Chapter 17 : The Envelope

I sat in the passenger seat with the envelope resting in my lap and the low hum of the engine filling the silence. Riven did not rush me. He simply watched the empty lot through the windshield as if he had all the time in the world. The patience felt deliberate. It always did.

I turned the envelope over once without opening it. The paper was thick. Expensive. The kind of detail that made everything feel more calculated.

"You expect me to trust you with this," I said.

"I expect you to decide whether the alternative is worse," he replied. "Elena already knows you have been digging. She will not wait much longer before she tightens the pressure on Theo to remind you of your place. Victor Hale is one of the few remaining people who can make her position less clean. That is useful. It is also dangerous. Both things can be true at the same time."

I looked at his profile. The scar on his knuckle was visible again under the dashboard light. I still did not know the story behind it. The not knowing bothered me more than it should have.

"If I agree to move on this, what do you gain?"

Riven was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "I gain a clearer view of who you become when you stop only reacting. That view is worth the risk to me. Whether it is worth the risk to you is a different question."

The honesty in his voice landed harder than a lie would have. I hated that it made something in my chest tighten. I hated that part of me wanted to believe him even while the rest of me counted every way this could destroy what was left of my life with Theo.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single card with an address, a name, and a short set of instructions written in precise handwriting. Victor Hale. A private office in a part of the city I rarely visited. Contact only through a specific channel. No direct approach. No mentions of Elena by name in the first communication.

I read it twice. The simplicity of it made the danger feel more real.

"He will not speak to me without you,"I said.

"Correct."

"And if Elena finds out we contacted him?"

"Then the remaining nights become much shorter and far less controlled," Riven said. "That is the line we are walking."

I closed the envelope and held it tightly. The choice sat in front of me with no clean edges. Protect Theo by staying obedient and hoping Elena’s timeline did not crush us. Or move against her with the only person who had given me any real leverage, knowing that person still had his own unfinished reasons for helping.

I looked at Riven fully. "If I do this and you are lying about your distance from Elena, Theo is the one who pays first."

"I am aware."

"Then understand that if you use this to hurt him, I will find a way to make the cost higher than you expect."

Something that was not quite a smile touched the corner of his mouth. There. That is the version I have been waiting to see more clearly.

He put the car in gear and pulled out of the lot. The city lights moved across the windows in long streaks. I watched them without speaking while the weight of the envelope settled into my awareness like a second pulse.

We did not drive to the usual building. Riven took a longer route through quieter streets and eventually stopped in front of a small residential property with no visible number on the gate. The windows were dark. The street was empty.

"Where are we?"

"A neutral place," he said. "Hale will not meet in public, and I will not bring you to his office until the first contact is clean. Tonight we prepare the message and the terms. Tomorrow the message goes out. After that we wait for the response and decide how far to push."

He stepped out of the car. I followed him through the gate and up a short path to the front door. He unlocked it with a key I had not seen him use before. The interior was sparsely furnished and quiet. It felt temporary, like a place meant for conversations that needed to stay off larger maps.

Riven turned on a single lamp and gestured toward the table in the center of the room. Sit.

I sat. He took the chair across from me and placed a second, smaller envelope on the table between us.

This contains the exact wording of the first contact, he said. You will read it. You will understand every line before it is sent. If you want changes, we discuss them now. Once the message leaves, we do not get to pull it back.

I opened the second envelope and read the short paragraph inside. The language was careful. It referenced secondary agreements from a specific year without naming Elena. It requested confirmation that certain copies still existed. It offered a limited exchange of information in return.

My hands were steady when I finished reading, but the rest of me was not.

"This will reach him tomorrow," I said.

"Yes."

"And then we wait."

"Yes. Waiting is the part most people underestimate. Elena will notice the disturbance even if she cannot immediately trace it. That means the next nights may become more demanding. She will want reassurance that you are still under control."

I met his eyes. "And you will give her that reassurance."

I will give her enough to keep the original structure intact while we work the pressure point, he said. That is the balance. It is not comfortable. It is simply necessary.

The quiet between us stretched. Outside the house the street remained empty. Inside, the single lamp made the edges of the room feel closer than they were. I could feel the familiar pull of his presence even now, tangled with the fear and the anger and the sharp new focus that had started to form since he placed the first envelope in my hand.

Riven leaned forward slightly.

Last chance to walk away from this particular path, he said. You can burn both envelopes. You can return to the original rhythm of the nights and hope Elena’s patience lasts longer than her ambition. I will not force this move.

I looked down at the two envelopes on the table. One held the location of a man who might weaken Elena’s hold. The other held the first words that would set that possibility in motion. Between them sat the reality of Theo asleep in our apartment and the second document that still carried my signature from a night I had only begun to remember.

I pushed the second envelope back toward Riven.

"Send it,"I said.

He studied my face for a long moment. Then he nodded once and placed the envelope in his coat pocket.

"Night seven is finished," he said. "Tomorrow the real risk begins. When Hale responds, we will move. Until then you will continue the nights as scheduled and you will give Elena no reason to accelerate further. Can you do that?"

"I can try."

"Trying is not the standard. Doing is."

He stood and walked me back to the car in silence. The drive to my building felt shorter than the drive out. When he stopped at the curb he did not immediately unlock the doors.

"One more thing,"he said. "If Elena contacts you directly again, you tell me before you answer. If Theo asks more questions, you give him nothing that leads back to Hale or the secondary agreements. And if you start to regret this decision in the morning, you live with it. There is no clean reverse once the message is out."

I opened the door and stepped onto the sidewalk. The night air felt colder than before. I leaned down slightly and looked at him through the open door.

"What are you really collecting from me, Riven?"

He held my gaze without blinking.

"The answer is still forming," he said. "When it is complete, you will not need to ask."

Then he closed the door and drove away, leaving me on the sidewalk with the first envelope still in my jacket pocket and the knowledge that the next move against Elena had already been set in motion, whether I was ready for the consequences or not.

The building Riven stopped in front of looked ordinary from the street. Too ordinary. A low office structure with darkened windows and a side entrance that required a code. He entered the numbers without hesitation and held the door for me. The hallway inside smelled of dust and old paper. Our footsteps sounded too loud in the quiet.I kept my voice low. "Who is this person?""Someone who used to move money for people who preferred not to leave clean records, Riven said. He also used to work with Hale. That combination makes him useful and unstable in equal measure. Do not trust his manners. Trust the fact that he still owes me something he cannot afford to leave unpaid."We took a narrow staircase to the second floor. Riven knocked once on a plain wooden door. A moment later it opened. The man who stood there was older than Riven, with gray at his temples and the kind of eyes that measured everything in risk. He looked at me first, then at Riven, then back at me again."You brought c

I woke before the sun with the envelope still in the jacket I had thrown over the chair. For a long moment I lay still and listened to the quiet of the apartment, half expecting the decision I had made in that dark lot to feel smaller in daylight. It did not. If anything it felt heavier.Theo was already in the kitchen when I walked in. He watched me pour coffee without speaking. The distance from the night before was still there, but something in his expression had shifted. He looked less like he was waiting for permission and more like he was measuring how much longer he could tolerate the silence."You left again last night," he said."I did.""With him.""Yes."Theo set his cup down carefully. "I keep trying to decide whether you are protecting me or protecting yourself from having to admit how deep this is. I still have not decided."I met his eyes. "Both can be true at the same time."He held my gaze for another second, then nodded once and left for class. The door closed quietl

I sat in the dark kitchen long after Riven dropped me off, still wearing the clothes I had put back on in that quiet room. My body ached in places that felt too intimate to name, but the physical marks were not what kept me awake. It was the sentence he had left me with.Elena is collecting a debt. I am collecting something else.I kept turning the words over, trying to force them into a shape I could use. The idea that Riven might not be fully aligned with Elena should have brought relief. Instead it only created a new kind of unease. A man who admitted he was collecting something from me while still delivering me into her plans was not safer. He was simply harder to predict.Theo’s door opened around two in the morning. He stood in the hallway and looked at me for a long time before he spoke."You did not come home the same," he said."I rarely do anymore."He walked into the kitchen and sat across from me. The low light from the street made his face look younger and older at the sa

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 15: The Doorway

I walked through the doorway.I hated that I did it without more of a fight. I hated the way my pulse climbed as I crossed the threshold and heard Riven close the door behind us. The room beyond was larger than the others, dimly lit, with wide windows that showed the city like a scattered field of lights. There was a bed. There was a chair. There was enough open space to make the quiet feel intentional.Riven stayed near the door for a moment and watched me."You are angry," he said."I am past angry.""Good. Anger is clearer than fear. It makes the truth harder to hide."I turned to face him fully. "You keep talking about truth as if you are the only one allowed to define it. You knew about Elena. You knew about the second document. You knew about the gaps in my memory. And you still let me walk into every one of these nights believing the contract was the main cage.""It was never the main cage,"he said. "You needed time to see that for yourself.""And now that I have seen it? What

I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes I saw my own signature at the bottom of that document and felt Elena’s hand over mine again. The anger sat in my chest like something alive. By the time morning light pushed through the curtains I was already awake and exhausted at the same time.Theo was in the kitchen when I walked in. He took one look at my face and set his mug down harder than necessary."You look worse than yesterday," he said. "Whatever that man is doing to you is getting heavier. I can see it."I poured coffee I did not want. "Leave it alone, Theo.""I am done leaving it alone. You come home later and later. You flinch when your phone lights up. You look at me like you are measuring how much truth I can carry. I am not fragile. Stop treating me like I will break if you tell me the real shape of this."The frustration in his voice scraped against the raw places already open inside me. I turned on him before I could stop myself."You want the real shape? Fine. Dad left
