Scarlett's POV

"I'm not going to give in to them. That's not happening. I am going to class."

"Lettie!" Mia called out. I ignored her and kept my pace brisk until she had to jog to catch up with me.

We eventually parted ways; Mia headed toward her building, and I marched straight toward my lecture hall.

The second I stepped through the double doors, every head in the room snapped toward me. I had anticipated the stares, so I kept my face entirely blank, walking down the aisle to find an empty seat. But just as I slid into a desk, a guy in the back row decided to read the blog headline out loud, his voice carrying perfectly over the pre-class chatter.

The entire hall erupted in laughter.

"I didn't know the new scholarship girl was the hockey king's whore," a voice chimed in. It was Selena, the self-appointed celebrity of our class. She didn't even bother to look at me, keeping her eyes fixed on a compact mirror as she carefully touched up her lip gloss. "You slept your way to getting the scholarship, right? Bedroom nepotism at its finest."

Another wave of cruel laughter echoed through the room.

'Wow. They work fast.' It hadn't even been an hour, and they had already dug up the fact that I was a scholarship student. It was terrifyingly easy for information to be weaponized in this place.

But this kind of situation wasn't exactly new to me. I used to be bullied relentlessly when I was younger, which was one of the reasons why my dad had taught me the defensive skills he did. He wanted me to be able to protect myself in a harsh world. Over the years, I had learned to handle verbal jabs with complete indifference. Let them talk. Words couldn't bruise. What I absolutely wouldn't tolerate, however, was anyone coming at me physically. For their sake, I really hoped nobody tried.

I didn't bother responding to Selena. There was nothing to say that wouldn't just add fuel to the fire.

The professor finally walked in, mercifully cutting the spectacle short. The lecture dragged on for an excruciating two hours and fifteen minutes.

When we were finally dismissed, I stood up to pack my bag. A group of girls deliberately shoved past my row, knocking their shoulders into mine so hard I had to quickly step back to keep from losing my balance. They wouldn't have cared in the slightest if they had knocked me to the floor.

I slung my backpack over my shoulder and stepped out of the hall, my sixth sense now fully activated. My skin prickled with hyper-awareness. I walked as fast as I could, desperate to just get behind the locked door of my dorm room. I had endured enough random, entitled people getting on my nerves for one morning.

But as I turned a sharp corner in the hallway, a girl suddenly jumped directly into my path. She purposely dropped her heavy textbook onto the linoleum with a loud *smack*.

"Watch where you're going!" she snapped, stepping into my personal space. "You made me drop my book."

"I didn't even touch you," I replied, my voice dangerously flat.

We exchanged heated words for a few seconds, her voice rising to draw the attention of the crowded hallway. Before I fully registered her shift in weight, she raised her hand and swung hard at my face.

My reflexes took over before conscious thought. I didn't flinch. I just shot my hand up and caught her wrist mid-air, mere inches from my cheek. My grip locked around her bones like a steel vice.

A collective gasp rippled through the onlookers.

The girl's eyes went wide with shock, her smug expression evaporating as she tried and failed to yank her arm back. I didn't let go immediately. We held each other's gaze, and I let the cold, dead stillness in my eyes communicate exactly what I was capable of if she pushed me any further.

Then, I dropped her wrist violently, shoving her arm back toward her chest.

That was too close, I thought to my already frustrated self, turning on my heel and walking away before my instincts took over and I actually blew my cover.

Someone needed to fix this. Or, at the very least, take the blame for it.

Adrian Whitlock.

He should have just left me alone on that curb when he knew that dragging me into his spotlight was going to be a massive problem for me. He had ruined my invisibility—the one thing I desperately needed to survive this university and complete my mission.

I knew it was foolish to seek out my target when I was supposed to be laying low. It went against every rule of survival my father had taught me.

But as I marched out of the academic building, my fists clenched at my sides, I realized I wanted to do it anyway.

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 14:The Plus One

Scarlett's POVI didn't get a single message from Adrian until two days later.By the second afternoon, I was already starting to get worried, genuinely wondering if he had changed his mind or dropped the idea entirely. But my two-week deadline was already counting down. Every silent hour that passed was an hour wasted, pushing me closer to a deadline I couldn't afford to miss. Then, my phone buzzed with a message from his number.“Send a pretty picture of you.”I scoffed out loud at the screen. The arrogance of this guy was unreal. Rolling my eyes, I lazily scrolled through my gallery, picked a decent photo where I actually looked somewhat presentable, and sent it to him.Ten minutes passed without a reply. I sat on the edge of my bed, watching every minute tick by right before my eyes. Finally, a file arrived on my phone. It was a digital invitation card. “Ravenwood Athletics Annual Gala & Dinner.” The date on the invitation was three days from now.I immediately typed back: “What i

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 13: Silver lining

‎Scarlett's POV‎There was a lot of crucial information omitted from my target's profile. Who would have thought that a girl simply being seen around him would trigger a complete public disaster?‎‎And now, thanks to a second blog post, he actually thought I had set him up. His solution? He wanted us to play a couple.‎‎"I ...." I opened my mouth to protest before I could even form a proper defense in my head, but no words came out. The words died somewhere between my brain and my tongue, leaving only the dry taste of panic in my mouth. And then, right in the middle of my rising panic, it hit me.‎‎There was light at the end of every tunnel. The light at the end of this insane situation was that playing his girlfriend gave me direct, unquestioned access to my target. No more sneaking around perimeter fences. No more waiting for isolated moments.‎‎"Okay. I'll do it," I had accepted, swallowing my hesitation. The words scraped against my throat like sandpaper. He handed me his phone

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 12: Familiar Face

Blake's POVA girl walked in, completely interrupting our game.My thumbs paused on the controller, and my player on the screen immediately got checked into the boards by Marcus, but I barely noticed. I was too busy staring at the door. She looked familiar. There was something about the way she carried herself, something about her face that I recognized, but I just couldn't place her. I quickly tried to remember where I had seen her, maybe passing by on the quad, or at one of the recent team parties, but I came up completely empty. Then, Adrian spoke up. "You forget something?" he asked, sounding genuinely confused.I glanced at Adrian, surprised. First of all, he had actually paused the game, which he never did. But more importantly, I was surprised he knew her. Adrian was notorious for keeping his distance from the campus crowd. He would much rather push things to me or Marcus than deal with a girl directly. If a girl ever showed up at his door, he usually ignored it and told me to

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 11: Two Birds, One Stone

Adrian's POV‎Blake had called me late last night to ask where I was, but I kept the details brief. I just told him I had left the party early, and left it at that.‎‎After the girl walked out of my place this morning, I didn’t bother attending my early classes. Instead, I spent the morning bouncing between secure phone calls, giving directives to the soldiers overseeing our incoming shipments. Making sure the supplies crossed their respective checkpoints without raising red flags was my standard Monday morning routine. It was how I had operated since I first stepped foot at Ravenwood.‎‎Keeping the business running perfectly smooth was the only way to get my father off my back about my choice to attend college and play hockey. I had highly competent men on the ground, and they never gave me a reason to worry.‎‎That was my burden until I graduated, after which my father expected to hand the entire territory and its operations over to me. He wouldn’t stop talking about it, and the

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   CHAPTER 9 : Unwanted Attention

Scarlett's POVThe sunlight dragged me slowly into consciousness, but it was the shrill buzzing of my phone that truly woke me. I patted the mattress blindly, my eyes squeezed shut as I burrowed my face into the pillow. My head throbbed with the sluggish, heavy ache of someone being pulled out of a drunken stupor. When I finally located the phone, it stopped ringing, only to start up again a second later. I groaned and pressed it to my ear."Lettie, where are you? I’ve been worried sick since last night!" Mia’s voice shrieked through the speaker.I opened my mouth to mumble that I was in my room, but my eyes finally focused. I sat up. A few feet away stood the broad, muscular back of a guy in a white t-shirt and grey sweatpants.I rubbed my eyes, praying it was a hallucination. It wasn't."Fuck. Where the fuck am I?" I murmured, the phone slipping slightly from my grip. Then, it hit me. I recognized the sleek, minimalist furniture. I was in the exact same bedroom I had sneaked into ju
