Chapter 4

Author: Mohini
Harry's POV

Silence stretched between us for several seconds.

A flicker of panic crossed Giselle's face. "Harry, don't get the wrong idea. Steven's place is too far from his workplace, so I bought him a condo closer to work."

She said it as if there were nothing unusual about it. But half the money she'd used to buy that condo had come from my hard-earned savings!

Trembling with anger, I shoved past her and stepped inside.

What I saw sent a chill through my entire body. Everything was in pairs, and all of it had clearly been used. The place looked like the home of a couple who'd been living together for years.

So all those nights she had claimed she was working late at the office, she'd actually been here with Steven.

I looked up and saw him coming down the stairs, wearing my custom-made wedding suit. When he spotted me, a smug smile spread across his face.

That suit meant everything to me. It was made from the silk and gemstones in my dad's wedding suit. Every time I tried it on, I felt as though he were still by my side, watching over me as I prepared to start a happy marriage of my own.

"Take it off!" I roared.

Steven's eyes immediately welled with tears.

Giselle grabbed my arm and yanked me aside, her face twisted with anger. "Steven was just trying to help. He tried on your wedding suit so it could be altered for a perfect fit. Why are you yelling like that?"

The suit had been altered to the point where I could hardly recognize it. I couldn't stop trembling. "You know how much that suit means to me!"

Giselle fell silent, unable to respond.

Steven seemed to collect himself and continued down the stairs, apparently hoping to calm us both down.

But as soon as he reached the bottom, he stumbled toward a table where a scented candle was burning. The table rocked as he grabbed at it to steady himself, knocking the candle over.

The flame caught the sleeve of his suit jacket.

"Ah!" Steven screamed as the fire spread.

He frantically tried to shrug off the burning jacket as I rushed over to help him.

I grabbed the jacket and tried to pull it off him, but the flames caught my sleeves. A searing pain shot through my skin. I screamed and desperately tried to smother the flames, but they kept spreading.

Steven finally managed to slip out of the jacket, which fell onto the rug, setting it ablaze.

Yet the woman who had once promised to protect me for the rest of my life rushed straight toward Steven. "Are you burned?"

Steven shook his head, his eyes red and brimming with tears. "I'm fine. I don't know why Harry tripped me. If I hadn't fallen, none of this would've happened. It's such a shame about the suit—"

"How can you still be worrying about the suit at a time like this?" Giselle said gently to him, then shot me a furious glare.

Without another thought, she helped Steven out of the condo, leaving me behind.

The fire raged around me as thick smoke filled the room. Through the crackling flames, I heard Steven shout, "Harry's still inside!"

"Forget about him now! Don't you realize you're hurt? He can get out on his own!" Giselle shouted back.

The smoke grew thicker. I coughed until my chest burned, and every movement sent fresh waves of pain through my burned skin. But nothing hurt more than watching Giselle disappear into the distance without looking back even once.

Tears slipped down my cheeks. The woman who had once pulled me out of hell had dragged me right back into it.

I staggered out through the smoke, clutching my burned arms.

Just then, a notification appeared on my phone, reminding me that my flight was about to depart.

A moment later, another message came through from our wedding planner, asking me to confirm the arrangements. Without hesitation, I tapped "Confirm".

If Giselle and Steven wanted the wedding I'd spent so much time planning, they could have it.

...

Third-Person POV

Giselle rushed Steven to the hospital and stayed by his side, comforting him while the doctors treated his burns and bandaged his wounds.

Only after the doctors assured her that he was out of danger did she finally relax and look around.

However, Harry was nowhere to be seen. Her heart skipped a beat. She'd assumed he would follow them to the hospital.

She hurried back to the condo as fast as she could. But the moment she stepped inside, she realized something was wrong.

Harry's POVEverything around us seemed to go still for a moment. I ignored Giselle and walked away. She quietly followed behind me, just as she used to when she walked me home. But I no longer felt the excitement I once had. Some time later, we successfully wrapped up the new project. My coworkers kept pestering me to treat everyone to dinner, so we headed to a restaurant to celebrate. The private dining room was filled with lively chatter as everyone drank and toasted one another. Caught up in the mood, I had a few more drinks.Halfway through the meal, I excused myself to clear my head and went to the front desk to pay the bill.Just as I pulled out my wallet, a credit card was slid across the counter. I looked up to find Giselle."Use mine," she said.I insisted on paying with my own card. "No need."After I signed the receipt, Giselle grabbed my arm. "You used to let me pay all the time. Why not now? Are you really going to cut me out of your life completely?"The alcoho

Harry's POVWhen Giselle called me from a different number, I was at my desk, going through some paperwork."Harry, what the hell is this supposed to mean? You had Steven step in as the groom at our wedding?"I continued working on the documents while her shouting echoed through the speaker."Aren't you two so in love with each other? Since the venue and everything were already paid for, I figured I might as well let you two have it. Consider it a parting gift," I sneered, my voice completely flat. There was a long silence on the other end of the line. All I could hear was Giselle's angry, ragged breathing."Harry, are you ever going to drop this?" she snapped. "How many times do I have to explain it? There's nothing going on between Steven and me. We're just close friends. How long are you going to keep holding this against me?"I set down my pen and tried to stay calm. "I'm not holding anything against you. Giselle, we've already broken up. Don't get the wrong idea.""What?"

Third-Person POVOver the next week, Giselle kept checking her phone, waiting for a message from Harry.Steven moved in under the pretense of keeping her company. He slept in every day and constantly ordered her around."Giselle, can you pick up some brunch for me? I want that cinnamon oatmeal. Also, run me a bath. I want to soak for a while. Are you listening?"Giselle finally lost her temper. "Can't you do any of that yourself? I agreed to let you move in because you were supposed to keep me company while I waited for Harry, not act like you own the place!"Steven's expression crumpled. "I thought you were okay with it. I didn't know you'd get so upset."Giselle froze. The truth was, Steven had always been like this. In the past, she'd found his helplessness endearing and felt the urge to protect him. Harry, by contrast, had always been considerate and self-reliant. He looked after her so well.Without saying another word, she went to the cafe. "Hi, could I get a bowl of cinn

Third-Person POV"Harry!" Giselle shouted. The wedding suit jacket was still smoldering, sending up thick black smoke. The furniture nearby was charred, too. But there was no sign of Harry. She searched the condo over and over, then finally called him in desperation. But all she got in response was the same cold, automated message. "The number you have dialed is currently unavailable. Please try again later."She couldn't understand why Harry wasn't picking up or why he hadn't followed them out. A growing sense of unease settled over her. She was about to rush outside to look for him when she noticed the blood around the smoldering jacket. His personal things were scattered across the floor, too.Only then did she realize how badly he'd been injured in the fire. Her heart clenched. "Why didn't he say anything?"Her panic kept mounting, and she stumbled out of the condo.Steven walked up to her. "How's Harry? Is he still mad at us? I don't know what's gotten into him lately. H

Harry's POVGiselle froze for a moment, disbelief written all over her face. Then she let out a cold laugh."I had no idea you were into playing mind games now. Harry, you're not a teenager anymore, and we're getting married soon. Are you really going to keep acting like a child?"She paused, then added, "Steven is sensitive. You can say whatever you want to me, but leave him out of it. I'll pretend you never said that."I almost asked her why she was always so quick to defend Steven when I was her fiance. But I held my tongue.Thinking she'd smoothed things over, Giselle softened her tone a little. "I have some work to take care of at the office. Get some sleep."She didn't come home that night.Steven posted a video on his social media that was visible only to me.In the video, he showed off his toned back and muscular build, striking an almost suggestive pose. Then Giselle stepped into the frame."Like this." Her fingers lightly brushed against his skin as she adjusted his
