I willed it into existence. I was finally back on that balcony facing toward the castle. The sky filled with those stars and next to me, that husk of shadows was looking up at them.

“I was worried.” He spoke low refusing to look my way.

“Still looking for me?” I leaned back, resting my arms on the ledge.

“Every single day.” his head sank with a defeat that was as somber as his words. He sounded defeated.

“What’s wrong?” I reached out to touch him but he shrank away. “I’m here now.”

He nodded, “You’ll be gone again before sunrise.”

“So let’s have fun now.” I twirled my fingers through my hair playfully but honestly, I was losing sight of how to flirt. It had been two years since needing to tap into those skills and they were getting rusty. I hoped I could be forgiven for the awkwardness but the air was still clinging to that heavy loss.

“Why can’t we find you?” He finally turned to me. “Y

Both of my parents came, I hadn’t wanted my father to but I wasn’t about to let that spoil seeing my mother. I hugged her so tightly that she almost felt faint. I didn’t care. We were thick as thieves when my father was away and all these memories suddenly were flashing through my mind. She was always there, she knew everything and now when I wanted to share this one important thing my mouth as sealed shut. Our special connection was never going to be replaced. I kept telling myself that I was creating a better world for her. This world was going to be better and future generations wouldn’t need to fight at all. “Honestly,” she laughed, “We haven’t seen you in a very long time and your letters are hardly enough. How is everything going?” “Hopefully you’re showing your true talents.” My father boomed, he always did want to make sure I was reaching for the head of the pack. “Everything is going so well, thank you for coming. One more year passed by and I felt like it was moving on without me. Doctor Friese was more concerned with finding out if I had any changes from being so close to the barrier but of course I answered in just the same way as always. “Nothing new to report.” She nodded, “Well, we are entering the final stages before the procedure takes place. I think after all this time I am ready to provide you my assessment.” “Is it something I want to hear?” Again she nodded and slipped through her notebook, “When you first started, you had been assessed as a noble blooded fae. Unfortunately, without having any powers manifest this close to the barrier, I am doubtful of that finding.” “Do you think I wouldn’t change?” She shook her head, “May still change, but would be minor changes. If anything, I think you’ll appear more human-like. You’d be a lesser blood of course.” “Does this mean all the extra noble blood classes and training I went through were for nothing?” “Oh absolutely not.” She la

It had been another year, on schedule I was back to that white balcony. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do this time. Maybe try a bit harder to get a clearer picture of this guy. Of course last year he got two visits from me so maybe him not being here was justice. I looked around and didn’t see him but I walked through the door hoping he’d be in the darkness of the room. I looked over and noticed the bed was different. Now it looked just plain the hanging flowers were gone and there was no canopy anymore. The room was more like a hunting lodge rather than a fairy tale. I rolled my eyes, thinking this was some subconscious way I was trying to tell myself the fairy tales were over. There was a fire roaring in the fireplace and when I looked outside again, I saw there was a light dusting of snow. I had missed it before with trying to find this shadow figure again. Now I just wanted to take in my surroundings. My feet carried me back to the balcony as I looked up in the sky. There

The magical Fae, gifted with the most stunning magicks and power over the world that could strike fear into the heart of any creature they crossed. Their natural beauty stunned the world and shook it with terror as they built their kingdom around the seasons, ruled by emotions, able to conquer whatever challenge may come. It was unnatural that they existed, at least to us. Their lives could span thousands of years, and each century they seemed to grow even more terrifying and awe-inspiring. Humans were inherently lesser, but we had one advantage. Our minds had to develop better. We had the power of progression. The fae held back in their ways never changed. They could leave for a millennium and return as if no time had passed. Meanwhile, humans, we learned and evolved beyond their comprehension. With our minds set on industry and prosperity, we became a threat to their very existence. We built up our cities into vast bustling metropolises inventing ways of travel far beyond horsebac

When I got home I threw my backpack down and immediately hopped to the kitchen digging out a bag of chips before planting my ass on the couch. There I was determined to stay for the remainder of my evening. It was the last week of school, no one wanted to assign homework and even fewer of my classmates were going to do it. Reaching into my pocket I took out my phone and tapped away the call out to my friends.“Okay, who has any news to share?”We were all still waiting to hear each other’s plans after graduation. My best friend Laurel already had been accepted into a great college so her continuing education had been the talk of the group last week. Certainly someone this week had more news.“Francis got a notice during the last bell.” Laurel chimed back. She shared that class with him and we all knew what a notice meant.Any boy between the ages of 18 and 29 could be called up for service at the border. It was meant to be an honor. You’d get your orders to serve five years, and then

I woke up in Rodrik’s arms in my bedroom the smell of warm chocolate muffins wafting up from the kitchen as I felt the heater kick on. Today was going to be another cold day it would seem, my mother never allowed the house to be cold and always made sure if we were expecting cold weather the heater did its job well. “Get your hormonal asses down here!” She called and I nudged Rodrik. “So much for an early night?” laughing I rolled out of bed and threw back the blankets. “You’re going to need to wear the same clothes today.” “Damn, no extra clothes here anymore?” He jumped out of bed and quickly grabbed his clothes that had been strewn across the floor. “Nope, our last off again ended in a fight, remember?” I jumped out of the room barreling down the steps before we both had to recall it.“You know I think I put up with a lot,” my mother grumbled pouring herself a mug of coffee. “I thought we were done with the sleepovers?”“It was an accident.” I pointed to the muffins, “These ar

“Whose idea was it to start enlisting the girls?” My mother was already laying into my father when I got through the door, “And why did you volunteer your fucking only child?”“She’s strong enough to do it!” He yelled back. When I entered the kitchen I saw them both standing facing off as they had whenever he returned from the northern outpost. He was nicely dressed this time though in his dress uniform much the same as the officers who just served me the notice. His though, had several extra patches showing off his rank and many metals from whatever he did up there. He had removed his hat respectfully to my mother allowing his slicked back brown hair to show. The two of them couldn’t have been more different. It was a wonder they had ever fallen in love, though I guess I could say their differences were the reason I was an only child. Her hair was pulled back into a messy bun which I guess had been earlier better kept, in her frustration her hand continued to grab at her head as if

We walked to the edge of town where the forest started to take over allowing the light of the city to fade revealing the stars. I looked over at my friends Darla wrapped tightly in her coat, Laurel blowing warm breaths on her hands and the guys running ahead tackling and tossing over each other. This left me, I didn’t mind this cold, it was manageable comparatively. I kept my hands in my pockets trying desperately to relax until finally we arrived. The tower was just an old building from a different age. Maybe at one point it could have been a training facility teaching new recruits how to guard an outpost properly, now the local youth used it as a den of unsavory affairs most adults would have frowned upon. The large stoned building had an internal structure with a spiral staircase that reached all the way to the open aired top. When we entered we reached down gathering our stash of flashlights dispersing them amongst the group so no one tripped over the uneven cobbleston

“Two years ago you started this journey.” Dara was on her twentieth notebook. I had been counting. Today we were meant to spend the whole day with our counsellor and like always she was able to make it last, “Today I want you to write a letter to everyone you knew.” I shrugged just resigning to the session, I didn’t think I needed it but oh well I was getting this. “Why?” “I want you to tell them goodbye.” “What?” That caused me to start paying attention. “You need to tell them goodbye.” She said again, “You’re not going to see them ever again. In a few years they will think you’re dead. We need you to prepare for this because we are expecting it to be the hardest part of this journey.” “So you want me to say goodbye now?” She nodded, “Use today to write it out.” We broke for lunch and everyone was pondering over their own notebook. We had all been given these instructions it seems. “What are you going to say?” I looked to Dreyma she’d at least get to keep one member of her fa

Our days continued on. We thought it would change more but really we just saw the counsellors less. Granted we focused on specific weapon training now and I was allowed to focus on a spear, but apart from that everything else was the same. That is until a month passed. They started to separate us by blood type. We were given tasks that they said would fit our blood. Sage had been given menial tasks, reading, carrying stuff, cleaning. Dreyma more fighting and physical tasks that we were told were going to make sure all the difference. Me on the other hand, I was learning I needed to conduct myself with the highest of class and it was encouraged that I look down on the lower bloods. “I’m jealous of Sage and Dreyma.” I told Dara, “Sage gets to read, do research. Dreyma gets to use her training. I feel like everything that I worked toward before was useless.” “How do you mean?” “Yesterday I spent an hour learning how to brew tea.” “Did you notice if it was different to how yo

“It’s been a year.” Dara smiled, “Care to tell me how it’s been going?”It had been a year. In that time I had grown stronger, faster, and more sure of myself. Even learned to follow orders. By this time, my friends would have all aged out of their training camps and were well into their service at the barrier fighting whatever monster there was. “I think it’s going well.” my answers had become shorter. Maybe it was because I had less self doubt or maybe because I just didn’t feel broken anymore. After two months of training, they allowed us to write home. Of course with the understanding that all outgoing and incoming letters would be monitored with heavy scrutiny. I think being able to communicate with my mom and friends was what ended up making the difference. “Just well?” she tapped her pen on her clipboard, “Anything else you want to share? I hear the next stage of y

I was thrown down for the tenth time today. This time I stayed down. Apparently, fighting against the boys was the first true lesson they wanted to throw at us. We had spent the week following their orders and now we had to finally face off against someone far larger than us. When we arrived at this other base we were surprised at how much better put together it was. The buildings were far better maintained and they had actual sidewalks. On our way here we were once again reaffirmed of the secrecy of our mission. Lyra it seemed, was going to be a permanent fixture in the shadows. With the ever-looming threat of instant death or the slower suffocation over our heads, no one dared to talk about it.“This fucking sucks!” Sylis cursed picking herself up, “how the fuck are we meant to be stronger than you?” Compared to how our other training had been going this was honestly far less structured. We were self-guided the whole day able

They allowed us to eat dinner, which was a blessing. Even more shockingly, we went to bed at a reasonable hour. We weren’t sure why but Sage’s theory was that the counselors gave them a talking to about the difference between training and trying to kill a person.Maybe it was the power of suggestion, or maybe I was getting some kind of radiation from the barrier. That night though I dreamed of something odd and it was so vivid that I questioned if it was actually a dream or not.The sky was a swirling dazzle of colors as I looked out over a vast forest. There were too many stars in the sky and too may colors in the air. Wind itself was twirling around me as I was swept away by a feeling of pure bliss. My feet were exposed on the cold hard ground. I looked and saw the ground I was on was a pure white marble with grains of grey that reflected the starlight. I could hear someone talking farther away.Their voice was metall
