Chapter 5

Author: Frog Seed
"Did King Ragnar discover that she was an Atoner?" I asked, staring at the system.

It seemed to hesitate before answering. "No. He was simply in a foul mood that day, and she happened to bring him confectionery."

I sneered mockingly. "When has King Ragnar ever been in a good mood? He kills people on a whim, so what right do you have to send innocent players to atone for him?

"People like him belong in hell. You do too, and so do all the viewers commenting in the livestream!"

The system stayed cold and indifferent, while the comments were filled with gloating remarks.

"It's the first time King Ragnar has ever killed a consort. That's a new record!"

"This is fun. I wonder how many different deaths the remaining players will unlock."

Furious, I lunged at the system's projection before someone caught me and said there were updates from Elara.

She'd been delivering King Ragnar's laundry when an assassin attacked. Throwing all caution to the wind, she rushed forward to block the attack for him, and her atonement score shot to 70%.

The knife had gone straight into her heart, but thanks to the amnesty token she'd redeemed earlier, it was equivalent to giving her a second life.

The amnesty token simulated real injuries without causing death. So after three days in bed, she barely pulled through.

King Ragnar personally visited her and asked what reward she wanted.

She dropped to her knees, and resolution gleamed in her eyes as she declared, "I-I seek no reward, only that Your Majesty avenges me."

She recited the backstory she'd prepared. Her parents were murdered by her uncle's family, who took her and her sister in only for money. He abused them and eventually sold them off. She was passed around, and by sheer luck, she landed in the palace.

King Ragnar seemed moved by her story, and her atonement score climbed to 80%. He ordered an investigation at once, and Elara's partner had redeemed merit points for lifelike decoy puppets acting as the uncle's family.

When King Ragnar returned covered in blood, her atonement score progress was at 90%.

He pulled her out of the laundry maid quarters and made her his personal maid. Not only did he teach her to read, but he also allowed her to dine privately at his table.

No one dared to make a sound. We watched the score inch from 90% to 92% to 95%, then finally to 98%.

Three months later, with a wave of his hand, he declared she would be his queen. No one dared object because anyone who tried would lose their head.

King Ragnar meticulously prepared the coronation for a full month. Throughout, Elara played the role obediently and aligned with him in every thought.

More than once, he murmured, "You were made for me."

Even the commenters were impressed.

"Is she seriously gonna be the first to clear the game?"

"Nothing's suspicious so far."

"No! I want to see all of them dead!"

At last, the coronation day arrived.

Elara sent one final message to our group chat. "Everything depends on this moment."

We held our breaths and watched as she walked toward King Ragnar on the altar, dressed in an Aethelian gown. Right now, his expression looked exceptionally gentle.

He took her hand, and the two of them stood high above the crowd like they owned the world.

Elara's atonement score began ticking upward from 98.2% to 98.5% to 99.8%…

Then, it stopped again.

"Atonement score reaches 100%."The system's voice was as cold as always, but it carried a faint, barely noticeable trace of panic."Congratulations on clearing the game, Player 26. You may make one wish."I lowered my gaze and pulled the sword free.King Ragnar's body went limp while his eyes stayed on me, like he still couldn't understand.Touching his cheek, I softly murmured, "This game was never about saving you. It was about killing you."The world around me began to shatter. The Royal Gardens, the moon, the royal mantle, and King Ragnar's corpse began to crack like a mirror. The system's projection appeared before me. "What is your wish?""I want everything restored," I demanded. "I want my entire class back in our original world, and I want you, and everyone watching the livestream, to disappear."The system stayed silent for a moment before saying, "Only one wish can be granted."I smiled. "Then bring my class back."With a flash of white light, I jolted awake on th

I replied to all of King Ragnar's letters. "You're not too harsh. We are one, and I trust whatever you do."He began wearing that broken sword at his waist with the red ribbon fluttering over his royal mantle. The ministers were too terrified to speak, but he smiled with pride.Slowly, his handwriting began to tremble.Once, he wrote. "I learned a new sword technique. With one thrust, I can stab through three throats. I've trained so hard, but I still can't see you. They call me a tyrant, but I only want to see you."That was when he began to slip into madness.First, he killed every physician he could find and demanded that they cut me out of his body. Then, he captured mystic masters and instructed them to perform their rituals. When they told him a sacrifice of 100 lives was required, he slaughtered 100 innocent commoners.Blood soaked the court as he held the sword and cried out, "Why won't you come out?"I sighed within his consciousness. When he was staring blankly at the

"Troublesome brat," the old man grumbled under his breath and turned toward the table to fetch some water. This was my chance!I sawed faster at the ropes. When the knife was caught in the fibers, I yanked hard, and one strand snapped. The old man returned with a cup of water and held it to my lips. "Hurry up!" he barked. I opened my mouth to drink, but my eyes were fixed on his hands. The moment he let his guard down, I violently jerked my wrist, and the remaining rope snapped. I snatched the cup and smashed it into his face. The ceramic shattered, and hot water splashed across his skin. While he cried out in pain, I seized the chance to lunge at him and drive the small knife toward his neck.He was fast to react, throwing up an arm to block the attack. The knife sliced against his arm, and blood gushed out.Stumbling back, he knocked over the pot of medicine. Black sludge and soaked herbs spilled across the floor."You rebellious wretch!" he roared and charged. I dodged

I walked up to the page, and just as he thought I'd bend over, I clenched my fist.I threw that punch with everything I had, right into his lower body.He let out a sharp cry and dropped to the ground. His face drained of color, and sweat poured down his forehead. Still, I didn't stop. I bent down to pick up the sword and raised it to his throat. My voice was rough when I spoke, like my throat was full of sand. "Would anyone else like to try me?" The maids who'd been watching were terrified and backed away. An older maid looked like she was about to call for help, but I shot her a warning glare and pressed the sword harder against the page's neck until it drew a thin line of blood."If anyone yells, I'll let you feel it too."No one dared move. The page grimaced in pain, but he dared not even whimper.I lowered the sword and turned to walk toward the small woodshed in the corner without even looking at him.As I reached the door, I heard movement behind me. When I turned, I

Hazel's atonement score kept climbing until it finally reached 100%. That was when it plummeted because King Ragnar had found a better hound. The two dogs were pitted against each other. Hazel was drugged by King Ragnar and gradually weakened before the other hound tore her apart alive.Out of 36 players, only I remained. By then, I'd lost track of how much time had passed. The comments were still full of mocking remarks. Some rooted for me to die early so they could watch the next batch of newcomers join the game.A few bet I'd break down and kill myself, but I didn't. Instead, I bought an hourglass, a broken sword, and a strip of red ribbon with my remaining merit points. Then, I selected my role. "System, I'd like to return to King Ragnar's childhood and become the King himself."After everything we'd been through, I finally understood King Ragnar's nature. He was selfish, cruel, and predatory, so only he himself could atone for someone like him.The comments were stunned.

We looked up, only to realize that King Ragnar's sword had driven straight through Elara's abdomen.A second later, a volley of arrows rained down on the crowd below. No one was spared, not the ministers, guards, or even the palace maids."Player 31 has been eliminated."Player 10 has been eliminated."…Apart from Elara, all four players were shot down by the wave of arrows.Elara stared at King Ragnar in despair. "Why?"A trace of pity flickered across his face as he explained, "I like you. You remind me of myself, but one of me is enough for this world."I won't let you journey to the afterlife alone. These people will keep you company."He pulled his sword free, watching as she collapsed, then a twisted fascination flashed in his eyes. "Has anyone ever told you how beautiful your eyes are? They're so clear, so clean, like the version of me that never got stained with blood. I adore them."With that, he ripped her eyes out with his bare hands. As Elara screamed in excru
