Adrian's POV

The outdoor party was loud, the crisp night air thick with the smell of cheap beer and raw adrenaline. Winning on Friday had set the campus on fire, and tonight's celebration had spilled out across a massive open yard. The heavy bass from the speakers vibrated through the grass, a stark contrast to the quiet, calculated way I usually have to navigate my life.

Blake had led the congratulatory shot toast, soaking in the cheers of the crowd. But right after, Abel stepped into my space, his jaw tight.

"You're always playing favorites, Whitlock," Abel sneered, keeping his voice low. "He led the shot again."

Abel had said I was being partial with who led the shot and everything, and that I have always been biased whenever it has to do with Blake.

I was pissed 'cause that's not exactly true.

"You think we don't see it?" Abel continued, his tone turning venomous. "You treat this roster like it's your personal kingdom, and Blake gets to do whatever he wants while the rest of us just fall in line."

I stared at him, my posture rigid. Underneath the college athlete act, every instinct I possessed roared to the surface. In my world, open disrespect like this is met with immediate, brutal violence. My fists clenched at my sides, my knuckles aching with the urge to break his jaw right then and there.

I struggled to stay calm, fighting back the dark impulse to tear him apart. It wasn't worth blowing my cover over a petty hockey argument. But more than that, I knew my own strength—if I laid a hand on him, I wouldn't just give him a black eye. I would end up severely incapacitating my own teammate. I couldn't afford to take on the tag of the captain who put his own player in the hospital, because I couldn't trust myself to stop once I started. So, I forced my lethal instincts down and decided to just step away.

"Watch your mouth, Abel," I warned, my tone dropping into a cold, dead calm that immediately made him hesitate. "No one is playing favorites. If you want the spotlight, skate faster. Don't come crying to me at a party."

I didn't wait for his reply. I turned on my heel and walked away to a quiet spot near the edge of the trees, leaving the noise of the party behind.

I let the breeze of the night blow through me, cooling the anger tight in my chest. I just stared at the cigarette I was holding in my right hand, and was igniting my lighter in the other hand.

The small orange flame flickered in the dark, casting a faint glow over the unlit paper. I stopped smoking last year after I got sick, and my mom said I was getting addicted to smoking and made me promise to stop 'cause she wasn't ready to lose her son even though it was completely unrelated and I was lying on that hospital bed cause of exhaustion. Since then, I resorted to just staring at the stick. The quiet ritual was enough to steady my nerves, and eventually, I threw it away into the damp grass and pocketed my lighter.

I turned to return back to the party, and this lady just bumped into me.

She hit my chest hard, grabbing my jacket to steady herself. Then she touched me, looked up at me with wide, glassy eyes, and called me 'Dad'.

Wait, did I look that old that she called me Dad?

Then I saw her sway dangerously on her feet and realized she was drunk. Completely out of it.

"Dad!" she called out again, tears spilling over her cheeks. "I thought I wouldn't see you again. I miss you, we miss you."

She lifted her hands dramatically above her head. "Evan is now this tall."

The sudden movement threw off her balance, and she stumbled hard. I reached out and caught her waist so she wouldn't fall.

"Where are you going? Who are you with?" I asked her, trying to keep her upright.

But she just kept talking about how she misses her dad. "I'm tired, Daddy, I'm tired. Now I'm going against everything you said, but I promise it's just this once."

She bent down, crying heavily. I bent with her, patting her shoulder. I listened for a while and tried to help take her back since I didn't know who she was with.

"Where do you stay?" I asked her.

Then she stared up at me for a long, quiet second, and then her eyes went shut.

Her entire body went completely limp against me.

I just picked her up, easily scooping her into my arms. I walked back toward the crowd and asked a few persons, but no one could identify her. Whoever she came with had clearly abandoned her.

I was already tired of the party anyway, and Abel had ruined my mood. I couldn't leave her lying on the cold ground, so I carried her down the street to where my car was parked. I unlocked the door, placed her carefully into the passenger seat, and buckled her seatbelt across her chest before slipping into the driver's seat.

As I started the engine and pulled out into the quiet, dark streets leading toward my house, I kept glancing over at her sleeping figure.

I anticipated her phone would ring. I fully expected a frantic roommate or a friend to start calling her so I could pick up, explain the situation, get her dorm address, and drop her off safely without having to bring a complete stranger into my private space.

I drove slowly, waiting for the buzz or the chime of her phone in her pocket. But it didn't ring. The passenger side remained entirely silent, her breathing soft and steady against the window.

When she wakes up, she finds her way.

Just as I turned onto the long, dark road leading toward my estate, the heavy silence inside the car was shattered. The dashboard screen lit up in bright blue light, and the speakers blared as a call came through.

It wasn't her phone.

It was mine.

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 14:The Plus One

Scarlett's POVI didn't get a single message from Adrian until two days later.By the second afternoon, I was already starting to get worried, genuinely wondering if he had changed his mind or dropped the idea entirely. But my two-week deadline was already counting down. Every silent hour that passed was an hour wasted, pushing me closer to a deadline I couldn't afford to miss. Then, my phone buzzed with a message from his number.“Send a pretty picture of you.”I scoffed out loud at the screen. The arrogance of this guy was unreal. Rolling my eyes, I lazily scrolled through my gallery, picked a decent photo where I actually looked somewhat presentable, and sent it to him.Ten minutes passed without a reply. I sat on the edge of my bed, watching every minute tick by right before my eyes. Finally, a file arrived on my phone. It was a digital invitation card. “Ravenwood Athletics Annual Gala & Dinner.” The date on the invitation was three days from now.I immediately typed back: “What i

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 13: Silver lining

‎Scarlett's POV‎There was a lot of crucial information omitted from my target's profile. Who would have thought that a girl simply being seen around him would trigger a complete public disaster?‎‎And now, thanks to a second blog post, he actually thought I had set him up. His solution? He wanted us to play a couple.‎‎"I ...." I opened my mouth to protest before I could even form a proper defense in my head, but no words came out. The words died somewhere between my brain and my tongue, leaving only the dry taste of panic in my mouth. And then, right in the middle of my rising panic, it hit me.‎‎There was light at the end of every tunnel. The light at the end of this insane situation was that playing his girlfriend gave me direct, unquestioned access to my target. No more sneaking around perimeter fences. No more waiting for isolated moments.‎‎"Okay. I'll do it," I had accepted, swallowing my hesitation. The words scraped against my throat like sandpaper. He handed me his phone

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 12: Familiar Face

Blake's POVA girl walked in, completely interrupting our game.My thumbs paused on the controller, and my player on the screen immediately got checked into the boards by Marcus, but I barely noticed. I was too busy staring at the door. She looked familiar. There was something about the way she carried herself, something about her face that I recognized, but I just couldn't place her. I quickly tried to remember where I had seen her, maybe passing by on the quad, or at one of the recent team parties, but I came up completely empty. Then, Adrian spoke up. "You forget something?" he asked, sounding genuinely confused.I glanced at Adrian, surprised. First of all, he had actually paused the game, which he never did. But more importantly, I was surprised he knew her. Adrian was notorious for keeping his distance from the campus crowd. He would much rather push things to me or Marcus than deal with a girl directly. If a girl ever showed up at his door, he usually ignored it and told me to

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 11: Two Birds, One Stone

Adrian's POV‎Blake had called me late last night to ask where I was, but I kept the details brief. I just told him I had left the party early, and left it at that.‎‎After the girl walked out of my place this morning, I didn’t bother attending my early classes. Instead, I spent the morning bouncing between secure phone calls, giving directives to the soldiers overseeing our incoming shipments. Making sure the supplies crossed their respective checkpoints without raising red flags was my standard Monday morning routine. It was how I had operated since I first stepped foot at Ravenwood.‎‎Keeping the business running perfectly smooth was the only way to get my father off my back about my choice to attend college and play hockey. I had highly competent men on the ground, and they never gave me a reason to worry.‎‎That was my burden until I graduated, after which my father expected to hand the entire territory and its operations over to me. He wouldn’t stop talking about it, and the

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   Chapter 10: Collateral Damage

Scarlett's POV "I'm not going to give in to them. That's not happening. I am going to class.""Lettie!" Mia called out. I ignored her and kept my pace brisk until she had to jog to catch up with me.We eventually parted ways; Mia headed toward her building, and I marched straight toward my lecture hall. The second I stepped through the double doors, every head in the room snapped toward me. I had anticipated the stares, so I kept my face entirely blank, walking down the aisle to find an empty seat. But just as I slid into a desk, a guy in the back row decided to read the blog headline out loud, his voice carrying perfectly over the pre-class chatter. The entire hall erupted in laughter."I didn't know the new scholarship girl was the hockey king's whore," a voice chimed in. It was Selena, the self-appointed celebrity of our class. She didn't even bother to look at me, keeping her eyes fixed on a compact mirror as she carefully touched up her lip gloss. "You slept your way to getting

  • Hockey Captain's Ruin   CHAPTER 9 : Unwanted Attention

Scarlett's POVThe sunlight dragged me slowly into consciousness, but it was the shrill buzzing of my phone that truly woke me. I patted the mattress blindly, my eyes squeezed shut as I burrowed my face into the pillow. My head throbbed with the sluggish, heavy ache of someone being pulled out of a drunken stupor. When I finally located the phone, it stopped ringing, only to start up again a second later. I groaned and pressed it to my ear."Lettie, where are you? I’ve been worried sick since last night!" Mia’s voice shrieked through the speaker.I opened my mouth to mumble that I was in my room, but my eyes finally focused. I sat up. A few feet away stood the broad, muscular back of a guy in a white t-shirt and grey sweatpants.I rubbed my eyes, praying it was a hallucination. It wasn't."Fuck. Where the fuck am I?" I murmured, the phone slipping slightly from my grip. Then, it hit me. I recognized the sleek, minimalist furniture. I was in the exact same bedroom I had sneaked into ju
