Chapter 13: The Weight of a Signature

The moment the unmarked door closed behind us the air changed. It was quieter than the usual room, heavier somehow, as if the walls themselves were waiting. My pulse was already too fast. I could feel it in my throat and in the tips of my fingers. Riven walked ahead of me without looking back, and for a second I hated how easily he moved through spaces that made me feel like I was drowning.

I stopped in the middle of the room.

I am tired of being led into places without knowing what is waiting for me.

Riven turned. The low light caught the edge of his face. Then stop following, he said. You still have that choice. It simply comes with consequences you have already seen.

The reminder of Theo in that chair sat between us like a third person. My stomach twisted. I looked away first.

He walked to a small table near the far wall and unlocked a black folder. The sound of the clasp opening made my shoulders tighten. He did not hand it to me immediately. He held it and watched my face instead.

"You are allowed to be angry," he said. "You are even allowed to hate me for this. What you are not allowed to do is pretend you are only a victim of other people’s plans. You signed things. You survived by signing them. That has a cost."

I laughed once, short and sharp. "Do not lecture me about cost. I have been paying since I was nineteen."

"Then look at the rest of the bill."

He held the folder out. My hands did not feel like my own when I took it. The paper inside was older than the letter. The ink had faded slightly at the edges. My signature sat at the bottom in the same handwriting I still used. Above it were paragraphs of language that made the floor feel unstable.

I read the first page twice. Then the second. By the third my vision had blurred at the edges.

She can take control of what is left of my father’s estate if I am declared unfit, I said. My voice sounded distant to my own ears. She can make decisions about Theo’s care if something happens to me. She can—

"Yes,"Riven said.

I looked up at him. The emotion that rose in my chest was so strong it made my hands shake. "Why would you show me this? Why not let her spring it on me when it was too late to fight?"

Because I needed you to stop walking into these nights half asleep, he said. Fear makes people obedient for a while. Understanding makes them dangerous in ways that are more useful.

"Useful to who?"

To the version of this that ends with you still standing, he said. Elena is not interested in your survival beyond what it provides her. I am still deciding what I am interested in.

The honesty in his voice landed harder than any threat. I closed the folder and held it against my chest as if I could keep the words from being real by sheer force.

"I want a copy," I said.

"No."

"I need to know exactly what I signed."

"You already know enough. A copy would only give you the illusion of control. Illusions are dangerous when Elena is involved."

My eyes burned. I refused to let the tears move further than that. I had cried enough over my father’s secrets. I would not cry over this in front of him.

Riven stepped closer. The space between us shrank until I could smell the familiar scent of his skin and the cold night air that still clung to his coat. My body reacted before my mind could stop it. The same unwanted pull. The same low heat. I hated it and I hated that he could probably see it.

"You are shaking," he said quietly.

"I am furious."

"That too."

He reached out and took the folder from my hands. His fingers brushed mine. The contact was brief but it sent a current straight up my arm. We both noticed. Neither of us moved away immediately.

"Night five is not finished,"he said. You have seen the document. Now we discuss what it means for the nights that remain.

What does it mean?

It means Elena wants proof that you are still compliant. It means the next nights will not be only about your body or your obedience. They will be about how much of your past you are willing to face without breaking. And it means I will be the one deciding when you have faced enough.

I stared at him. The anger and the fear and the complicated heat all sat in my chest at once. I could not separate them anymore.

"And if I break?"

Riven’s eyes held mine. Then I will decide whether to hand the pieces to Elena or keep them myself.

The words should have terrified me. They did. But underneath the fear something else moved — a sharp, unwilling understanding that the contract had never been the real cage. The real cage was older, quieter, and already locked around my life before I ever signed my name for one hundred nights.

Riven stepped back and nodded toward the door.

"We are leaving. You will go home. You will not speak to Theo about this document. And when I contact you for night six you will come prepared to remember more than you want to."

I walked past him into the night with the weight of my own signature pressing against my ribs. The car ride back was silent. When he stopped outside my building I reached for the door handle, then paused.

"One question," I said.

He waited.

"If Elena already has so much power over me, why does she still need the hundred nights? Why involve you at all?"

Riven looked at me for a long time. The streetlight cut across his face and made his expression impossible to read.

"Because the nights are not for her, he said. Not entirely."

Then he leaned across me and pushed the door open.

"Go inside, Nora. Lock the door. And try not to dream about the parts of yourself you are only beginning to meet."

I stepped out onto the sidewalk. The car pulled away before I could ask what he meant. I stood there with the cold night air on my face and the sick certainty that the most dangerous person in this arrangement might no longer be Elena.

It might be the man who had just spoken as if the hundred nights belonged to him in a way I had never fully understood.

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 19: The Favor

The building Riven stopped in front of looked ordinary from the street. Too ordinary. A low office structure with darkened windows and a side entrance that required a code. He entered the numbers without hesitation and held the door for me. The hallway inside smelled of dust and old paper. Our footsteps sounded too loud in the quiet.I kept my voice low. "Who is this person?""Someone who used to move money for people who preferred not to leave clean records, Riven said. He also used to work with Hale. That combination makes him useful and unstable in equal measure. Do not trust his manners. Trust the fact that he still owes me something he cannot afford to leave unpaid."We took a narrow staircase to the second floor. Riven knocked once on a plain wooden door. A moment later it opened. The man who stood there was older than Riven, with gray at his temples and the kind of eyes that measured everything in risk. He looked at me first, then at Riven, then back at me again."You brought c

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 18: The Message Leaves

I woke before the sun with the envelope still in the jacket I had thrown over the chair. For a long moment I lay still and listened to the quiet of the apartment, half expecting the decision I had made in that dark lot to feel smaller in daylight. It did not. If anything it felt heavier.Theo was already in the kitchen when I walked in. He watched me pour coffee without speaking. The distance from the night before was still there, but something in his expression had shifted. He looked less like he was waiting for permission and more like he was measuring how much longer he could tolerate the silence."You left again last night," he said."I did.""With him.""Yes."Theo set his cup down carefully. "I keep trying to decide whether you are protecting me or protecting yourself from having to admit how deep this is. I still have not decided."I met his eyes. "Both can be true at the same time."He held my gaze for another second, then nodded once and left for class. The door closed quietl

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 17 : The Envelope

I sat in the passenger seat with the envelope resting in my lap and the low hum of the engine filling the silence. Riven did not rush me. He simply watched the empty lot through the windshield as if he had all the time in the world. The patience felt deliberate. It always did.I turned the envelope over once without opening it. The paper was thick. Expensive. The kind of detail that made everything feel more calculated."You expect me to trust you with this," I said."I expect you to decide whether the alternative is worse," he replied. "Elena already knows you have been digging. She will not wait much longer before she tightens the pressure on Theo to remind you of your place. Victor Hale is one of the few remaining people who can make her position less clean. That is useful. It is also dangerous. Both things can be true at the same time."I looked at his profile. The scar on his knuckle was visible again under the dashboard light. I still did not know the story behind it. The not kn

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 16: Different Directions

I sat in the dark kitchen long after Riven dropped me off, still wearing the clothes I had put back on in that quiet room. My body ached in places that felt too intimate to name, but the physical marks were not what kept me awake. It was the sentence he had left me with.Elena is collecting a debt. I am collecting something else.I kept turning the words over, trying to force them into a shape I could use. The idea that Riven might not be fully aligned with Elena should have brought relief. Instead it only created a new kind of unease. A man who admitted he was collecting something from me while still delivering me into her plans was not safer. He was simply harder to predict.Theo’s door opened around two in the morning. He stood in the hallway and looked at me for a long time before he spoke."You did not come home the same," he said."I rarely do anymore."He walked into the kitchen and sat across from me. The low light from the street made his face look younger and older at the sa

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 15: The Doorway

I walked through the doorway.I hated that I did it without more of a fight. I hated the way my pulse climbed as I crossed the threshold and heard Riven close the door behind us. The room beyond was larger than the others, dimly lit, with wide windows that showed the city like a scattered field of lights. There was a bed. There was a chair. There was enough open space to make the quiet feel intentional.Riven stayed near the door for a moment and watched me."You are angry," he said."I am past angry.""Good. Anger is clearer than fear. It makes the truth harder to hide."I turned to face him fully. "You keep talking about truth as if you are the only one allowed to define it. You knew about Elena. You knew about the second document. You knew about the gaps in my memory. And you still let me walk into every one of these nights believing the contract was the main cage.""It was never the main cage,"he said. "You needed time to see that for yourself.""And now that I have seen it? What

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 14: What the Nights Are For

I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes I saw my own signature at the bottom of that document and felt Elena’s hand over mine again. The anger sat in my chest like something alive. By the time morning light pushed through the curtains I was already awake and exhausted at the same time.Theo was in the kitchen when I walked in. He took one look at my face and set his mug down harder than necessary."You look worse than yesterday," he said. "Whatever that man is doing to you is getting heavier. I can see it."I poured coffee I did not want. "Leave it alone, Theo.""I am done leaving it alone. You come home later and later. You flinch when your phone lights up. You look at me like you are measuring how much truth I can carry. I am not fragile. Stop treating me like I will break if you tell me the real shape of this."The frustration in his voice scraped against the raw places already open inside me. I turned on him before I could stop myself."You want the real shape? Fine. Dad left
