I locked the apartment door behind me and leaned against it for a long moment before I trusted my legs to carry me further. The silence inside felt different now. Heavier. As if Elena’s voice had followed me home and settled into the walls.

Theo’s bedroom door was closed. I stood outside it for a few seconds and listened to the quiet sound of his breathing. He was asleep. For now that was enough. I walked to the kitchen, poured a glass of water I did not drink, and sat at the table with my phone face down in front of me.

The letter. The woman who was supposed to be dead. The debt that apparently still belonged to me. Every piece of information from the morning sat in my chest like something sharp. I kept replaying the calm way Elena had spoken about my father and the gaps in my own memory. The idea that there were nights I could not remember made my skin feel too tight.

I opened my laptop and typed her name the way I remembered it from the old photographs. Nothing useful came up. I tried variations. Still nothing. Whoever Elena was, she had been careful about remaining a ghost. That fact alone made her more dangerous.

My phone lit up with a message from Riven.

Tomorrow night will be different. Come prepared to answer questions. And Nora — do not try to research her. You will not like what finds you first.

I stared at the screen. He always seemed to know what I was doing even when he was not in the room. The thought should have made me angry. Instead it left a low, complicated heat under my skin that I refused to name.

I closed the laptop and went to bed. Sleep came in fragments. In one of them I was twelve again, standing in a hallway listening to my father argue with a woman whose face I could not quite see. In another I was writing something at a desk while someone stood behind me and guided my hand. I woke before dawn with my heart racing and the taste of panic in my mouth.

Theo was already awake when I entered the kitchen. He watched me carefully as I made coffee.

You did not sleep, he said.

I slept enough.

He set his mug down. That woman you met yesterday. I heard you talking to yourself about her when you came in. Who is she?

I kept my eyes on the coffee. Someone connected to Dad. That is all.

Theo’s expression tightened. Dad is dead. Why is someone connected to him still causing problems?

Because some debts survive the people who created them, I said. I need you to trust me a little longer.

He looked like he wanted to argue. Instead he nodded once and left the kitchen. The quiet he left behind felt heavier than before.

The day moved too slowly. I tried to work and failed. I tried to eat and failed at that too. Every time my phone buzzed I expected Riven’s name, but the messages were only from Mira asking if I was free to talk. I ignored them. There was nothing safe I could tell her yet.

When evening finally arrived I dressed in the same simple way Riven preferred and left the apartment before Theo could ask where I was going. The drive to the familiar building felt shorter than usual. My pulse was already elevated by the time I reached the door.

Riven opened it before I could knock. He looked the same as always — controlled, focused, dressed in black. The moment our eyes met the air between us shifted.

You came early, he said.

I wanted to get it over with.

He stepped aside. That is not how this works.

I walked into the room and heard the door close behind me. The space looked the same as it had on the first night, but everything about it felt different now that I knew Elena was watching from somewhere beyond it.

Riven walked past me and stopped near the window. He did not tell me to undress. He did not tell me to kneel. He simply watched me for a long moment.

Tell me what you thought about after you left Elena’s apartment, he said.

I thought about how many things my father lied about.

And?

I thought about the letter. And the gaps in my memory. And the fact that you knew who she was the entire time.

Riven nodded once. Good. You are asking better questions now.

I crossed my arms. Are you working for her?

I work with people when it is useful, he said. That is not the same thing.

It feels the same from where I am standing.

Then adjust where you are standing.

He walked toward me slowly. The closer he came the harder it became to keep my breathing even. He stopped just close enough that I could feel the heat of his body.

Night four is not about your body, he said. Not yet. Tonight is about honesty. Elena wants to know how much of the truth you can carry without breaking. So do I.

I held his gaze. And if I cannot carry it?

Then we will find out what happens next together.

He gestured toward the chair near the desk. Sit down. We are going to talk about the night you wrote that letter. And you are going to stop pretending you remember nothing.

I sat. My hands felt cold. Riven took the chair opposite me and leaned forward slightly, elbows resting on his knees.

Start with what you do remember, he said. Even the pieces that do not make sense.

I opened my mouth to tell him I remembered nothing. Then the first fragment surfaced without permission — the smell of cigarette smoke, a desk lamp, a hand resting over mine as a pen moved across paper. My stomach turned.

Riven watched the change in my face with quiet attention.

There, he said. That is the beginning. Keep going.

I stared at him while the room suddenly felt smaller and the past felt far too close. Somewhere outside this building Elena was waiting to see whether I would break under the weight of what I was about to remember. And Riven was going to sit there and watch every second of it.

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 19: The Favor

The building Riven stopped in front of looked ordinary from the street. Too ordinary. A low office structure with darkened windows and a side entrance that required a code. He entered the numbers without hesitation and held the door for me. The hallway inside smelled of dust and old paper. Our footsteps sounded too loud in the quiet.I kept my voice low. "Who is this person?""Someone who used to move money for people who preferred not to leave clean records, Riven said. He also used to work with Hale. That combination makes him useful and unstable in equal measure. Do not trust his manners. Trust the fact that he still owes me something he cannot afford to leave unpaid."We took a narrow staircase to the second floor. Riven knocked once on a plain wooden door. A moment later it opened. The man who stood there was older than Riven, with gray at his temples and the kind of eyes that measured everything in risk. He looked at me first, then at Riven, then back at me again."You brought c

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 18: The Message Leaves

I woke before the sun with the envelope still in the jacket I had thrown over the chair. For a long moment I lay still and listened to the quiet of the apartment, half expecting the decision I had made in that dark lot to feel smaller in daylight. It did not. If anything it felt heavier.Theo was already in the kitchen when I walked in. He watched me pour coffee without speaking. The distance from the night before was still there, but something in his expression had shifted. He looked less like he was waiting for permission and more like he was measuring how much longer he could tolerate the silence."You left again last night," he said."I did.""With him.""Yes."Theo set his cup down carefully. "I keep trying to decide whether you are protecting me or protecting yourself from having to admit how deep this is. I still have not decided."I met his eyes. "Both can be true at the same time."He held my gaze for another second, then nodded once and left for class. The door closed quietl

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 17 : The Envelope

I sat in the passenger seat with the envelope resting in my lap and the low hum of the engine filling the silence. Riven did not rush me. He simply watched the empty lot through the windshield as if he had all the time in the world. The patience felt deliberate. It always did.I turned the envelope over once without opening it. The paper was thick. Expensive. The kind of detail that made everything feel more calculated."You expect me to trust you with this," I said."I expect you to decide whether the alternative is worse," he replied. "Elena already knows you have been digging. She will not wait much longer before she tightens the pressure on Theo to remind you of your place. Victor Hale is one of the few remaining people who can make her position less clean. That is useful. It is also dangerous. Both things can be true at the same time."I looked at his profile. The scar on his knuckle was visible again under the dashboard light. I still did not know the story behind it. The not kn

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 16: Different Directions

I sat in the dark kitchen long after Riven dropped me off, still wearing the clothes I had put back on in that quiet room. My body ached in places that felt too intimate to name, but the physical marks were not what kept me awake. It was the sentence he had left me with.Elena is collecting a debt. I am collecting something else.I kept turning the words over, trying to force them into a shape I could use. The idea that Riven might not be fully aligned with Elena should have brought relief. Instead it only created a new kind of unease. A man who admitted he was collecting something from me while still delivering me into her plans was not safer. He was simply harder to predict.Theo’s door opened around two in the morning. He stood in the hallway and looked at me for a long time before he spoke."You did not come home the same," he said."I rarely do anymore."He walked into the kitchen and sat across from me. The low light from the street made his face look younger and older at the sa

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 15: The Doorway

I walked through the doorway.I hated that I did it without more of a fight. I hated the way my pulse climbed as I crossed the threshold and heard Riven close the door behind us. The room beyond was larger than the others, dimly lit, with wide windows that showed the city like a scattered field of lights. There was a bed. There was a chair. There was enough open space to make the quiet feel intentional.Riven stayed near the door for a moment and watched me."You are angry," he said."I am past angry.""Good. Anger is clearer than fear. It makes the truth harder to hide."I turned to face him fully. "You keep talking about truth as if you are the only one allowed to define it. You knew about Elena. You knew about the second document. You knew about the gaps in my memory. And you still let me walk into every one of these nights believing the contract was the main cage.""It was never the main cage,"he said. "You needed time to see that for yourself.""And now that I have seen it? What

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 14: What the Nights Are For

I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes I saw my own signature at the bottom of that document and felt Elena’s hand over mine again. The anger sat in my chest like something alive. By the time morning light pushed through the curtains I was already awake and exhausted at the same time.Theo was in the kitchen when I walked in. He took one look at my face and set his mug down harder than necessary."You look worse than yesterday," he said. "Whatever that man is doing to you is getting heavier. I can see it."I poured coffee I did not want. "Leave it alone, Theo.""I am done leaving it alone. You come home later and later. You flinch when your phone lights up. You look at me like you are measuring how much truth I can carry. I am not fragile. Stop treating me like I will break if you tell me the real shape of this."The frustration in his voice scraped against the raw places already open inside me. I turned on him before I could stop myself."You want the real shape? Fine. Dad left
