The next day, I woke up at nine in the morning. I was very late and I dreaded what I would find. I had drunk so much the night before. I dreaded what I could have done while under the influence of alcohol.

"You can't go in there, Karen," she said to me. I knew I was late but It wasn't my fault. He was the one that took me out and got me drunk in the first place.

"Valery, I have to report and let him know I am here." she shook her head.

She looked at me and sighed. I could sense she had something to tell me but she didn't know how.

"Karen, you've been fired," she told me and I began to shake.

"What for?" I asked, bewildered.

"I don't know. He just came and ordered me to fire you," she explained.

"Please Val, let me see him and beg. Let me explain to him." She shook her head.

"You are to return the keys to the apartment. You can keep every other thing." She told me and I shook my head.

"Please Val, let me see him." I pleaded with her.

"Walk away Karen. He was really mad this morning. Whatever it is you must have done, pissed him off. Don't get yourself into more trouble than you already have," she pleaded and I began to cry. I needed the job. Even if it would be for two to three months, I needed it. I couldn't be fired on the second day. I needed to save money so I could start my own business or leave town. I swallowed my pride and begged.

"Please Val. Let me see him and apologise." I pleaded with her in tears.

My life depended on the job. I was yet to fit in. I didn't even know what it entailed but the job was the only reason why I had hope, why I knew I might not end up on the streets. I needed the job. My heart was beating fast out of fear.

How did I let myself get carried away? I drank a whole bottle and puked everywhere, and because I was blank, I began to fear what I might have done between leaving that place and returning to my apartment.

"Okay Karen, I will step out and you will go in. If he asks of me, tell him I wasn't at my desk and pretend as if you don't know you are fired." She said, and I was grateful for her kindness. She stepped out and I waited a bit, then I went into his office.

"You should have thought about it when you decided to get drunk and puke all over," he said, "I don't hire drunks".

He looked at me for a while and sighed and said, "okay, last chance. If you screw up again I will have security throw you out." he threatened and I thanked him.

"Do you need anything?" I asked, resuming my job. He looked at me for a while. He wanted to ask me something but then changed his mind. He ordered me to sit on the couch and I obeyed.
