Chapter 3

Author: Crystal K
I picked up the torn halves of the document and pieced them back together.

"Thirteen witnesses," I said with a small laugh. "All of them Yolia's people. What a coincidence."

"Christine, that's a hurtful thing to say," Yolia said softly, a flicker of triumph in her eyes. "I know you were scared tonight, but you shouldn't take it out on innocent people."

She stood and glided toward me gracefully.

"We were all so worried about you," she said, reaching out to touch my face. "You're hurt, let me get you some medicine..."

"Don't touch me."

As the words left my mouth, a powerful aura erupted from within me.

It was pure, ancient, and filled with a raw, primal force.

Yolia’s face went white, and she stumbled back, her body trembling with a fear she couldn't hide.

Everyone in the room froze.

Leo’s jaw dropped, his eyes wide with disbelief as he stared at me.

A flash of shock crossed Jaxon's eyes, followed by something far more complex.

And Ridley… his face turned to stone.

"Impossible," he hissed, his eyes widening in disbelief. "Someone like you could never possess a bloodline that strong."

"Why not?" I tilted my head. "Because it challenges your authority?"

"What do you think you are?" Ridley's voice trembled with rage. "You? From some minor bloodline? Worthy of real power?"

I smiled.

"You're afraid."

"Afraid?" Ridley laughed, a bitter, angry sound. "Christine, do you really think a pathetic little flicker of an aura can change your place here?"

He stalked toward me, murder in every step.

"You will always be nothing more than an accessory to me. Without me, you are nothing."

"Am I?" I met his gaze. "Then why are you so angry?"

Ridley stopped in front of me, his large frame casting a shadow over me.

"Because you disgust me," he snarled, his voice a low growl. "A lowly female daring to challenge her Alpha."

"Lowly?" I lifted my chin. "Does the coward who threw his own mate to the wolves have the right to call anyone else lowly?"

"You're asking for it!"

Ridley’s hand shot out and clamped around my neck.

His strength was immense, lifting my feet off the ground.

His eyes were pure gold, his wolf completely in control.

"I should have snapped your neck the day you first stepped into this pack house, you bitch!" he roared.

Oxygen was cut off. My lungs burned.

Darkness crept into the edges of my vision.

But I felt no fear.

Instead, I smiled.

Facing suffocation and death, I gave him a smile of pure, contemptuous satisfaction.

"What are you smiling at?" Ridley's voice was distorted with fury. "What the hell do you think you're smiling at?"

Using the last of my air, I mouthed a single word, my lips forming a silent: "Thanks."

Thank you for showing me the truth.

Thank you for killing me with your own hands.

Thank you for being the stepping stone to my new life.

Seeing my expression, Ridley’s eyes widened in horror as realization dawned.

But it was too late.

A fist slammed into his temple.

"Let her go!" Jaxon roared, tackling Ridley away from me.

I crumpled to the floor, gasping for air.

Ridley stumbled back, staring at his brother in disbelief.

"Jaxon! You hit me?"

"You were trying to kill her!" Jaxon stood in front of me, a human shield. "Are you insane? She's your mate!"

"She doesn't deserve it!" Ridley bellowed. "That bitch doesn't deserve to be my mate!"

Leo burst into tears.

He ran to Yolia and clung to her.

"Auntie Yolia, I'm scared!" he sobbed, glaring back at me with pure hatred on his little face. "You're a bad mama! It's all your fault!"

Yolia hugged Leo, her eyes shining with victory.

"Don't be scared, sweetie," she cooed, stroking his hair. "Auntie will protect you."

I used the wall to pull myself up.

The bruises from Ridley's fingers were already darkening on my neck.

"Christine, are you okay?" Jaxon asked, his voice full of concern.

"Fine," I rasped. "I'm tired. I'm going to my room."

I turned and walked toward the stairs.

"Christine!" Ridley yelled after me. "This isn't over!"

"No, it isn't," I said without looking back. "But it's not going to end the way you think."

I walked up the stairs, each step heavy.

The sounds of their argument followed me.

"You hit me for that woman!" Ridley's enraged shout.

"She is your Luna!" Jaxon's retort.

"She's nothing!"

"Ridley, get a grip..."

"Get out! I don't want to see you again!"

Leo's small voice cut through the tension. "Daddy, stop fighting with Uncle Jaxon. It's all the bad mama's fault."

I pushed open my bedroom door and shut it, blocking out the noise from downstairs.

The room was quiet.

Only the sound of my own heavy breathing filled the space.

I walked to my vanity and opened the jewelry box.

It was filled with expensive pieces Ridley had given me when we were first mated.

Back when he still pretended to love me.

I picked up a silver brooch.

It was shaped like a crescent moon. Delicate.

And very sharp.

I clutched it and walked to the bathroom.

Turning on the faucet, I let the hot water run.

I sat on the edge of the tub and held the silver pin up to the light.

The sharp point glinted.

Taking a deep breath, I aimed the tip at my wrist.

Are you happy now, you son of a bitch?"Ridley saw my lifeless face and froze. He reached out a trembling hand, as if to check for a breath.Cold.No heartbeat. No breath.Truly dead."No… impossible…" Ri

They took me to the edge of the sea cliffs, where the waves churned over sharp rocks below.Yolia was standing there, dressed in a long white gown, looking like an angel in the moonlight."Christine," she turned gracefully. "You look terrible."I did. I was rail-thin, pale as a ghost, and couldn't even stand on my own."What do you want?" I asked as they held me in front of her."To finally resolve our little... situation," Yolia said, her smile as sharp as her tone. "It's been three long years, Christine. And frankly, I'm tired of watching you play the role of Luna."She walked up to me and slapped me across the face.Smack! My head snapped to the side, and blood trickled from my lip."That was for humiliating me at the pack house."Another slap."That was for almost exposing my plan."A third slap."And that was for getting Marcus executed."I didn't resist. It would all be over soon anyway."Aren't you going to beg?" Yolia stopped. "Aren't you going to cry? To get on your knees and

Ridley’s face turned to stone when he saw my gesture."Christine…""Do you really think an apology will fix this?" I struggled to sit up, my voice weak but laced with venom. "Ridley, are you living in a fantasy world?""I know I was wrong, but…""But what?" I sneered. "But you still won't let me go? But you still can't bear to part with your power?"Ridley’s hands clenched into fists."Christine, I am sincere about starting over.""Starting over?" My laugh was as sharp as a blade. "Starting over with a woman you never loved in the first place?""I love you!" he roared. "You're my mate!""No," I looked him dead in the eye. "You love the position of Luna. You love the stability I bring you. You have never loved Christine.""That's not true…""It is," I cut him off. "You know, Ridley? Yolia and I are actually very similar."Ridley stared, confused."We're both actresses," I continued. "She plays the part of the gentle, kind princess, and I played the part of the perfect, loving Luna.""Wh

Leo didn’t leave. He put the soup on the nightstand, then sat in a corner of the room, quietly playing with his toy car."I told you to get out.""I know," Leo wouldn't look at me. "But Daddy said I have to stay with you.""You do whatever your daddy says?""No." Leo finally looked up, his eyes glistening with tears. "Mama, I'm scared.""Scared of what?""Scared you'll… you'll use the knife again," his voice trembled. "There was so much blood."I closed my eyes."Mama, Daddy found the bad guys," Leo whispered. "The wolves who attacked us."I opened my eyes."What did he say?""Daddy said a wolf named Marcus leaked the information," Leo continued to roll his car back and forth. "He's been locked up."Marcus? I knew him. He was one of Yolia’s many admirers.A perfect scapegoat."Anything else?""Daddy says he's sorry," Leo glanced at me shyly. "He's been getting you presents every day."The next day, a gift arrived. A diamond necklace worth a million dollars. The day after, a set of anti

Another failure. The smell of antiseptic. This was the last day. My last chance. The same white ceiling greeted me.I opened my eyes. Thick bandages were wrapped around my neck. But this wasn't the infirmary.I tried to sit up but found my body strangely weak.No.Not weak.Suppressed.I looked closely at the walls and saw, beneath the white paint, the faint glint of a silver grid.A silver mesh. The entire room was lined with silver."You're awake."Ridley's voice came from the doorway. He walked in, carrying a bowl of soup."You locked me in here?" my voice was a raw whisper."For your own protection," Ridley said, his voice laced with false concern as he placed the soup on the nightstand. "Christine, you're not well. You're ill.""I'm not sick.""You are," Ridley sat on the edge of the bed, his eyes filled with pain. "It's a textbook case of Luna's Madness. A severe psychological affliction that can strike a Luna when her mating bond is fractured."Luna's Madness?I'd heard of it. W

Ridley’s expression changed in an instant.Without another glance at me, he bolted from the room."Yolia!" his voice was filled with panic. "What's wrong? What happened?"I heard him scoop her up, followed by the sound of frantic footsteps."Get the doctor! Now!""Yolia, wake up!""Damn it, why did she suddenly collapse?"The sounds faded into the distance.I stood in the infirmary, staring at the overturned chairs and the blood on the floor.Leo hadn't followed his father. He stood in the doorway, his small face twisted with anger and hatred."This is all your fault!" he pointed at me. "You upset Auntie Yolia!"I turned to look at my son.An eight-year-old boy who should have been innocent. But his eyes held nothing but disgust for his mother."Leo, Yolia's condition has nothing to do with me.""Yes, it does!" Leo marched into the room, his little fists clenched. "Daddy said you're a bad woman! Uncle Jaxon said you're awful, too!""Is that so?" I knelt to meet his gaze. "And what do y
