The building Riven stopped in front of looked ordinary from the street. Too ordinary. A low office structure with darkened windows and a side entrance that required a code. He entered the numbers without hesitation and held the door for me. The hallway inside smelled of dust and old paper. Our footsteps sounded too loud in the quiet.

I kept my voice low. "Who is this person?"

"Someone who used to move money for people who preferred not to leave clean records, Riven said. He also used to work with Hale. That combination makes him useful and unstable in equal measure. Do not trust his manners. Trust the fact that he still owes me something he cannot afford to leave unpaid."

We took a narrow staircase to the second floor. Riven knocked once on a plain wooden door. A moment later it opened.

The man who stood there was older than Riven, with gray at his temples and the kind of eyes that measured everything in risk. He looked at me first, then at Riven, then back at me again.

"You brought company," he said.

"She is part of the conversation," Riven replied. Let us in.

The man stepped aside. The room beyond was sparsely furnished: a desk, two chairs, a single lamp, and a wall of filing cabinets that looked older than the building itself. He closed the door and locked it.

"Nora," Riven said, "this is Daniel Crowe. Daniel, this is the woman whose signature sits on documents Elena still uses."

Crowe’s expression did not change, but something in his posture sharpened. He walked to the desk and sat on the edge of it rather than behind it.

"You are taking risks I would not take,"he said to Riven. "Elena has a long memory and a short tolerance for interference."

"She also has gaps in her records," Riven said. "Gaps you can confirm. That is all I need from you tonight."

Crowe looked at me again. "You understand what you are walking into?"

"I understand that the documents I signed years ago are still controlling the shape of my life," I said." I understand that Elena is accelerating her timeline. And I understand that standing still will not protect my brother. If you have information that changes any of that, I need to hear it."

Something that might have been approval flickered across Crowe’s face and then disappeared. He opened a drawer and took out a thin folder. He did not hand it over immediately.

"Hale still holds secondary copies," he said. Not the originals. Elena believes those were destroyed. Hale kept insurance. The copies are not complete, but they are enough to make the second document harder to enforce if they surface in the right hands. The problem is that Hale will not release them without a price, and the price will not be small.

"What kind of price?" I asked.

"The kind that requires someone to take on risk in public,"Crowe said. "Signatures. Statements. Exposure. He has remained careful for years. He will not become careless because you are in a difficult position."

Riven stepped closer to the desk. "Can you arrange a clean introduction?"

"I can arrange a conversation," Crowe said. "I cannot guarantee the outcome. And I will not be present for it. My debt to you covers the introduction and the confirmation. Nothing beyond that."

He finally held the folder out. Riven took it and passed it to me without opening it. The weight of the paper felt too light for the amount of danger it represented.

Inside are the terms Hale will likely demand and the channel Crowe will use to set the meeting, Riven said. Read them. Understand them. Once we leave this room the next step belongs to us.

I opened the folder. The language was precise and cold. Hale wanted a formal statement regarding certain transactions from the year my father died. He wanted it signed. He wanted limited protection against Elena’s retaliation. In exchange he would confirm the existence of the secondary copies and provide a controlled viewing.

My stomach turned. A signed statement meant another piece of paper with my name on it. Another potential weapon.

I looked up at Riven. This creates new exposure.

"Yes."

"And you still believe it is worth it?"

"I believe the alternative is allowing Elena to keep every advantage she currently holds," he said. "You can accept that arrangement or you can try to change it. Trying comes with cost. You already knew that when you told me to send the first message."

Crowe watched the exchange without interrupting. When the silence stretched he spoke again.

Elena contacted me this afternoon, he said. She did not ask about you by name. She asked whether anyone had been inquiring about old secondary agreements. I told her no. That answer will not hold forever. If you intend to move, move carefully and move soon.

Riven nodded once. "The introduction?"

"Tomorrow evening," Crowe said. "I will send the details through the usual channel. After that my part is finished. Do not contact me again unless you are prepared to offer something larger than the debt I already owed."

He unlocked the door and held it open. The hallway beyond looked darker than before. Riven placed a hand against the small of my back and guided me out. The contact was brief but it still sent a current through me that I did not have the capacity to examine cleanly.

We did not speak until we were back in the car. Riven started the engine and pulled into the street. The city moved past us in fragments of light and shadow.

"You are quiet," he said.

"I am calculating how many new ways this can destroy what is left of my life."

"That is a reasonable use of your time. Just do not let the calculation freeze you. Frozen people become easy to move."

I turned my head and studied him. The controlled expression was still there, but the tension around his mouth looked tighter than usual.

"What happens if Hale refuses?"

"Then we find another pressure point," Riven said. And we do it while Elena is already watching more closely than before. The margin for error becomes smaller. That is the reality of the path you chose when you told me to send the message.

I looked down at the folder still in my hands. The terms inside felt like another contract written in a different language but carrying the same weight. My signature had already been used against me once. The idea of placing it on anything new made my chest tighten.

Riven parked near my building but did not unlock the doors immediately.

"Night eight is not finished," he said. "You have the information. You understand the price Hale will ask. Tomorrow the introduction happens. Between now and then you will go upstairs and you will not tell Theo what you learned tonight. You will also not answer any message from Elena if she reaches out again. Clear?"

"Clear."

He unlocked the doors. I reached for the handle, then paused.

If this works and the secondary copies surface, what happens to your arrangement with Elena?

Riven looked at me for a long moment. The streetlight cut across his face and made his eyes harder to read.

Then the collection I am making and the debt she is collecting will no longer be able to share the same space, he said. And both of us will have to decide what remains.

He did not explain further. I stepped out of the car and closed the door. He waited until I entered the building before he pulled away. I climbed the stairs with the folder pressed against my side and the knowledge that tomorrow evening I would sit across from a man who held pieces of my father’s past in his hands, and that whatever I signed or refused to sign would shape the remaining nights in ways I could not yet fully see.

When I unlocked the apartment door the quiet inside felt different. Heavier. As if the walls themselves knew that the next move had already been set in motion and that Elena’s patience was no longer the only clock we were running against.

I woke before the sun with the envelope still in the jacket I had thrown over the chair. For a long moment I lay still and listened to the quiet of the apartment, half expecting the decision I had made in that dark lot to feel smaller in daylight. It did not. If anything it felt heavier.Theo was already in the kitchen when I walked in. He watched me pour coffee without speaking. The distance from the night before was still there, but something in his expression had shifted. He looked less like he was waiting for permission and more like he was measuring how much longer he could tolerate the silence."You left again last night," he said."I did.""With him.""Yes."Theo set his cup down carefully. "I keep trying to decide whether you are protecting me or protecting yourself from having to admit how deep this is. I still have not decided."I met his eyes. "Both can be true at the same time."He held my gaze for another second, then nodded once and left for class. The door closed quietl

I sat in the passenger seat with the envelope resting in my lap and the low hum of the engine filling the silence. Riven did not rush me. He simply watched the empty lot through the windshield as if he had all the time in the world. The patience felt deliberate. It always did.I turned the envelope over once without opening it. The paper was thick. Expensive. The kind of detail that made everything feel more calculated."You expect me to trust you with this," I said."I expect you to decide whether the alternative is worse," he replied. "Elena already knows you have been digging. She will not wait much longer before she tightens the pressure on Theo to remind you of your place. Victor Hale is one of the few remaining people who can make her position less clean. That is useful. It is also dangerous. Both things can be true at the same time."I looked at his profile. The scar on his knuckle was visible again under the dashboard light. I still did not know the story behind it. The not kn

I sat in the dark kitchen long after Riven dropped me off, still wearing the clothes I had put back on in that quiet room. My body ached in places that felt too intimate to name, but the physical marks were not what kept me awake. It was the sentence he had left me with.Elena is collecting a debt. I am collecting something else.I kept turning the words over, trying to force them into a shape I could use. The idea that Riven might not be fully aligned with Elena should have brought relief. Instead it only created a new kind of unease. A man who admitted he was collecting something from me while still delivering me into her plans was not safer. He was simply harder to predict.Theo’s door opened around two in the morning. He stood in the hallway and looked at me for a long time before he spoke."You did not come home the same," he said."I rarely do anymore."He walked into the kitchen and sat across from me. The low light from the street made his face look younger and older at the sa

  • Hundred Nights With Him    Chapter 15: The Doorway

I walked through the doorway.I hated that I did it without more of a fight. I hated the way my pulse climbed as I crossed the threshold and heard Riven close the door behind us. The room beyond was larger than the others, dimly lit, with wide windows that showed the city like a scattered field of lights. There was a bed. There was a chair. There was enough open space to make the quiet feel intentional.Riven stayed near the door for a moment and watched me."You are angry," he said."I am past angry.""Good. Anger is clearer than fear. It makes the truth harder to hide."I turned to face him fully. "You keep talking about truth as if you are the only one allowed to define it. You knew about Elena. You knew about the second document. You knew about the gaps in my memory. And you still let me walk into every one of these nights believing the contract was the main cage.""It was never the main cage,"he said. "You needed time to see that for yourself.""And now that I have seen it? What

I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes I saw my own signature at the bottom of that document and felt Elena’s hand over mine again. The anger sat in my chest like something alive. By the time morning light pushed through the curtains I was already awake and exhausted at the same time.Theo was in the kitchen when I walked in. He took one look at my face and set his mug down harder than necessary."You look worse than yesterday," he said. "Whatever that man is doing to you is getting heavier. I can see it."I poured coffee I did not want. "Leave it alone, Theo.""I am done leaving it alone. You come home later and later. You flinch when your phone lights up. You look at me like you are measuring how much truth I can carry. I am not fragile. Stop treating me like I will break if you tell me the real shape of this."The frustration in his voice scraped against the raw places already open inside me. I turned on him before I could stop myself."You want the real shape? Fine. Dad left
