KATE’S POV

Déjà vu — the feeling that you’ve lived a moment before. Except this time, I’d dreamt it.

I woke up to find Asher in my room, his back to me as he stared out the balcony door.

I blinked, to make sure this wasn’t just another dream, but it wasn’t.

How long had he been standing there?

“Asher?” I called, but he didn't turn to me. “Asher!” I called again, and when he turned to me, the first thing I noticed was his hand. Which seemed to have been burnt.

My heart dropped when I realised he’d hurt himself—again.

“Why did you do this, Asher?” I questioned, tears filling my eyes.

“Because I prefer this type of pain—this type I can handle. But the other— the other is unfamiliar to me.”

I stood from the bed, taking his injured hands in mine.

“You have to stop hurting yourself.”

“I can’t help it.” He said, and when I looked into his eyes, all I saw was… emptiness.
