~Alaric~
The study is in a peaceful silence, save for the occasional sound of Cedric tapping on the arm of the chair he sits on, across the desk from where I sit. It has already been a good few minutes since he came into my study and Cedric is yet to say a word, though I can tell he has a lot to say.
The file on my desk has my full attention, and it seems to further agitate Cedric that I have not paid him any attention since he arrived. Knowing Cedric as long as I have, I can tell but I do not acknowledge it, nor plan to.
"It has been a week...you haven't asked once." Cedric finally broke the silence. "I do not understand you."
"Asked about what?" I ask absentmindedly, turning the pages on the file I am working on.
"Do not feign ignorance." Cedric replied, unimpressed by my response. "It is hardly possible that her absence has gone unnoticed by you. So why have you not asked?"
'Her.' It is obvious to me who Cedric is referring to. Kyra... the girl he recruited to seduce me and get into my bed because he knows just how exact her resemblance is to my deceased mate.
The thought of it still aggravates me and I pass Cedric a withering glare before reverting my attention back to my files. "Bold of you to mention her to me. You have yet to answer for constantly disregarding my orders to keep her away from my private quarters."
Cedric purses his lips at my words and he takes a moment before he responds. "You cannot deny the fact that her presence affects the mania differently. Don't you want to be free of it? Even if you don't admit it, I know you'll give anything to go back to how things used to be..." Cedric trails off.
I frown at Cedric words but I do not argue. There is no point, Cedric knows me too well.
"Getting laid is not my way back to normalcy." I begin. "And, what has been lost cannot be given back... there is no going back..."
Cedric huffs beneath breath. "Do you think I don't know that? It's just... the quickest way to appeal to the lingering teters of your mate bond... hopefully fix something that was broken. There isn't a manual available for fixing your best friend's mania, is there? I just...did what I thought was best." Cedric sighs.
"I did not expect it to be such a complete failure too." Cedric adds. "You must have scared the living daylights out of Kyra, she gave up on you despite the cost being her own freedom."
My hand pauses momentarily over the file I am working on. "A complete failure..."
I had my suspicions that Kyra kept our night together a secret from Cedric but it is only now I confirm that she truly revealed nothing about the night we spent together in my bed and the fact that I am the one who failed and made love to her when I swore I would not.
The quiet snapping sound of the pen breaking in two halves is what draws my attention to how tightly I am gripping the pen in my hand and the potency of the rage surging through my veins.
Rage... disappointment, they were just a few of the tirade of emotions I feel at the moment. Though I am not certain what or who I am raging at, or what exactly I am disappointed in. The one thing I know for certain is that my state of mind has nothing to do with Kyra, I am solely responsible and it is for the best that she finally chose to leave at this point, before I lose control again and make everything even more complicated.
"Let her be. You have your hands full, keeping law enforcement from sniffing anywhere close to the silver tower." I say to Cedric after a short moment of silence.
Cedric nods slowly in agreement. "I do not know where they came up with the idea of a serial arsonist, but the entire city is shaken up by it. Do you think the wildfire could have been...planned?" Cedric asks worriedly.
"I mean, it seemingly started out of nowhere. Precisely when you were by yourself in the woods, and from my observation, the fire seemed to have been stronger around the cabin...more concentrated. Like someone..." Cedric trails off.
"Like someone knew I would be out there by myself at that time and took the opportunity to take me out." I complete the words Cedric is unable to, I have already guessed the same.
Kyra certainly is not a serial arsonist, but someone did set that fire, and the target was most likely me... I do not believe there are any coincidences in life, everything that happens is premeditated.
"An assassination attempt?...It would not be the first time. With our numbers dwindling, there are more than a few who want Lycans wiped from existence for good."
"Now, with so many eyes on the silver tower due to the fire, if nothing else, they achieved one thing. We will have to be more cautious when hunting down rogue supernaturals in the city, or risk exposing ourselves to humans." Cedric murmurs quietly.
The true appearance of the silver tower is only visible to the supernatural. To humans, it is just a regular mansion owned by my corporation in the desolate parts of Everdale. But the fire had started too close to the tower and now more and more humans were paying attention to these parts of the city, seeking out an arsonist.
"The city will be busy these days. Have everyone return to their mundane duties in the city for the time." I instruct Cedric. "It is for the best that we all take a page out of Kyra's book and lie low. But keep a close watch on the city, Cedric...if someone started this, they won't stop with just one wildfire."
The sound of metal striking metal echoes through the woods as I block Jake's attack, gritting my teeth against the sharp jolt of pain that shoots up the hand that withstands most of the force. My hands tremble and my grip on the short blade slips slightly but I am quick to recover, however not fast enough to escape Jake's notice. Jake's scowl deepens, his eyes narrow in suspicion."Quick reflexes, good time. But that won't keep you alive if you can't even hold your blade." Jake hisses, his voice cutting through the still atmosphere of the early morning.I grit my teeth and adjust my stance. The ache in my abdomen flares again, a sharp reminder of the secret I carry but I ignore it and focus on Jake's movements. Jake lunges again, faster this time and I twist to the side, but not nearly fast enough. I barely dodge in time and stumble back."What is wrong with you today?" Jake asks, lowering his weapon. "You're slower than usual and that's saying something."Wiping the sweat from my for
A knock on the door stirs me from a restless sleep and I sit up on my bed, glancing over at the clock by my bedside. I realize with a quiet groan that I have slept in past my work hours at the bar.I should have been there a half hour ago to take over Jake's shift so he could go about his business but somehow I slept through the alarm I had set. I can already tell who is at the door and I wince visibly knowing Jake will not be impressed by my tardiness."Kyra?" Jake's voice calls from the other side. "You decent?"Quickly getting off my bed, I throw on a shirt and wipe the sweat from my brow before I respond. "Yes, come in."The door opens and Jake steps in. His gaze sweeps over the room, the messy bed, evidence that I only just woke up and then over me, taking in the traces of exhaustion lingering on my face."Kyra, you're hiding something." Jake accuses directly, catching me off guard. "I'm fine." I reply a little too quickly.Jake folds his arms, his expression unreadable. "You're
~Kyra~A month later....A pulsing ache tore through my muscles as I drop to my knees in the dirt, my breaths come out in short pants and desperate gasps for air as I attempt unsuccessfully to stabilize my breathing. The stench of my own sweat fills my nostrils, and my vision blurs as Jake's voice sharply demands, "Get up," his tone is as hard as steel. "If you hope to be worth anything, you do not have the luxury of weakness!"A sharp retort springs up to my lips but I swiftly bite it back. Pushing myself up to my feet instead, though every movement feels like it will be the last I make if Jake keeps this up. Jake stands just a few feet away from me, his arms are crossed over his chest and his eyes are narrowed, watching me struggle just to get to my feet.I wince visibly, catching the flash of disappointment in his eyes. It has already been a month since Jake began training me and while I have put my all into it, my body constantly seems to betray me and I just cannot break past its

"Kyra, wake up." Jake's gruff voice stirs me awake. My eyes flutter open, still groggy and heavy with sleep. I glance around uncertainly, there is not a streak of daylight to be seen yet and a quick glance to the clock on the wall tells me it is just 5 in the morning.Jake's voice is urging in his second call and somewhat impatient. "Kyra. Get up and come out here. We have a busy day ahead."'What could he want so early in the morning?' I wonder to myself as I get off my bed and quickly throw on decent clothes. The room I currently occupy in Jake's house is much smaller than the room I was given in the Silver Tower, but it has all the basic amenities including a bathroom, a closet and even a small balcony with a limited view of the woods. It is much more practical and I never did need all the extra space.Unlocking the door, I pull it open and fix a questioning gaze on Jake who stands in the hallway, hand poised to knock a third time."Good, you're up. Come with me." Jake says, ignori
The Red Ember City is vastly different from Everdale. Unlike Everdale's array of high tech, sky rise buildings and corporate lifestyle, more common in Red Ember are vast ranches, low end bars and Victorian styled mansions with a much more laid back atmosphere.Red Ember City is considered a political concern to Everdale as it is not governed by a DA but a Sheriff and has never supported Everdale's political landscape. The population in Red Ember City is also different, numbering to just a quarter of Everdale's population which matches the small size of the city, Red Ember City is largely populated by unique shifters with an almost nonexistent human population.Just like Everdale, the humans in Red Ember City live unaware to the fact that they are surrounded by shifters all around. Our destination is one of the few prominent structures in Red Ember City, a towering building with minimalist designs. The street leading up to it is tarred, unlike the more common dirt roads and the name pl
"Tech... what the fuck is this?!" Top hisses as the anchor moved onto other breaking news."We stopped all law enforcement drones from capturing anything but we failed to take note of personal drones this far out in the shadowed woods. The image was uploaded last night and went viral in just a few minutes. It will be too suspicious to take it down now." Tech reports in a grim tone."I do not want to hear excuses! Keeping Lycan affairs out of human technology is your duty! Is this how you do your job?!" Top snarled."The image barely reveals anything, Cedric. It should be fine..." Sera tries to reason with a fuming Top."Nothing but the suspicion it elicits! Suspicion breeds curiosity, curiosity is the curse of humans! In no time, they will flood the shaded woods in search of evidence, adventure or a damned arsonist!" Top snarls.Top's words are true and worrisome, but they still are the least of my worries. The words Mikos said resonates in my mind repeatedly and my stomach knots in t
The first streak of daylight reflects against my eyelids and my eyes slowly flutter open. The first sensation I become aware of is the dull ache in my sex, reminding me of the events from the night before. My eyes are itchy from the tears, the only thing that had finally softened Alaric's heart to let me cum after taking me twice in succession. It is difficult to get out of my head the force of pleasure that followed the long awaited climax and I breathe a quiet sigh. The weight of Alaric's hand over my waist is the second thing I take note of. I expected to wake up to an empty bed, but Alaric's soft breaths against my neck tells me my expectation was wrong.Turning my head slightly, heat rushes up to my cheeks to find Alaric is completely naked, having kicked off the duvet and his morning wood is visible in all its glory. It is difficult to fathom how Alaric can still be aroused after the events from the night before, but his deep sleep testifies to the fact that he is also exhausted
As suddenly as it had come, the flames extinguish itself, leaving me without the only barrier of protection I had.The mania is visible in Alaric's eyes even before it takes hold of him once again. His brows furrow slightly, as though confused by his words from a moment ago and then his eyes narrow, In that moment, everything returned to exactly where he left off. But there is a flicker in his eyes, one I do not fail to recognize... arousal?Warmth pools in my lower belly, against my better judgement and even my will, my body reacts to Alaric's desire.Alaric leans in close to me, his nose grazing my neck, his hard chest brushes against mine, the fabric of his shirt graze my nipples and I bite back a quiet whimper."You are not her!" Alaric hisses darkly, his fingers enclose around my exposed throat, claws grazing my skin.A little pressure... just a little, and I would be dead."No... I am not..." I admit with difficulty.I only look similar to the deceased Luna supreme, I can never
