Chapter 3

Author: Sweet All Over
Nora's face was frighteningly grim. "John, do you have to argue about this in front of everyone?"

I looked at her. "My mom somehow became a housekeeper in her own home. Am I not allowed to say anything?"

Leonard sneered. "Don't make it sound so awful. Your mother basically lived her whole life in the kitchen. Calling her a housekeeper isn't that much of a stretch."

Mom's complexion turned pale. Dad braced a hand against his aching back and stepped forward. "What did you just say?"

Caleb's mother, Patricia Watson, finally set down her wineglass and spoke leisurely.

"Oh, Nora. Life is hard when your husband is too petty. Take our Caleb, for example. He'd never embarrass his woman in front of the others."

Nora didn't argue. Her silence cut deeper than any words could have.

Dad looked at her, his voice hoarse. "Nora, we paid half the down payment for this place. What you've pulled today is frankly unacceptable."

Nora looked grim. "Mr. Shepherd, I will pay you back."

"I'm not asking you to pay us back," he said. "I'm talking about basic decency."

Leonard let out a mocking laugh. "You contributed a little money and think you get to be the master of your daughter-in-law's home?"

Mom panicked. "No, that's not what we meant."

The more she tried to explain, the more pleased the Jacksons looked.

The down payment on this apartment was 387,000 dollars. Nora put up 193,500, while Mom and Dad contributed 150,000. The remaining 43,500 was from my savings after we got married.

The deed was registered in both Nora's and my names.

Dad sold the house back home to come up with his share. Mom melted her gold bracelet and the commemorative gold medal her workplace had given her when she retired.

Back then, Nora had held Dad's hand and said, "Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd, from now on, this will be your home, too."

Now, she had them working around the place like housekeepers.

"They contributed almost half the down payment. How's that considered a little money?"

Nora pursed her lips. "We'll talk about the money later, but we will not make a scene in front of our guests here."

I turned to the Jacksons. "Guests? In what world are they considered guests?"

Caleb came over with red-rimmed eyes. "John, I know you don't like me, but my parents only came today to see Ms. Ford's new home. They didn't mean any harm."

I corrected him. "It's also my home."

He froze.

I picked up my phone and opened the property management portal. "If you claim this was just a mistake, I'll ask the property manager right now."

Nora reached out to stop me. "Haven't we embarrassed ourselves enough?"

I pulled my hand away and immediately started a video call with the property manager. He answered quickly. "Hello, Mr. Shepherd."

"Who submitted the move-in registration form?" I asked.

He paused briefly. "Mr. Jackson did. He said your wife was busy with work, so he'd be handling everything for the household from then on."

The living room went so quiet one could hear a pin drop.

"Then why was my mother registered as the housekeeper?"

He flipped through the records. "From the remarks, Mr. Jackson noted that your mother would mainly be responsible for cooking and cleaning, so it'd be more convenient for her to use the staff entrance when coming and going."

Mom swayed, and I caught her quickly.

From the moment she stepped through that door, she wasn't a mother-in-law, a mother, or someone who had helped pay for this home. She was just a housekeeper who was supposed to use the staff entrance.

Nora's face turned livid. "That's enough. Hang up."

I didn't.

"And what about me?" I asked one last question. "Why was I listed as a visitor?"

The manager answered carefully, "Mr. Jackson said you don't live here often, so he asked us to give you temporary visitor access for now. He said we could rearrange it later, depending on your wife's arrangements."

I snorted, then ended the call.

Caleb stood there, his face eerily pale. "John, I only made those arrangements on Ms. Ford's behalf because I thought you were always busy at work."

I looked at him. "You sure were helpful, weren't you? Why didn't you transfer the deed to your name while you were at it?"

The day I got my divorce certificate, the weather was beautiful. Mom carried an insulated food container filled with the pork-and-potato stew she had simmered that morning. She said we should have something warm to celebrate the ordeal finally being over. That way, we could put those cold, difficult days behind. When Nora came out of the courthouse, she stopped briefly. She handed me an envelope."This is the 30,000 dollars. I'll cover it for now. We can deal with Caleb's share once we recover the money from him."I didn't take it. "Transfer it to my lawyer's escrow account according to the agreement, please. Thanks."Her face turned a little pale. "I just wanted to give the money back to your parents in person.""There's no need. What they need is for you to stop disturbing them from now on."Internally, Nora fought with herself for a long time. In the end, she put the envelope away."I understand."The apartment sold without a hitch. After the mortgage and taxes were deducte

Sometime later, Nora finally agreed to the divorce, though she refused to sell the apartment."That was our home," she said. "I want to keep it."I read the message Nick forwarded to me and felt nothing. On mediation day, Nora came with her parents. She had lost a ton of weight and looked somewhat unkempt. When she saw me, her eyes lit up for a second, then quickly dimmed.Michael walked over to my parents first. "Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd, my deepest apologies."Dad gave him a polite nod. "I think we're way past apologies now."Michael's eyes reddened as he pushed a document across the table."The apartment will be sold. After the mortgage is paid off, your family will be reimbursed first for the money you put in and the renovation costs you lost."Nora will personally pay another 30,000 dollars in compensation. As for the same amount Caleb took, we'll take legal action to recover it."Nora's head snapped up. "Dad, do we have to sell the apartment?"Michael looked at her. "Why e

That night, Nick drafted the divorce agreement and the lawsuit documents.Everything was included—our respective contributions to the apartment, the mortgage payments made during the marriage, renovation expenses, the money transferred to Caleb, the mortgage application materials, the validity of the acknowledgment of debt, and the recording documenting the Jacksons' scheme."We can argue that the acknowledgement of debt was signed under a serious misunderstanding, or even fraud," Nick explained."The mortgage was never completed, but the application itself shows there was a risk of the other party transferring or disposing of marital property. I recommend applying for a preservation order on the assets."I looked at the wooden rocking horse on the table. "Proceed. I can't let my parents sell their house, just to end up losing their dignity."Nora refused to sign the divorce papers. Instead, she texted me every day."John, I've made sure the deed is in the right order.""I fired

The recording played, and Patricia's shrill voice came through."Look at his parents. They're so poor and pathetic. They put up a little money and suddenly think they own this place. Once we've got this place secured, have Nora sweet-talk John into giving up his share."His dad already signed the acknowledgement of debt anyway. Even if they make a fuss, it won't change anything."Then came Caleb's voice. "Keep your voice down, Mom. Once I actually get Ms. Ford pregnant, her family's money will be mine sooner or later."Mom covered her mouth.Dad kept his head bowed, his voice hoarse. "I didn't want you two fighting right after moving into your new home, but now I've thought it through. We don't want her in our family anymore."Tears spilled from my eyes. That night, I contacted a lawyer and sent over everything I had.The property registration, the mortgage notice, the bank statements, the acknowledgement of debt, screenshots from their social media, as well as Dad's recording.

The living room fell silent again."Did you promise him that?" I asked Nora, my voice hardly a whisper.Nora lowered her head. This time, she didn't even bother explaining herself.I smiled bitterly. She had promised to take care of my parents when they got old, promised that our new home would have a room for them, and promised that the first toast at our housewarming party would be to them.At the same time, she had also promised to help Caleb. Now, it seemed she hadn't kept a single one of those promises.I removed my wedding ring and placed it on top of the mortgage notice. "Weren't you going to give him a home? If so, pay for it with your life, not with my parents' blood, sweat, and tears."I helped Mom and Dad toward the door, but Nora chased after us. "John, don't do anything rash. We still don't know the whole story."I turned back and looked at her. "Everything that's happened today makes it clear where we stand in your life. Or does anything involving Caleb deserve a

The living room was so quiet that the only sound was the hum of the fish tank pump.Nora thought she had misheard. "What did you say?"My voice was steady. "I said I want a divorce."Caleb looked even more devastated. "John, please don't fight with Ms. Ford because of me. I'll leave right now. I promise I'll never come to your home again."Every word sounded like he was backing down, yet somehow, he still managed to make himself the center of everything.Sure enough, Nora turned to me with a disapproving look. "How did you turn into this?"I snorted."I came here today because there's something I need to deal with," Michael suddenly said. He pulled another set of documents from his bag and slammed them onto the coffee table. "Caleb, you told me you had a paternity test proving that Nora had a child through surrogacy using your sperm."Everyone froze.Nora whipped her head around. "I had a what?"Caleb was petrified.Michael gave a cold laugh. "You actually tried to fool me w
