It was happening again. It started with a dull ringing in my head, growing louder and louder, and then the whispers began—voices muttering unintelligible words. It always begins like this, the urge comes next.

I picked up the opium pipe, taking a deep inhale. With each inhale the voice grew more silent, until it became nothing but a dull hum.

That’s when I realized someone was knocking.

“Come in,” I called and Liam let himself in. His gaze trailed to the opium pipe in my grip.

“You’ve been using a lot of that lately,” He noted out loud.

“So?”

He walked to me, placing the financial report I'd assigned him to work on down on the table.

“This has to stop,” he said.

“You really think I can make it through a day without it?” I questioned, even though I knew that wasn’t exactly what he was talking about.

He ran his hands through his hair, before finally facing me. “You should reject her. You had your fun, it was a new experience and it was exciting, but don’t you think it’s time
