Finding Summer

It is two days since my encounter in the diner. I can't stop thinking about her. I keep checking my phone to see if she has called. She is consuming me. I guess I am fucked.

Not only does this girl have my head in a spin, but I seem to have become the daily amusement for these two idiots. So as early as this morning is, Devan feels it is good to start.

"Are you still thinking of Summer?"

"Yes, and your problem is?"

"You look like a lovesick puppy."

"Your ass is a lovesick puppy."

"At least my ass is not in love."

"I am not in love."

"Oh, you so are."

"You don't even know what love looks like."

"I am looking at it now. You are so screwed."

"I know."

Then Devan comes up with the best idea for the day, or so he thinks.

"Let's take a drive out there again.”

"Do you know how to get lost there again?"

"No."

"Can you remember the damn place's name?"

"No. Why don't you phone her."

"I have tried."

"And?"

"I put it down before it rings."

"You chop people's fingers off and you can't even make a phone call."

"Give me the damn number." Matson takes my phone and dials the number that I tried to dial nearly twenty times today.

"Hey, is this Summer. It's Matson, Aaron's friend. The dumb ass wants to speak to you, but he is too scared."

Matson hands me the phone.

"Hey, baby."

"Hello, Aaron. I am really excited to hear from you."

"I am just as excited to speak to you. How are you doing?"

"I am very well. Thank you for that big tip. I have almost enough to come to the city now."

"I can't wait for you to get here. I would like to spend more time with you."

"I would like that too. I actually miss you sort of."

"Me too."

"I must get ready for work, but phone back soon."

"Look after yourself, baby."

I drop the call and watch as the two idiots stand and smile at me.

"Is there something wrong with your faces?"

"Baby is in love," the first idiot says.

"Baby misses his baby," the second idiot adds.

"You two really feel like getting slapped, don't you? Do something useful and find me that town's name."

Matson just looks at me, confused. "Why don't you just ask her?"

"Just find me the damn name."

"When is she coming to the city?"

"I am going to fetch her."

"Does she know that?"

"Get me the goddamn name!"

"You even more grumpy than yesterday."

"What did I just say?"

"You are going to slap me."

"Get that name! I want her here with me!"

I am screwed, they are right; I am in love with a waitress that works in a dinky toy dinner out there in the middle of nowhere. The problem is that I don't know where nowhere is, and it is driving me insane. I want her to be here with me, I want her, and I want her to be just mine.

It has been two hours since I have spoken to her, and I still cannot stop thinking of her. It is driving me insane. I can't focus on our job today; love does make you weak. I need to get my head back into the game.

"Get me a damn whiskey."

"Hey," Matson stops me. "We have a job."

"I know that. I am not thinking with my head."

"You are thinking with your head, just not the damn right one."

"If you not careful, then you will become the job today. Let's just go and get this done with."

I am not a very good man; I am bad, as bad as you can get them. The only thing good about me is me being good at what I do; I am the best. My services don't come cheap; I get the job done. I have to get my hands dirty, actually dirty. Sick enough, I enjoy my job, I enjoy hurting people, bad people. I am not a boss or a crazy-ass mobster; I am an enforcer.

With that being said, Devan makes a smart ass comment again. "I think you should fall in love more often. You wasted him."

"I am frustrated."

"Ya, we could see that. After what you did to his face, no one will ever know who he is."

"That was the whole damn point."

Then my phone rings.

I don't know the number.

"Aaron, hello."

"Hello, Aaron."

My heart skips a beat, and I swear my face lights up.

"Hey, baby."

"To what do I owe this wonderful surprise."

"I am on a break, and the girls said I must phone you."

"Tell the girls a say thank you. How are you?"

"I am very well. I was thinking about you this morning. Do you also think of me?"

"Yes, I do a lot."

"I can't wait to come to the city."

"What is that silly town called there where you stay."

"It is..."

The phone goes dead.

"Fuck!"

I tried phoning back, it does not even connect.

"Fuck!"

"What now?" Matson asks.

"It was her, but the phone died before she could say the name."

"We are getting close."

"Get closer."

The next few days go out in a blur, I don't hear from her, and both the numbers I have for her is out of order.

"This is fantastic. Do you have that damn town's name?"

"The tracking company does not want to give it to us," Devan explains.

"Go and break their fingers or something."

"I will see what I can do."

"See better."

My phone rings and I don't know the number. I hope it is her.

"Hello, Aaron."

"Summer. I was worried there."

"The storm knocked out all the phone lines except the one here at the bar."

"I think you should get out of that silly town."

"Oh, yes, it is going to be soon. But I have to go; there is a line of people waiting to use the phone. I will phone soon again."

"Wait, Summer!"

But she drops the call.

"Give me that tracking company's number."
