Chapter 12: The Second Document

I drove home with the windows down even though the night air was cold. I needed the discomfort. It kept me from drifting too far into the memory of Elena’s hand over mine and the quiet command that had forced the letter into existence. The second document sat in my mind like a live wire. I did not know its exact words yet, but the shape of it was already clear enough to make my stomach turn.

Theo was awake when I entered the apartment. He sat on the couch with his sketchbook closed and his arms crossed. The moment he saw my face his expression changed.

"Something happened again," he said.

I set my keys down carefully. Go to bed, Theo.

"No. Not this time. You come home looking like someone told you the walls were about to collapse and then you tell me to sleep. I am done waiting for explanations that never come."

I looked at him for a long moment. He was no longer the quiet boy who accepted half answers. The night he spent in that industrial room had changed something in him too.

"There are things connected to Dad that I am still trying to understand," I said. "When I know enough to explain them without putting you at more risk, I will."

Theo stood. "That man took me and made you sit across from me all night. A woman who was supposed to be dead is suddenly part of this. And you expect me to keep accepting that I am safer in the dark."

I did not have a clean answer. The truth was that I no longer knew how far the danger reached or who else might be watching. I only knew that every new piece of information made the original contract feel smaller than what was actually happening.

"I will tell you when I can," i said. "That is the best I can offer right now."

Theo stared at me for another few seconds before he walked to his room and closed the door harder than necessary. The sound left a sharp quiet behind it.

I sat at the kitchen table and opened my laptop again. This time I did not search for Elena’s name. I searched for old business records connected to my father. Most of the files were incomplete or sealed. A few mentions of consulting agreements and private loans appeared, but nothing that directly named her. Whoever had cleaned the trail had been thorough.

My phone vibrated. Riven’s name lit the screen.

"You are still awake."

"So are you," I replied.

"Did you try to find the second document online?"

I stared at the message. Of course he knew.

"There is nothing to find, he wrote. Elena keeps physical copies. The only version you will see is the one she decides to show you."

"Then show it to me."

" Night five," he answered. "Be ready to discuss terms. And Nora — stop digging for now. You are not the only person who notices patterns."

I set the phone down and pressed my palms against my eyes. The apartment felt too small. The knowledge that Elena held a document with my signature giving her power over decisions about Theo made every protective instinct I had look insufficient.

I tried to sleep and failed. The fragments from the night of the letter kept returning. The desk lamp. The smoke. The pressure of her hand. The quiet certainty in her voice when she told me to keep writing. Somewhere in those missing hours I had signed away more than a confession. I had signed away future choices I did not even know I still had.

Morning arrived without relief. Theo left early for a class and did not say goodbye. The silence he left behind felt deliberate. I spent the day moving through ordinary tasks that no longer felt ordinary. Every time the phone rang I expected Riven or worse. The calls were only from Mira. I let them go to voicemail. There was no version of the truth I could offer her that would not pull her into something she could not handle.

By late afternoon the message I had been waiting for finally arrived.

I will pick you up at eight. Do not be late. Tonight you will see the second document. After that we will discuss what it means for the remaining nights.

I read the message twice. The wording was careful. Riven never wasted language. If he said we would discuss what the document meant for the remaining nights, then the original terms of the contract were about to shift again.

I dressed in dark clothes and waited by the window as the sky turned from blue to black. When the black car pulled up outside the building I felt the familiar tightening in my chest. I locked the apartment and walked down the stairs with the knowledge that every step was carrying me closer to a piece of paper that could rewrite the rest of my life.

Riven opened the passenger door from the inside. I sat down and closed it behind me. The quiet of the car settled around us.

"You look like you have been thinking too much," he said.

"I have been remembering too much."

"That is not the same thing."

"It feels the same from the inside."

He pulled into traffic and did not speak again until we had left my neighborhood behind. The city lights moved across his face in short intervals. The scar on his knuckle caught the light once and then disappeared.

"Elena will not be present tonight,"he said. "This conversation is between us first. She wants a report afterward."

"And if I refuse to discuss the document?"

"Then I will tell her you are not ready,"he said. "And she will decide what ready looks like for you. You will like my version better."

I turned my head and studied his profile. "Why do you keep acting as if you are protecting me from her when you are the one delivering me to every new piece of this?"

Riven’s hands stayed steady on the wheel. Because protection and control are not always different things. You will understand that more clearly after you read the document.

He turned into a quieter street and parked in front of a low brick building I did not recognize. The windows were dark. The entrance was unmarked.

We are not going to the usual room, I said.

"No,"he answered. Tonight requires privacy of a different kind.

He stepped out of the car and waited for me on the sidewalk. The night air felt colder than it should have. I followed him toward the door while the weight of the second document pressed against the back of my mind, still unseen but already heavy enough to change the shape of everything that came next.

The building Riven stopped in front of looked ordinary from the street. Too ordinary. A low office structure with darkened windows and a side entrance that required a code. He entered the numbers without hesitation and held the door for me. The hallway inside smelled of dust and old paper. Our footsteps sounded too loud in the quiet.I kept my voice low. "Who is this person?""Someone who used to move money for people who preferred not to leave clean records, Riven said. He also used to work with Hale. That combination makes him useful and unstable in equal measure. Do not trust his manners. Trust the fact that he still owes me something he cannot afford to leave unpaid."We took a narrow staircase to the second floor. Riven knocked once on a plain wooden door. A moment later it opened. The man who stood there was older than Riven, with gray at his temples and the kind of eyes that measured everything in risk. He looked at me first, then at Riven, then back at me again."You brought c

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 18: The Message Leaves

I woke before the sun with the envelope still in the jacket I had thrown over the chair. For a long moment I lay still and listened to the quiet of the apartment, half expecting the decision I had made in that dark lot to feel smaller in daylight. It did not. If anything it felt heavier.Theo was already in the kitchen when I walked in. He watched me pour coffee without speaking. The distance from the night before was still there, but something in his expression had shifted. He looked less like he was waiting for permission and more like he was measuring how much longer he could tolerate the silence."You left again last night," he said."I did.""With him.""Yes."Theo set his cup down carefully. "I keep trying to decide whether you are protecting me or protecting yourself from having to admit how deep this is. I still have not decided."I met his eyes. "Both can be true at the same time."He held my gaze for another second, then nodded once and left for class. The door closed quietl

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 17 : The Envelope

I sat in the passenger seat with the envelope resting in my lap and the low hum of the engine filling the silence. Riven did not rush me. He simply watched the empty lot through the windshield as if he had all the time in the world. The patience felt deliberate. It always did.I turned the envelope over once without opening it. The paper was thick. Expensive. The kind of detail that made everything feel more calculated."You expect me to trust you with this," I said."I expect you to decide whether the alternative is worse," he replied. "Elena already knows you have been digging. She will not wait much longer before she tightens the pressure on Theo to remind you of your place. Victor Hale is one of the few remaining people who can make her position less clean. That is useful. It is also dangerous. Both things can be true at the same time."I looked at his profile. The scar on his knuckle was visible again under the dashboard light. I still did not know the story behind it. The not kn

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 16: Different Directions

I sat in the dark kitchen long after Riven dropped me off, still wearing the clothes I had put back on in that quiet room. My body ached in places that felt too intimate to name, but the physical marks were not what kept me awake. It was the sentence he had left me with.Elena is collecting a debt. I am collecting something else.I kept turning the words over, trying to force them into a shape I could use. The idea that Riven might not be fully aligned with Elena should have brought relief. Instead it only created a new kind of unease. A man who admitted he was collecting something from me while still delivering me into her plans was not safer. He was simply harder to predict.Theo’s door opened around two in the morning. He stood in the hallway and looked at me for a long time before he spoke."You did not come home the same," he said."I rarely do anymore."He walked into the kitchen and sat across from me. The low light from the street made his face look younger and older at the sa

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 15: The Doorway

I walked through the doorway.I hated that I did it without more of a fight. I hated the way my pulse climbed as I crossed the threshold and heard Riven close the door behind us. The room beyond was larger than the others, dimly lit, with wide windows that showed the city like a scattered field of lights. There was a bed. There was a chair. There was enough open space to make the quiet feel intentional.Riven stayed near the door for a moment and watched me."You are angry," he said."I am past angry.""Good. Anger is clearer than fear. It makes the truth harder to hide."I turned to face him fully. "You keep talking about truth as if you are the only one allowed to define it. You knew about Elena. You knew about the second document. You knew about the gaps in my memory. And you still let me walk into every one of these nights believing the contract was the main cage.""It was never the main cage,"he said. "You needed time to see that for yourself.""And now that I have seen it? What

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 14: What the Nights Are For

I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes I saw my own signature at the bottom of that document and felt Elena’s hand over mine again. The anger sat in my chest like something alive. By the time morning light pushed through the curtains I was already awake and exhausted at the same time.Theo was in the kitchen when I walked in. He took one look at my face and set his mug down harder than necessary."You look worse than yesterday," he said. "Whatever that man is doing to you is getting heavier. I can see it."I poured coffee I did not want. "Leave it alone, Theo.""I am done leaving it alone. You come home later and later. You flinch when your phone lights up. You look at me like you are measuring how much truth I can carry. I am not fragile. Stop treating me like I will break if you tell me the real shape of this."The frustration in his voice scraped against the raw places already open inside me. I turned on him before I could stop myself."You want the real shape? Fine. Dad left
