Chapter 9: The Darkness Before the Trap

The third period began with an eerie, unnatural hush that draped over the arena like a shroud. The blood-soaked excitement from the previous intermission had mutated into something cold, tense, and entirely volatile.

As I stood in the dim, narrow concrete passageway of the lower south corridor, the distant, muffled thwack of hockey sticks hitting the ice echoed like gunfire.

Kaelen stood a few paces away, completely enveloped by the deep shadows of a recessed equipment alcove. He had stripped off his bulky hockey pads, now wearing only his black Reapers training shirt and jeans.

His massive, scarred frame was entirely motionless, his dark eyes fixed on the entrance of the tunnel. He was a silent predator waiting for the bait to be taken.

My phone buzzed in my hand. A text from Chloe: Cynthia bit. She told Ryker you’re alone in the south hall. He’s skating off the ice under the guise of an equipment malfunction in two minutes. The lights are going down.

My fingers trembled as I gripped the phone, stuffing it into the pocket of Dominic's oversized hoodie.

Let them come, Lupine whispered in the back of my mind, her voice no longer fearful, but dripping with a dark, secondary fated-mate confidence. Let the false prince see what a real pack looks like.

Suddenly, the relentless roar of the arena above us died out completely.

Clack. Clack. Clack.

The distinct, sharp sound of hockey blades walking on the rubber floor mats echoed from the far end of the corridor. Someone was coming down the tunnel in a hurry.

A moment later, the heavy overhead fluorescent lights flickered once, hummed violently, and died. The corridor was instantly plunged into pitch-black, suffocating darkness. The only illumination came from the faint, red glow of the emergency exit sign at the very end of the hall.

"Elara?"

Ryker’s voice cut through the dark. It sounded ragged, frantic, and entirely unhinged. The heavy scent of his unstable, toxic Alpha aura flooded the narrow space, smelling sour—like burnt copper and desperation.

I didn't answer. I pressed my back against the cold concrete wall, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

"I know you're down here," Ryker hissed, his footsteps growing closer, louder. "Chloe told us everything. You think you're clever, running off with Garcia? You think those Blackwood bastards are going to protect you once the league strips them of their titles for border violations?"

He stepped into the faint red glow of the exit sign. His blue Silverfang jersey was stained with sweat and his own dried blood from Kaelen's right hook. His golden hair was wild, his eyes bloodshot as he scanned the darkness.

"You're coming back to the pack house, Elara," he growled, reaching out blindly into the dark toward my silhouette. "You're going to sign the pack recantation papers. I won't let you ruin my future as Alpha because of your pathetic little temper tantrum. You’re an Icefang Omega, and you will obey your prince!"

His heavy, gloved hand clamped down brutally on my shoulder, his fingers digging into my skin through the fabric of the hoodie.

But before he could drag me forward, a terrifyingly low, guttural growl vibrated from the shadows directly behind him.

Ryker froze, the color instantly draining from his face even in the dim red light.

A massive, calloused hand reached out of the dark, gripping Ryker’s wrist with the force of a hydraulic press. Crunch. The sound of Ryker’s heavy hockey glove compressing under pure, raw muscle echoed through the hall.

"Ah!" Ryker shrieked, his knees buckling as he was forced to his joints by the sheer, overwhelming physical strength of the man behind him.

Kaelen stepped out of the alcove, his towering, scarred form completely eclipsing the faint emergency light. He didn't say a word. He didn't need to. With a single, effortless jerk of his arm, Kaelen flung the future Alpha Prince of the Icefang Pack across the corridor. Ryker crashed violently into the metal equipment lockers, the heavy steel denting under the impact as he slumped to the floor.

"You..." Ryker gasped, clutching his dislocated shoulder, his eyes wide with absolute terror as he stared up at the silent giant. "Cross? You're supposed to be in the penalty box—"

"The penalty box doesn't apply when someone touches our mate," a smooth, chillingly playful voice echoed from the opposite end of the hall.

The emergency doors pushed open, and the twins, Zane and Tristan, stepped into the corridor. The red light caught the wicked smirk on Zane’s silver lip ring and the dark, tensed tattoos wrapping up Tristan’s neck. They were turning their hockey tape rolls around their knuckles, their shared Alpha aura expanding until the air in the hallway felt too thick to breathe.

"Looks like the little prince lost his way," Zane chuckled, stepping forward with a predatory grace.

"Looks like we need to teach him a lesson about boundaries," Tristan mirrored, his voice deadly quiet.

Ryker scrambled backward on the floor like a wounded animal, his toxic pride entirely shattered. He looked at Kaelen, then at the twins, and finally at me. For the first time in his arrogant life, he realized he wasn't the apex predator. He was surrounded by four Alphas who looked at him like he was nothing more than prey.

Before the twins could close the distance, the stadium’s backup generators roared to life. The overhead lights slammed back on, blindingly bright.

And standing at the very mouth of the tunnel, still clad in his full captain’s gear, was Dominic.

His silver eyes burned with a terrifying, absolute dominance as he looked down at Ryker writhing on the floor. Dominic didn't look at his rivals; his gaze locked entirely onto me, scanning my body until he was certain I hadn't been hurt.

"The game is over, Blackthorn," Dominic murmured, his voice echoing with the crushing weight of a billionaire king. "The final buzzer just sounded. 5-1. We won."

“What?!” Ryker let out a pathetic, bloody laugh. "You think... you think a hockey game changes anything, Garcia? My father—the elders—they'll have you arrested for this!"

Dominic slowly reached into his pocket, pulling out a sleek tablet device, and tossed it onto the floor right in front of Ryker’s bleeding face.

"Check the news, little prince," Dominic said, a cold, ruthless smile touching his lips. "As of three minutes ago, the supernatural council has seized all Icefang corporate assets for match-fixing, embezzlement, and illegal border trafficking. Your father is currently in handcuffs. Your pack lands are legally being transferred to the Garcia estate to pay off your bankrupt debts."

Ryker stared at the screen, the glowing headlines reflecting in his icy blue eyes as his entire world, his title, and his future turned to absolute ash.

Dominic walked past him without a second glance, stopping right in front of me. He reached out, his massive hands cupping my face, his thumb softly wiping a stray smudge of dust from my cheek. The electric spark of the fated bond surged between us, warm, possessive, and deeply addictive.

"You're free, Elara," Dominic whispered, his eyes dark with a protective hunger that made my knees weak. "He can never touch you again."

But as I looked past Dominic’s shoulder, I saw Ryker's face contort into a hideous, hysterical mask of pure, suicidal madness. He reached into his hockey pants, his fingers wrapping around the hilt of a concealed, silver-plated wolf-bane blade.

"If I can't have the win title..." Ryker screamed, lunging from the floor directly toward Dominic's exposed back. "No one will!"

The final period was delayed. The arena was a powder keg, the air thick with the suffocating scent of aggressive Alpha auras clashing across the ice. Down the hall, the muffled shouting of Icefang officials arguing with the league executives echoed off the concrete walls.I stood in the cramped medical bay, my back pressed against the cold wall. Kaelen remained stationed at the door like a silent gargoyle of pure muscle, his dark eyes never leaving the corridor. Dominic and the twins had gone back out to the tunnel to deal with the refs, leaving me with Asher, who was currently leaning back on the examination table, his breathing finally leveling out under the soothing residue of our freshly ignited mate bond.Suddenly, a frantic commotion outside made Kaelen straighten. His hand dropped instinctively to his side, his posture shifting into a lethal, defensive stance."Let me through! I need to see her!"My heart stumbled. Chloe?"Let her in, Kaelen," I called out, my voice tight.Ka

The VIP box was a glass fortress overlooking a war zone. Down on the ice, the second period hadn’t just started; it had exploded. The referee’s whistle was completely drowned out by the bloodlust of the crowd and the brutal, metallic crunch of pads smashing into the plexiglass boards."Holy hell," Chloe whispered, her fingers gripping the brass railing of the suite so hard her knuckles turned white. "Dominic wasn’t lying. They are playing to kill."I couldn't answer. My throat was completely dry. I stood pressed against the glass, my eyes locked onto the black-and-silver streak that was Dominic Garcia. He was a force of pure, untamed destruction on the ice. Every time Ryker even touched the puck, Dominic was there, a towering shadow that slammed the Icefang prince into the boards with enough force to rattle the glass all the way up to our suite.Good, Lupine growled in my chest, her silver claws unsheathing in my mind. Let him shatter the boy who broke us and embarrassed us in front

The roar of the crowd outside the locker room walls was a deafening, rhythmic vibration that shook the very concrete beneath my sneakers. The Blackwood Reapers had just skate-shuffled down the tunnel for a quick intermission, but the atmosphere inside the away-team locker room was far from celebratory. It was thick with the copper scent of fresh blood, toxic testosterone, and a suffocating wall of Alpha pressure.I stood tucked away in the corner near the equipment trunks, still wrapped in the oversized black-and-silver Reapers hoodie Dominic had shoved into my hands before the puck dropped."Sit down, Vance!" Dominic’s voice didn't just command; it shattered the air. He ripped his helmet off, his dark hair plastered to his forehead with sweat, his silver eyes flashing a dangerous, luminescent white.Across the room, Asher slammed his goalie blocker against the metal benches, a rare, terrifying snarl ripping from his throat. The lazy, teasing smirk he usually wore at school was compl

Five pairs of eyes locked onto me.Time seemed to freeze in the crowded high school hallway. Dominic, standing at the center of the dangerous quintet, slowly let his lips curl into a lazy, devastating smirk. He lifted a hand, casually waving two fingers at me in a silent, possessive greeting. My heart did a violent flip. Heat surged up my neck, turning my cheeks a bright, furious crimson. Before I could think, before I could let those silver eyes trap me again, I spun on my heel, abandoned my fallen books, and sprinted down the hallway.I burst into the girls’ restroom, letting the heavy door slam shut behind me. Leaning against the cold tile wall, I pressed my hands to my burning face, trying to force air into my lungs. What are you doing?! Lupine roared in my mind, her inner wolf pacing with a wild, euphoric energy. Go back! Go back to them!"Are you insane?" I gasped aloud to the empty bathroom. "Lupine, what do you mean mates? Five of them? That’s impossible! Ryker was our fated

Dominic’s thumb froze against my bottom lip. The heavy warmth in his silver eyes evaporated in a split second, replaced by a cold, hard mask of sheer disbelief."You’ve got to be kidding me, right?" his voice was flat, dangerously quiet. He stared down at me as if waiting for me to laugh, to tell him it was all a sick joke.I shook my head, desperately clutching the velvet throw tighter around my shivering body. "I'm not kidding. I can't do this, Dominic. I want to go home. The deal is over.""The deal is over?" He scoffed, stepping back. The sudden loss of his body heat made me cold. He dragged a hand through his dark hair, a bitter, dark chuckle escaping his throat. "We haven't even started, Elara. Don’t you want revenge? Don't you want to watch Ryker crawl on his knees after what he did to you tonight?""I don't know!" I cried, the tears finally spilling over my lashes, hot and stinging. "I’m confused! He’s my fated mate, Dominic. The pain in my chest... it feels like I'm dying. I
