Chapter 2

Author: Sweet All Over
The housewarming video continued playing on the TV.

On the screen, Nora and Caleb were shopping for furniture together, picking out lights and measuring curtains. He stood in my kitchen, smiling at the camera.

"We definitely need an open-concept kitchen. I like chatting while I cook."

The next second, the footage cut to the master bedroom. Caleb sat on the edge of the bed and looked up at Nora. "Don't you think the mattress is a little too soft?"

She smiled. "Well, you prefer it that way. That's all that matters."

The entire living room fell silent.

That bed was supposed to be Nora's and mine, yet even the mattress was picked out according to Caleb's preferences.

Caleb's face went pale, and he hurriedly explained, "John, Ms. Ford was just busy that day, so I had to help you guys test it out."

I looked at him. "Testing out the mattress in our bedroom, huh?"

He looked on the verge of tears. "That's not what I meant."

Nora switched off the TV, her voice turning cold. "Enough, John. Caleb is my assistant. He handled almost everything during the renovation. If you're not going to thank him, fine, but don't make him out to be some awful person."

I chuckled. "Thank him? Am I supposed to thank him for turning my mom into your housekeeper, trampling on my dad's hard work, and making me a visitor in my own home?"

She froze. "What are you talking about?"

I passed her my phone. The move-in registration form couldn't be any clearer.

"Resident(s): Nora Ford, Caleb Jackson"

"Visitor: John Shepherd"

"Housekeeper: Maggie Cooper"

Mom saw it, too. Her lips quivered, and she couldn't utter a word.

When the Jacksons had called her into the kitchen to scrub the pots earlier, she had even made excuses for them. She had spent her whole life being honest and genuine, so she never imagined something like this could happen.

Little did she know, she had already been reduced to a housekeeper in her own home.

Nora's expression shifted. "The property manager must've made a mistake."

I stared at her. "A mistake? How did they somehow manage to enter Mom's ID number, then?"

She swallowed hard.

Caleb's trembling voice cut in. "John, I must've mixed things up when I registered the renovation workers. I didn't mean to, I swear."

I turned to him. "If you were only registering the renovation workers, why did you list yourself as the resident?"

His face went white.

Nora frowned and stepped in front of him. "He's already explained himself, John."

I nodded. "Sure. Then explain one more thing."

I walked toward the room at the end of the hallway. It was supposed to be the guest room for Mom and Dad.

Before coming, Mom had even asked me three times. "Are you sure we can stay here sometimes? We won't be getting in the way of you two, will we?"

I told them they wouldn't. They had helped pay for this apartment, after all, so they had every right to stay.

Yet when I opened the door, Caleb's clothes filled the closet. His work ties and belts hung neatly from the hangers, beneath a small label that read, "Caleb's Personal Closet".

Mom stood behind me. The dishcloth in her hand fell to the floor.

"I didn't think your parents would come here often," Caleb muttered weakly. "I just thought we should use the space wisely."

Nora quickly backed him up. "It's not like your parents are used to living in the city, anyway."

How ironic. Mom and Dad sold their old house so we could afford to buy this new apartment. In the end, they didn't even have a room in my house.

I returned to the living room and slammed the wine bottle onto the dining table. "Talk to me, Nora. Who the hell gives you the nerve to let him move into our home?"

The day I got my divorce certificate, the weather was beautiful. Mom carried an insulated food container filled with the pork-and-potato stew she had simmered that morning. She said we should have something warm to celebrate the ordeal finally being over. That way, we could put those cold, difficult days behind. When Nora came out of the courthouse, she stopped briefly. She handed me an envelope."This is the 30,000 dollars. I'll cover it for now. We can deal with Caleb's share once we recover the money from him."I didn't take it. "Transfer it to my lawyer's escrow account according to the agreement, please. Thanks."Her face turned a little pale. "I just wanted to give the money back to your parents in person.""There's no need. What they need is for you to stop disturbing them from now on."Internally, Nora fought with herself for a long time. In the end, she put the envelope away."I understand."The apartment sold without a hitch. After the mortgage and taxes were deducte

Sometime later, Nora finally agreed to the divorce, though she refused to sell the apartment."That was our home," she said. "I want to keep it."I read the message Nick forwarded to me and felt nothing. On mediation day, Nora came with her parents. She had lost a ton of weight and looked somewhat unkempt. When she saw me, her eyes lit up for a second, then quickly dimmed.Michael walked over to my parents first. "Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd, my deepest apologies."Dad gave him a polite nod. "I think we're way past apologies now."Michael's eyes reddened as he pushed a document across the table."The apartment will be sold. After the mortgage is paid off, your family will be reimbursed first for the money you put in and the renovation costs you lost."Nora will personally pay another 30,000 dollars in compensation. As for the same amount Caleb took, we'll take legal action to recover it."Nora's head snapped up. "Dad, do we have to sell the apartment?"Michael looked at her. "Why e

That night, Nick drafted the divorce agreement and the lawsuit documents.Everything was included—our respective contributions to the apartment, the mortgage payments made during the marriage, renovation expenses, the money transferred to Caleb, the mortgage application materials, the validity of the acknowledgment of debt, and the recording documenting the Jacksons' scheme."We can argue that the acknowledgement of debt was signed under a serious misunderstanding, or even fraud," Nick explained."The mortgage was never completed, but the application itself shows there was a risk of the other party transferring or disposing of marital property. I recommend applying for a preservation order on the assets."I looked at the wooden rocking horse on the table. "Proceed. I can't let my parents sell their house, just to end up losing their dignity."Nora refused to sign the divorce papers. Instead, she texted me every day."John, I've made sure the deed is in the right order.""I fired

The recording played, and Patricia's shrill voice came through."Look at his parents. They're so poor and pathetic. They put up a little money and suddenly think they own this place. Once we've got this place secured, have Nora sweet-talk John into giving up his share."His dad already signed the acknowledgement of debt anyway. Even if they make a fuss, it won't change anything."Then came Caleb's voice. "Keep your voice down, Mom. Once I actually get Ms. Ford pregnant, her family's money will be mine sooner or later."Mom covered her mouth.Dad kept his head bowed, his voice hoarse. "I didn't want you two fighting right after moving into your new home, but now I've thought it through. We don't want her in our family anymore."Tears spilled from my eyes. That night, I contacted a lawyer and sent over everything I had.The property registration, the mortgage notice, the bank statements, the acknowledgement of debt, screenshots from their social media, as well as Dad's recording.

The living room fell silent again."Did you promise him that?" I asked Nora, my voice hardly a whisper.Nora lowered her head. This time, she didn't even bother explaining herself.I smiled bitterly. She had promised to take care of my parents when they got old, promised that our new home would have a room for them, and promised that the first toast at our housewarming party would be to them.At the same time, she had also promised to help Caleb. Now, it seemed she hadn't kept a single one of those promises.I removed my wedding ring and placed it on top of the mortgage notice. "Weren't you going to give him a home? If so, pay for it with your life, not with my parents' blood, sweat, and tears."I helped Mom and Dad toward the door, but Nora chased after us. "John, don't do anything rash. We still don't know the whole story."I turned back and looked at her. "Everything that's happened today makes it clear where we stand in your life. Or does anything involving Caleb deserve a

The living room was so quiet that the only sound was the hum of the fish tank pump.Nora thought she had misheard. "What did you say?"My voice was steady. "I said I want a divorce."Caleb looked even more devastated. "John, please don't fight with Ms. Ford because of me. I'll leave right now. I promise I'll never come to your home again."Every word sounded like he was backing down, yet somehow, he still managed to make himself the center of everything.Sure enough, Nora turned to me with a disapproving look. "How did you turn into this?"I snorted."I came here today because there's something I need to deal with," Michael suddenly said. He pulled another set of documents from his bag and slammed them onto the coffee table. "Caleb, you told me you had a paternity test proving that Nora had a child through surrogacy using your sperm."Everyone froze.Nora whipped her head around. "I had a what?"Caleb was petrified.Michael gave a cold laugh. "You actually tried to fool me w
