Chapter 1

Author: Thai Ginger
The moment they carried out my sentence, only one thought filled my mind.

I was innocent.

My name was Vera Stanton. I was 34 years old, chief of obstetrics and gynecology at the state Women & Infants Hospital, and a candidate for deputy director.

I had gone ten consecutive years without a single complication in the delivery room. Even my fiancé was recognized as the top surgeon in the entire hospital.

Everyone said I was blessed. I had it all… career, love and a bright future.

I believed that too. I thought my life was charmed.

None of that mattered now. My perfect life was over.

I had not made a surgical error. The patient was already dead by the time I arrived.

Still, no one believed me.

They had witnesses, physical evidence and surveillance footage. Every piece of it pointed at me.

The investigation determined that I had administered a lethal overdose of anesthesia, and my fingerprints were somehow on the syringe. Even security cameras showed me entering the operating room.

Even my fiancé, Cole Barrett, took the stand and testified against me.

"Vera was desperate to lock down the deputy director title. She was grabbing every surgery she could get her hands on during that stretch.

"The day it happened, she was already in rough shape. I tried to talk her out of it, but she wouldn't listen. She told me that once she finished that surgery, the position was as good as hers.

"I never thought it'd come to this... I thought she was at the very least a doctor with some integrity."

I fought back with everything I had, but his testimony was too convincing. Everyone believed him. They praised him for having the courage to turn in his own fiancée and called me a monster.

It was not until after my death that I learned the truth.

The surgery had been performed by his junior from medical school, Nina Foster. The patient had been Nina's. She was the one who administered the anesthesia and she was the one who made the fatal mistake.

Cole had called me in at the last minute to take the fall for her. He tampered with the surveillance footage and swapped the syringe so my fingerprints would be on it.

Every last piece of it was a trap he had set just to shield the woman he truly cared about.

The day the verdict was announced, my parents were ambushed by reporters and the victim's family outside the courthouse. The weight of it broke them. Three days after my execution, they threw themselves off a building.

I watched it happen as a spirit, powerless to stop it.

I was consumed by hatred. I refused to accept it. Even in death, I could not rest.

The fury swallowed me whole and, in that same instant, my eyes snapped open.

Dim streetlight filtered through a car window and I grabbed my phone.

It was March 29, 2026, 9:22 pm.

I had come back, dropped right into the driver's seat 30 minutes before the surgery, already on my way to the hospital.

I sat in the driver's seat, my heart hammering so hard it felt like it might burst out of my chest.

My phone buzzed, and Cole's name flashed across the screen.

"Vera, where are you?

"The patient's about to deliver. The family asked for you by name. They came here specifically for your reputation.

"Everything's prepped on this end. We're just waiting on you!"

His voice was strained and urgent, nothing like the calm, collected surgeon everyone knew him to be.

Margaret was seated along one side of the long table. She caught my eye when I walked in and gave me a small nod.I found a seat and sat down. The meeting began with a briefing on the past week's investigation, followed by the medical examiner's report, the tech unit's surveillance analysis and the results of the review into Nina's case files from the past eight months.Every single item pointed to the same conclusion. Cole and Nina had systematically concealed medical malpractice, tampered with evidence, committed perjury and framed another person for their crimes.Any one of those charges alone was enough to put them away for years. When the briefing ended, the conference room fell silent for several seconds. The hospital's newly appointed chief administrator was Hugh Brannigan, a man in his mid-50s who had previously served on the state board of health and had a reputation for being uncompromising. He leafed through the documents on the table, looked up, and let his gaze rest

Now she was right here in my arms, warm and alive, her tears dripping onto my neck.."Mom, I'm fine." I patted her back with my left hand, my voice shaking slightly. "Really, I'm fine.""Your arm is broken and yet you're telling me you're fine?" She lifted her head, her face a mess of tears. "Who did this to you? I'll kill them myself!"I could not help but laugh, and somewhere in the middle of laughing my eyes started to sting.Dad was standing outside the door. He had not come in. He had never been good with words, not once in his life, but I knew he was there. He stood in the hallway smoking one cigarette after another, the butts piling up on the floor around him. A nurse walked by and glanced at him, looking like she wanted to say something, but she let it go.On the sixth day, there was a new development in the case. Cole's lawyer showed up wanting to discuss a settlement with me.I refused to see him.A settlement? What exactly was he going to settle with? He owed me a li

The nurse kept talking while she changed my bandage, not even trying to hide her satisfaction."He always acted so high and mighty around the department. It turns out this is the kind of person he really is."I said nothing.Cole had been detained and so had Nina, but this was far from over. The real surprise came on the fourth day. That afternoon, an uninvited guest appeared in my hospital room. It was Raymond Calder, the director of the hospital. His hair was streaked with gray and he wore gold-rimmed glasses. He walked in carrying a fruit basket with a warm smile already in place."Vera, how are you recovering?"I looked at him and did not respond. In my last life, this man had been the first to issue a public statement after everything happened. He told the press that my conduct was an isolated case of personal misconduct, that the hospital maintained strict management protocols, and that they would cooperate fully with the investigation. He had scrubbed his own hands spo

"Nina's still young. She just graduated. She..." His voice was raw, and he sounded like he was begging."She didn't mean to do it. She got too nervous during the surgery and didn’t control the dosage. Can't you just...""Just what?" My voice was quiet. "Take the fall for your precious junior?"He froze."Cole, when you sent me to my death in my last life, did you ever stop to think about what would happen to my parents? Did it ever cross your mind that they would jump off a building? That my name would be dragged through the mud? That every person in this state would believe I was a murderer?"He blinked, caught off guard. "What do you mean in your last life?"I did not explain. He did not need to understand."Do you want to know what I hate most?" I looked him straight in the eye and measured every word."It's not that you set me up. It's not that you lied under oath. It's that after I was dead, everyone thought you were noble for turning in your own fiancée. They thought you

I stared at the ceiling and started thinking about what came next.Cole and Nina were not getting out of this. The chain of evidence had already fallen apart, and they had no time to patch it up, if patching was even possible. The moment the medical examiner's autopsy report came in, the truth would be impossible to bury. However, was that enough? It was not.In my last life, I had been sentenced to death. My parents had been driven to jump off a building. My name had been dragged through the mud until every person in the state knew the hospital had employed a killer.Even if the truth came out now, who was going to apologize to me? Who was going to give me my parents back?Cole was not going to prison just for a medical incident. He had fabricated evidence, tampered with surveillance footage and committed perjury. Every single one of those was a criminal offense.Nina was not going to get off with just having her license revoked, either. She had administered the anesthetic with

I spoke slowly, giving every word its full weight."Now that something went wrong, you want me to take the blame? Too bad you didn't account for me getting into an accident on the way and breaking my arm. If that hadn't happened, you would have pinned the whole thing on me tonight, wouldn't you?"The moment those words left my mouth, every set of eyes in the room turned to Nina. She stood there in a white coat with the state Women & Infants Hospital badge clipped to her chest. She was an intern, barely two months into her obstetrics rotation. Without someone protecting her, she never would have had the nerve to scrub in on a surgery."I didn't..." Nina shook her head frantically, her voice thin and shrill."Vera is lying! She's the one who performed that surgery! She's jealous of me. She's always been jealous of how close Cole and I are...""That's enough." Captain Ross cut her off and reached for his radio."Get the tech unit in here. I want the raw surveillance data from the o
