Three Weeks Later

I paced around my room as my phone buzzed and beeped in my hand. The alarm that used to excite me, now marked the start of what I knew was going to be another shitty day. I snatched my backpack off the table before storming out of my room. I froze when I saw Scarlett standing in front of the front door. My hand tightened on the strap over my shoulder, and I clenched my jaw as I walked down the stairs. I hadn’t seen Scarlett in three weeks, not since she had told me to go to hell. Neither her anger nor dating Vanessa now, did anything to curb how I felt about her.

“Have a good day, Elena.” I reached for the doorknob. “Scarlett.”

I shut the door behind me, exhaling harshly as I prided myself on not showing how I truly felt about her. I jogged down the three stairs and was almost to Beanie’s car when the door opened behind me. Her cinnamon scent wafted over me and I bit back a groan. I picked up speed, pretending to not hear her calling my name softly, almost shyly.

“OSPREY, YOU DICK! EVERYBODY KNOWS YOU CAN HEAR HER!” Elena shouted at me.

I spun around to glare at her. “WHAT?!” I roared.

Scarlett took a step back, glancing at Elena. “It’s nothing. Never mind,” she mumbled.

“Whatever.”

I turned back to the car and was in the process of getting in when a chunk of mud hit me in the face. I stared at it as it fell to the ground, almost as if it were in slow motion. Beanie grabbed my arm.

“Let’s go, Osprey.”

I jerked my arm away from him and leapt out of the car. I stormed over to my sister who waited until the last moment to jump behind Scarlett. She pushed Scarlett forward and she stumbled into me. I wrapped my arms around her to keep her from hitting the ground in her desperate attempt to get away from me. When she looked up at me, Godric immediately made me pull her closer to inhale her scent quickly before I set her back away from me. I bared my teeth at my sister who held her hands up.

“Scarlett, tell him.”

I looked at her expectantly. “What is it?”

“I… I wanted to apologize,” she whispered.

“Apology accepted. Bye.”

Her hand landed on my arm, making me freeze. I looked at her hand before slowly raising my eyes to hers. Her face turned red and she quickly removed her hand. I wanted to beg her to put it back. I wanted to stay in her presence forever. Her touch had instantly soothed my irritation.

“I’m sorry I got upset. You asked about your mate, so when I saw you were kissing Vanessa, I just-”

I longed to take her in my arms, and I was about to do just that when Raul stepped out onto the porch. I bit back a groan, and narrowed my eyes on her, as the sight of him made my frustrations instantly rear up again.

“I don’t have a mate. I don’t want one either. Is that all?”

Tears filled her eyes as she glanced at Elena. My sister’s hands fisted by her side.

“You are such a fucking liar, Osprey. You know damn well that Aunt Scarlett is-”

“Don’t you fucking dare,” I hissed.

“THEN STOP BEING STUPID! YOU KNOW DAMN WELL THAT YOU L-”

My hand shot out to wrap around her throat, squeezing tight. I yanked her towards me as my aura flared out. She had given me the perfect way to let out all the hurt, anger, and depression the past few weeks without Scarlett had built up in me. Raul came rushing down the stairs, calling for our other parents.

“Watch your fucking mouth, Elena,” I growled as Godric strengthened our aura, making Elena whimper as she clawed at my hand.

Our parents rushed over to us, and I turned to glare at them individually before meeting my father’s eyes last. Our mother stepped towards me.

“Let her go, Osprey. NOW!” she ordered.

I turned my furious gaze back to my sister. I tightened my grip more, smirking when her face turned even redder. I lifted her a foot off the ground and threw her backward. As she hit the ground hard, I could already see the bruises forming on her throat. She lay there gasping for air with her hand around her neck. I closed my eyes into slits as I glared at her.

“Don’t ever fucking say that again!” I snapped, letting my aura out more.

She nodded as most of my fathers wobbled. I was yanked backward before being jerked around to stand in front of my father. Carson growled at me, sending Godric running to the back of my head, terrified of our father’s retribution for our actions. My aura immediately died as my father’s overpowered it, making me lower my head in submission.

“DO NOT EVER PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR SISTER AGAIN! ANY OF THEM! THAT FUCKING INCLUDES GERALD! I DON’T KNOW WHAT HAS GOTTEN INTO YOU BUT WE DON’T ACT LIKE THAT!”

I nodded. “Yes, sir.”

He walked me to Beanie’s car, stuffed me inside, and leaned down into my face.

“We will be discussing this when you get home from school. I swear if you put one toe out of line today, I will come down there and we will handle it sooner. Am I understood?” I gulped and nodded. “You are to come straight home after school. No football practice or seeing that girlfriend of yours.” My jaw clenched again at Scarlett’s whimper upon hearing that I had a girlfriend. “Now, get your ass to school.”

He slammed the door so hard that the entire car shook. Beanie shifted gears as I took one last look at Scarlett, who was knelt at Elena’s side, talking to her. When I couldn’t see her anymore, I sighed as I settled back into my seat with my arms crossed over my chest. I cut my eyes at my furious best friend.

“I take it you're mad at me, too?”

His hands gripped the steering wheel harder. “You hurt Elena. Why would you hurt her? She didn’t do anything wrong.”

“She put her nose in a situation that doesn’t involve her.” I narrowed my eyes on him. “Just like you’re doing now.”

“Fuck you, Osprey. Whatever is going on between you and Scarlett is your business, but don’t hurt Elena.”

I rolled my eyes. “You sound like you care about her.”

He shot me an angry look. “We grew up together. We’re basically family,” he snarled.

I turned to look out the window. “Yeah, ‘family.’”

“She is.”

“That’s what I say about Scarlett, too.”

“Just because you care about her more than a family member doesn’t mean that’s how it is with me and Elena.”

I turned back to him to study his face. I noted his anger, along with his need for violence, which was easy for me to pick up on.

“This is why we’re best friends,” I say.

“Why is that?”

I looked back out the window. “Because we’re both bad liars.”

He sighed. “That we are."

  • Hunting Their Enemies   Elena's Mate

ElenaI waved to Stu and Wes. They were some of my favorite sleuth members to mess with. They had gone away for the summer, along with a few other members, to go to another city for a football camp. My brother had just gotten back a little over a week ago, and this was my first time seeing them since they got home. I hugged them both as we immediately slid back into our normal teasing manner. Osprey joined us after a few minutes, and even though I could tell he was not really enjoying himself, he laughed, carrying on like he had no worries in the world.Suddenly, a tantalizing mix of dark soil with pine hit my nose, making me utter a little growl. My legs trembled and my mouth watered. I swallowed hard as Eden purred in my head. I slowly scanned the area, looking for the scent that was driving me crazy, when my eyes locked with Beanie’s. I grabbed Osprey’s arm.“Beanie’s back!” I said excitedly. He gave me a weird look. “Yes. He just got back today.”Beanie walked away from Nenna, who

  • Hunting Their Enemies   Getting Under His Skin

Junior YearOsprey (A week Later)Elena skipped down the stairs wearing a skintight, short black dress, with her dual-colored eyes glinting excitedly. I groaned. She was too excited for this party tonight. She was determined to come home with a name she had already made for herself. I had no idea why she wanted to be a cheerleader, but it was what it was. She would excel as one. She was bendy and had the nauseating peppy energy that they all had. Raul eyed her outfit.“Go change! You are not going out dressed like that!” he growled.I rolled my eyes as her bottom lip quivered. “But, Daddy,” she whined, “Osprey will be there. He will keep me from getting in trouble. Please.”I bit back a chuckle when her eyes filled with tears, and I knew he would give in. He groaned as he turned to me.“You are to bring your sister home safely. And no fucking drinking, Elena. I mean it!”Her pout turned into a smile as she hugged him. “Thanks, Daddy. Love you, Mom!”Our mother chuckled. “Love you, guy

  • Hunting Their Enemies   Giving up

After the party, I came straight home, tossing and turning in bed for hours. Images of Scarlett and Justin kept me awake, intensifying my anger. I fucking hated it. She was mine and only mine, dammit. Nobody could have her. I didn’t need Godric to tell me that I was in love with her. I already fucking knew it. I’d known since I could walk and talk. Hell, I probably knew before I could even breathe. I rolled onto my back, debating if I really wanted to do what Godric had been begging me to do. He wanted me to be sweet to her. He wanted me to win her back with rainbows, butterflies, and glitter bombs. He was under the impression that she was like Elena, who was still into all the fluffy, girly stuff like make-up, clothes, and celebrity gossip.I got up to pace with my hands clasped behind my back, having given up on sleeping. For someone who claimed to love Scarlett, he pretended to not know anything about her. Our Scarlett was more down-to-earth. She liked the simple things in life, li

  • Hunting Their Enemies   Green-Eyed Monster

Two Months LaterI shifted back just outside of my house. I had left camp almost a week early to come home for Scarlett’s and Elena’s birthday party. I had never missed one before, and I was not about to start now. I quickly pulled basketball shorts over my hips before hurrying inside to put on real clothes. I shouldn’t have left camp, but it was driving me crazy to be there. Between missing Scarlett and Beanie not speaking to me since our meeting with Arianna, I couldn’t stay there anymore. I hadn’t meant to hurt his feelings, and I kind of thought he was being a little bitch about the whole situation. Which made me feel even guiltier about it, because I knew that if someone had alluded to me not being enough for Scarlett, I would have ripped their throats out.‘Hey, Alpha,’ Beanie linked me suddenly, shocking the hell out of me.‘What’s up, bro?’‘Just wanted to remind you about the present for Elena.’I rolled my eyes. ‘I got you.’‘Thank you. I’m sorry for my behavior lately.’I s

  • Hunting Their Enemies   Talking With Arianna

“Osprey, how are you? Who is this?” she asked.“I’m okay. Thank you for coming. This is my best friend, Beanie.”She ran her eyes over him before hugging me. “Hmmmm. He’s a little cutie. Has he started dating one of your sisters yet?”I let her go to sit back in my chair as she took hers. Beanie grumpily also took his, making me shoot him a glare. He cleared his throat as he straightened up at my silent order.“No, he isn’t dating any of my sisters. What makes you think he would date one of them?” I inquired curiously.“Well, the best friend always dates a little sister at some point. My bet is he gets with Elena,” she mused.I tensed up as Beanie immediately started to sputter a bunch of nonsense, making her laugh.“I knew it. Your secret is safe with me, Bernard.” She winked at me. “Not that I think Elena would care if he asked her out. She’d jump on him like a beehive in a tree.”I raised an eyebrow at her. “A beehive in a tree?”“Bears. Honey. Goddess, I keep forgetting how young

  • Hunting Their Enemies   Tensions Rise On the Field

I leaped over Sage, trusting Wes to keep him off our current quarterback, Stu, to race after Silver, who had intercepted the ball. Godric pushed us faster, and in seconds, we were right behind Silver, diving at his legs. We hit the ground with my arms around his thighs as he desperately tried to wiggle away from me. He pulled his leg out of my hold before kicking back at my face. I was forced to let him go as I rolled away. I jumped up just in time to avoid his next kick, which landed where my head had been seconds before. I bounced lightly on my heels, prepared for a fight that I hoped I could avoid, but if I couldn’t, he would pay for that, too. Assistant Coach Maxwell got between us, and I let out a relieved breath, knowing that I wasn’t going to have to rip his throat out. Silver lunged at me again, only avoiding an ass whooping by Maxwell stopping him.“Walk it off, Silver. NOW!”Silver’s jaw clenched as he started jogging around the field. Maxwell narrowed his eyes on me before
