothing else to say.

"So you are coming."

"Yeah, I'd like to see what it's like."

"It's going to be great. Other athletes are going to be there, and I am definitely hooking up with someone. I need me a sports person."

"Isn't that too early?"

"No, it's not. Should I wait till I'm, like, a sophomore? I'll be an old lady by then," she responded, dropping the cloth she was folding onto the bed.

"And," she said, turning suddenly like she just remembered something else, "the best of them could have been taken by then, so the earlier the better."

I just nodded.

She continued talking while I just listened, until she eventually drifted off to sleep.

The quiet room allowed my mind to wander, and I drifted away into memories of my dad as I stared at the framed picture I kept beside my bed. I have been feeling nostalgic lately. I miss him. I miss how he would pack my hair in the weirdest ways, and I'd go to school with it like that, not allowing my mum to redo it. I miss the way he would dote on my mum and us, his children.

My dad always wanted an ordinary life, but life threw him on a path he didn't really desire. He planned to redirect it, and we eagerly anticipated that redirection. The plan was to gather enough funds, quit his job, and relocate all of us somewhere else, somewhere more quiet. But death is a bastard. It took him away early.

"It's almost time, let's start dressing up." Mia's voice drew me back from my thoughts. She was awake. I swung my head back to quickly blink away the tears that were coming.

---

We got to the party just when they were about to take the 'victory shot.' Mia said it was customary, everybody present takes the first shot, and then you can decide whether or not you take a second one.

"I don't drink," I said. The first time I drank was the last time I ever tried it. It messed me up real bad, and it was just a sip. I can't hold my liquor, and I have made peace with it.

"It's just one shot," Mia urged.

"Even a sip messes me up, so I'm not drinking."

"I'm here with you. I won't let you get hurt. Live, girl, live!"

"Okay," I said, and picked one shot glass from the passing tray. Stupid me!

They said the toast. It was led by the blue-eyed guy I saw that afternoon outside the window, and then we all drank.

Mia and I sat together, enjoying the vibe of the party, swaying slowly to the music. The alcohol was taking effect on me already.

A guy sat beside Mia and they both chatted away, flirting heavily before I even knew what was happening.

"Give me twenty minutes, I'll be back," she whispered in my ear, and then she left with the guy to God knows where!

Suddenly, I was alone. The loud noise of the party started to bother me, so I stood up to move away, struggling to keep my balance.

One step, two steps, three steps. I bumped into a wall! I reached out and felt the wall; it was warm. I looked up to see how tall it was. It had a head, and a nose, and...

No, it's not a wall. It's a man. I rubbed my eyes to try and see his face clearly. The noise of the party felt very far off now.

"Dad!" I called out.

"I thought I wouldn't see you again. I miss you, we miss you," I continued, my words slurring together.

"Evan is now this tall," I said, describing dramatically with my hands way above my head. I swayed dangerously, struggling to balance, and he reached out to hold me so I wouldn't fall.

"Where are you going? Who are you with?" the wall—sorry, man, oh, my dad—said to me.

"I'm tired, Daddy, I'm tired. Now I'm going against everything you said, but I promise it's just this once," I sobbed, bending down, the tears already falling freely.

He bent down with me, patting my shoulder. I saw his mouth move, but I couldn't hear anything over the rushing in my ears. I struggled to see him, and then, everything went black.

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 14:The Plus One

Scarlett's POVI didn't get a single message from Adrian until two days later.By the second afternoon, I was already starting to get worried, genuinely wondering if he had changed his mind or dropped the idea entirely. But my two-week deadline was already counting down. Every silent hour that passed was an hour wasted, pushing me closer to a deadline I couldn't afford to miss. Then, my phone buzzed with a message from his number.“Send a pretty picture of you.”I scoffed out loud at the screen. The arrogance of this guy was unreal. Rolling my eyes, I lazily scrolled through my gallery, picked a decent photo where I actually looked somewhat presentable, and sent it to him.Ten minutes passed without a reply. I sat on the edge of my bed, watching every minute tick by right before my eyes. Finally, a file arrived on my phone. It was a digital invitation card. “Ravenwood Athletics Annual Gala & Dinner.” The date on the invitation was three days from now.I immediately typed back: “What i

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 13: Silver lining

‎Scarlett's POV‎There was a lot of crucial information omitted from my target's profile. Who would have thought that a girl simply being seen around him would trigger a complete public disaster?‎‎And now, thanks to a second blog post, he actually thought I had set him up. His solution? He wanted us to play a couple.‎‎"I ...." I opened my mouth to protest before I could even form a proper defense in my head, but no words came out. The words died somewhere between my brain and my tongue, leaving only the dry taste of panic in my mouth. And then, right in the middle of my rising panic, it hit me.‎‎There was light at the end of every tunnel. The light at the end of this insane situation was that playing his girlfriend gave me direct, unquestioned access to my target. No more sneaking around perimeter fences. No more waiting for isolated moments.‎‎"Okay. I'll do it," I had accepted, swallowing my hesitation. The words scraped against my throat like sandpaper. He handed me his phone

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 12: Familiar Face

Blake's POVA girl walked in, completely interrupting our game.My thumbs paused on the controller, and my player on the screen immediately got checked into the boards by Marcus, but I barely noticed. I was too busy staring at the door. She looked familiar. There was something about the way she carried herself, something about her face that I recognized, but I just couldn't place her. I quickly tried to remember where I had seen her, maybe passing by on the quad, or at one of the recent team parties, but I came up completely empty. Then, Adrian spoke up. "You forget something?" he asked, sounding genuinely confused.I glanced at Adrian, surprised. First of all, he had actually paused the game, which he never did. But more importantly, I was surprised he knew her. Adrian was notorious for keeping his distance from the campus crowd. He would much rather push things to me or Marcus than deal with a girl directly. If a girl ever showed up at his door, he usually ignored it and told me to

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 11: Two Birds, One Stone

Adrian's POV‎Blake had called me late last night to ask where I was, but I kept the details brief. I just told him I had left the party early, and left it at that.‎‎After the girl walked out of my place this morning, I didn’t bother attending my early classes. Instead, I spent the morning bouncing between secure phone calls, giving directives to the soldiers overseeing our incoming shipments. Making sure the supplies crossed their respective checkpoints without raising red flags was my standard Monday morning routine. It was how I had operated since I first stepped foot at Ravenwood.‎‎Keeping the business running perfectly smooth was the only way to get my father off my back about my choice to attend college and play hockey. I had highly competent men on the ground, and they never gave me a reason to worry.‎‎That was my burden until I graduated, after which my father expected to hand the entire territory and its operations over to me. He wouldn’t stop talking about it, and the

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 10: Collateral Damage

Scarlett's POV "I'm not going to give in to them. That's not happening. I am going to class.""Lettie!" Mia called out. I ignored her and kept my pace brisk until she had to jog to catch up with me.We eventually parted ways; Mia headed toward her building, and I marched straight toward my lecture hall. The second I stepped through the double doors, every head in the room snapped toward me. I had anticipated the stares, so I kept my face entirely blank, walking down the aisle to find an empty seat. But just as I slid into a desk, a guy in the back row decided to read the blog headline out loud, his voice carrying perfectly over the pre-class chatter. The entire hall erupted in laughter."I didn't know the new scholarship girl was the hockey king's whore," a voice chimed in. It was Selena, the self-appointed celebrity of our class. She didn't even bother to look at me, keeping her eyes fixed on a compact mirror as she carefully touched up her lip gloss. "You slept your way to getting

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   CHAPTER 9 : Unwanted Attention

Scarlett's POVThe sunlight dragged me slowly into consciousness, but it was the shrill buzzing of my phone that truly woke me. I patted the mattress blindly, my eyes squeezed shut as I burrowed my face into the pillow. My head throbbed with the sluggish, heavy ache of someone being pulled out of a drunken stupor. When I finally located the phone, it stopped ringing, only to start up again a second later. I groaned and pressed it to my ear."Lettie, where are you? I’ve been worried sick since last night!" Mia’s voice shrieked through the speaker.I opened my mouth to mumble that I was in my room, but my eyes finally focused. I sat up. A few feet away stood the broad, muscular back of a guy in a white t-shirt and grey sweatpants.I rubbed my eyes, praying it was a hallucination. It wasn't."Fuck. Where the fuck am I?" I murmured, the phone slipping slightly from my grip. Then, it hit me. I recognized the sleek, minimalist furniture. I was in the exact same bedroom I had sneaked into ju
