Chapter 3

Autor: Sunflower
"I think Queenie has a thing for you, Timothy. Are you already dating her?" one of Timothy's friends asked.

Timothy sneered, his voice dripping with contempt as he replied, "How could I possibly be interested in Queenie, especially with her scrappy, dirt-poor appearance? I'm only using her to get through my schoolwork."

"You're something else, Timothy! Zachary actually has to pay for Queenie to tutor him!"

"Zachary's not going anywhere in life anyway, especially with that brain of his. You guys should just wait and see. I'll have Queenie all to myself sooner or later."

I felt a chill run down my spine as I sat in one of the cubicles in the restroom. His remarks stood in stark contrast to the character he portrayed to our classmates.

I chose not to tell Queenie the truth to protect her emotional state, fearing it would ruin her focus during such a crucial final year of high school.

I tried to warn her indirectly to keep away from him, and when she finally asked if Timothy could join us for the tutoring session, I gave her a firm refusal.

Timothy walked away disappointed, only to be struck by a car. That moment marked the beginning of his life falling apart.

In the end, Queenie cried and blamed me.

In my previous life, I didn't realize she was guilt-tripping me, which led me to become entirely submissive to her. I eventually realized my sacrifices were futile, as she didn't want my devotion but rather my demise.

In this life, I finally learned my lesson. I figured I would just let the two of them have each other and be done with it. I saw no point in saying anything else to them.

Queenie grew unusually agitated when I refused her suggestion. She glared at me and started guilt-tripping me just like she used to.

"Why can't you let Timothy join in on the tutoring session? You shouldn't behave so selfishly during this crucial time for our studies, Zachary."

Queenie's grades were excellent in high school, but she was also quite haughty. She was also so broke that she frequently couldn't even afford three meals a day.

I wasn't particularly interested in studying, but I still paid for her tutoring and had her tutor me, doing it merely to protect her pride.

I even arranged for her to intern at Dad's company after she graduated and secretly helped her secure the role of project manager. I then handed over full control of the company's operations to her once we were married.

I had done so much for her, yet Queenie still bore resentment toward me over Timothy. I had been granted a second chance in life now, so I wasn't about to make the same mistake twice.

Timothy joined in at that moment, his indifferent eyes turning bloodshot as he gently tugged at Queenie's sleeve. He looked quite miserable, with tears brimming in his eyes but never quite dropping.

I secretly marveled at his performance, finding it hard to believe that a guy could pull off that kind of "innocent act" so effectively.

Timothy suddenly said, "I'll end up working in a factory if I don't make it into college, so please just think of it as saving my life. I swear I'll do everything I can to pay you back for your favor later, Zachary."

Queenie roared, "Do you really have to push Timothy into a corner before you're satisfied, Zachary?"

I picked up a tissue from the coffee table and handed it to Timothy, who was on the verge of tears. "You can't be serious, Timothy. I wouldn't dream of taking responsibility for something as important as your future."

I immediately took out my phone and transferred 150 dollars to Queenie right then and there, all while finding it quite ironic how she was still pinned at the top of my messaging app. I felt utterly disgusted by it.

"I've sent you the tutoring fees for this month, Queenie, so you don't have to come here anymore. You should just focus on helping Timothy from now on. I won't interfere with any of it from today onward."

In the blink of an eye, I graduated safely from the finance department and officially took over Dad's company. Thea had also been studying financial investment during university, and we became business partners after graduation. One night, she and I drank quite a lot during a business social event, so we called for an Uber.Upon entering my upscale residential district, the Uber driver remained in the car, fixing her gaze upon me. She finally broke the silence and asked, "Do you really not recognize me, Zachary?"I studied her face carefully and caught a glimpse of Queenie's former self within her silhouette. She had aged so much in just a few years. There were even a few strands of gray in her hair.Thea discreetly retreated to a distance, giving us some privacy to talk."I know it may sound ridiculous, but for years, I've been dreaming about a parallel world, and recently, those dreams have grown even more vivid, almost like pieces of a real memory fitting together. "In that

Queenie had transformed entirely ever since that incident. She hadn't fully recovered physically, but she still forced herself to return to school. She almost drained all her savings from selling those pirated DVDs due to her hospitalization, but at least she stopped hanging out with that shady crowd. She went back to a modest lifestyle, eating plain meals and burying herself in her books. She looked as if she had become the old, studious Queenie, the one who didn't care about anything but her grades.Yet, despite all of that, it was clear that she wasn't the same anymore. She used to excel at physics, but now she didn't even have the nerve to answer the most basic questions from the teacher. She had practically destroyed her prospects after the three-month break in her studies, especially considering how important the final year of high school was.It was said that education was an uphill battle—once one stopped climbing, one would start falling. Queenie became the living embodi

Timothy and Queenie's stunt set off another wave of gossip among our classmates, with their photo spreading like wildfire. They seemed determined to show everyone that being young meant being reckless and showy.I chose to make the most of the little time remaining before the SATs, burying myself in practice papers and refusing to waste another moment. I eagerly promised Thea that I would reach the top ten as another mock exam approached.I didn't understand why she still wanted to sit for the SATs even though she had already earned a guaranteed admission through her competition achievements. Still, I chose to support her decision. It was finally the day of the mock exam, but both Queenie and Timothy were absent. I only learned about what happened to them two days later. It turned out that they had fought over a trivial matter the day before the mock exam, which escalated into a dramatic cat-and-mouse chase, with her unable to escape his pursuit.Timothy, having lost all composur

Thea's big interview day arrived following the mock exams.I wanted to do something for her since she had helped me so much in the past, so I rode my bicycle and personally took her to the place where the interview was being held. I fussed over her like a nagging mother, saying, "You should check if you have your admission ticket and ID with you so that nothing goes wrong."Thea confidently opened her folder and said, "I've got everything right here!"I took a closer look and noticed a major problem. The admission slip had turned into a sheet of blank paper."Oh, my God! What happened?" Thea exclaimed.Fortunately, I had prepared ahead of time and printed a spare admission slip. I promptly replaced her slip, double-checked everything she had brought, and urged her into the exam hall.I turned into a small alley at the corner after watching her figure gradually disappear among the other examinees, and just as I had expected, someone was lurking there, clad in a black mask and ba

It was finally time for the mock exam, with the seating assigned randomly. As if by a twist of fate, I was assigned to the same room as Queenie and Timothy, situated directly between the two.Queenie approached me in private with a request. She wanted me to slip Timothy the answers during the exam. She said, "You can also refer to my answers in return, Zachary."I was stunned by her blatant attempt at cheating and turned her down immediately. "When did you start resorting to these pathetic tricks, Queenie?"Queenie froze momentarily. She pressed her lips together, seemingly trying to find the right way to say it. "I'm begging you. If Timothy messes up this test, his father will beat him to death, Zachary.""I'm sorry, but I can't help you," I said, sticking to my guns and turning her down again.Right then, Thea walked over and intervened. "Your boyfriend should at least study seriously and diligently like my student here if he wants to get good grades."Queenie was stunned. "Wha

I had a much easier time studying than before in the following week. Without Queenie and Timothy's interference, and aided by Thea's clear analytical methods, I felt as if I were finally learning something. I solved problems I once found impossible and realized I wasn't hopelessly stupid, as Queenie had suggested, after all. Effort really did lead to progress.I ran into Queenie again a week later, noticing that she appeared significantly worn, with sunken eyes. The time she was forced to spend at home following the relationship scandal with Timothy had evidently been difficult. However, the experience hadn't made her behave any better. Instead, she came looking for me and insisted that I tell the teacher it was all a misunderstanding. "Timothy only locked the door by accident. He didn't mean anything by it, Zachary. Why do you have to make such a big deal out of it when we're all classmates here?"I couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity, as the surveillance footage clearly p
