Chapter 3

Author: Marvelous Meow
I sold my wedding ring.

The buyback price came to 8,400 dollars, enough to cover the deposit for my mother's surgery.

As the clerk sealed the ring in a plastic bag, she asked, "Are you sure you don't want to think it over? There's still a name engraved inside the band."

I shook my head. "No need."

The ring had originally cost 56,000 dollars. Lynette had slipped it onto my finger with her own hands, promising that I would never have to worry about money again. Now it was worth exactly one surgery.

When I returned from the hospital, Lynette was sitting in the living room. The receipt from the buyback shop lay on the coffee table.

"Where's the ring?" she asked.

"I sold it."

"Why didn't you wait for my approval?" she demanded.

"My mother couldn't wait."

Her brow creased slightly. "I already talked to the doctor. The surgery can be pushed back a week."

"The bed goes to someone else today," I said.

"If it does, we'll switch hospitals," she countered.

"The lead surgeon only has time this week." I bent down to change my shoes and kept my voice quiet. "The money came from my own ring. You don't need to worry about it."

Lynette stood and caught my wrist. Her grip was not hard, but she refused to let me go. "Harold, do you have to push me like this?"

"Push you into what?"

"Into admitting I don't care about your mother. Into bowing to you over 6,000 dollars."

I looked at her and suddenly found myself speechless. So in her eyes, my mother's surgery was not a matter of life and death. It was leverage I was using to win an argument.

Lynette released my wrist and pulled a card from her wallet. "There's 10,000 dollars on this. The PIN is your birthday. Buy the ring back. Don't make me a laughingstock in front of everyone."

My body moved before my judgment could catch up.

I reached for the card.

But just then, her phone lit up.

Jayden had sent her a photo of himself wearing my jade pendant and a 17,400-dollar watch.

His message read: [Ms. Kensington, come with me to meet the investors tonight. I can't handle them alone.]

Lynette pulled the card back. "Go to the hospital first. I have an obligation tonight."

"My mother's surgery is tomorrow morning. A family member needs to sign the consent form," I said.

"Your signature is enough."

"She's been wanting to see you," I added.

"After the launch." She picked up her coat and walked to the door, then stopped. "Come tomorrow night too. Jay says having the family there makes for a better story. Don't dress too plainly. I'll have my assistant send some clothes over for you."

The night before my mother's surgery, Denise Crawford came to the hospital. She had been my father's lawyer while he was alive and had also been my friend since childhood.

She handed me a document folder. "The power of attorney your father left you for his shares expires next month. You never got back to me, so I had to come in person."

I froze. "What shares?"

"32% of the Kensington Group." Denise looked at me. "When the Kensington Group was first founded, your father provided the initial investment under your name. After you got married, you signed a proxy agreement that transferred the voting rights to Lynette for three years."

I remembered the stack of documents Lynette had brought me before the wedding. She had told me they were for our joint account and to change the insurance beneficiary after we married.

I had signed them all without reading them closely.

"And after it expires?" I asked.

"You can renew the agreement, or you can take back the voting rights," Denise answered.

The hospital room door swung open.

Lynette stood in the doorway, her gaze fixed on the document folder in Denise's hand. "What are you doing here?"

Denise stood. "I came to sit with Harry while he signs the surgical consent form."

"He has a wife. He doesn't need you here for that." Lynette walked over and placed another document in front of me. "The brand launch requires a supplementary signature for the design authorization. Sign it, and I'll have Finance cover the full cost of your mother's treatment."

I turned to the last page.

The authorization covered every design I had ever created, both before and after our marriage, with no time limit.

"And if I don't sign?"

Lynette's expression remained unchanged. "Then it goes through the normal family approval process, and there's no guarantee all of your mother's future medication will be covered."

From behind the curtain, my mother asked, "Is Lyn here?"

I heard wheels rolling down the hallway and picked up the pen.

Lynette pressed a finger against the corner of the document. "Sign your full name. Don't get it wrong."

I wrote my name, Harold Weston, one letter at a time.

The instant my pen left the page, my mother let out a soft sigh from behind the curtain. "Harry, the reason I agreed to let you marry her back then was because she told me she'd never let you suffer."

Lynette's fingers stiffened for a moment.

A nurse pushed open the hospital room door. "Family members, please step aside. We're taking her to the operating room now."

Lynette put the authorization away without meeting my eyes.

A year later, my studio held its first private exhibition. My mother sat in the front row with the repaired sapphire pendant around her neck. The crack had not been hidden. Instead, a thin line of gold traced its edges. She touched the pendant and asked, "Why not get a new one?""The old one still works fine.""You don't mind the crack?"I straightened her sleeve. "A crack is a crack. There's no reason to pretend it never happened."The final piece in the exhibition was a remade version of Homecoming. I had abandoned the original crescent shape and left an empty space at the center of the brooch. I renamed it Echo.Denise stood beside the display case and asked, "Someone offered seven figures. Will you sell it?""No.""Keeping it for a future child?" she asked.I shook my head. "Keeping it for myself."Lynette had come by three times, and each time, she had been turned away at the door. On her fourth visit, she did not ask to see me. She simply left something at the front de

On the day of the divorce mediation, Lynette arrived 20 minutes late. She wore the same dark gray coat she had worn when we registered our marriage. The cuffs were already worn thin."Traffic," she said.I checked the time. "40 minutes left before this ends."The mediator asked about the division of assets.Lynette listed the marital home, our savings, and her shares in the Kensington Group. She offered all of it to me."I only want him to withdraw the divorce," she claimed."No," I said."Then the house is yours. The shares are yours too. We can delay the divorce for a year," she suggested."No."She turned to me. "Harold Weston, what exactly do you want from me?""Sign it."Lynette pressed her hand against the agreement. "I've already cut off contact with Jay. Every dollar he misappropriated has been recovered. I've fixed everything that bothered you.""He was never what bothered me," I said."Then what was it?"I looked at her. "It was having a 102°F fever and needing

The day the special audit results came in, the Kensington Group called an emergency shareholders' meeting.Jayden sat at the far end of the conference table, with 273 transaction records spread out before him. The total was 1,200,000 dollars.Beyond the clothes, the watch, and the meals, the expenses included a down payment on an apartment registered in his mother's name. The head of the audit team asked, "Mr. Scott, how does this property relate to company operations?"Jayden looked at Lynette. "Ms. Kensington said my housing situation was unstable and could affect my work."Lynette sat at the head of the table, her voice steady. "The money comes out of my annual bonus.""Your bonus hasn't been disbursed yet," the audit lead said. "This payment came out of the Marketing account."The board members murmured among themselves.Jayden's eyes reddened. "I don't know how Finance handles the bookkeeping. Ms. Kensington arranged all of it."I pushed another document across the table

I reopened the studio after three years. The sign outside was thick with dust, and the key stuck twice before the door finally opened. The tools on the desk were exactly where I had left them.Lynette stood in the doorway but did not come inside. "The landlord said you're renewing the lease for five years.""Yes.""The Kensington Group could give you an entire floor of office space," she pointed out."No need.""What about equipment and a team?" she asked."Already hiring."She set a contract on the desk. The Kensington Group was willing to return the Glimmer project to me, preserve my full design credit, and give me ten percent of the brand's profits."What's the condition?" I asked."Withdraw the divorce filing."I shook my head. "Then there's nothing to talk about."Lynette pressed her hand against the contract. "This is the opportunity you used to want most.""I used to want your respect too."The sound of workers carrying equipment drifted in through the open window.

Lynette refused to sign the divorce agreement for three days.On the fourth day, she showed up with a bank card that had no spending limit.I was peeling an apple in my mother's hospital room when she set the card on the nightstand. "The PIN hasn't changed. It's still your birthday."I glanced at the card. "Take it back.""Your mother's recovery is going to cost money," she said."There's already 100,000 dollars in the hospital account," I shot back. Her tone turned cold in an instant. "Did Denise give you that?" I sliced the peeled apple into small pieces. "It's my money.""Where did you get 100,000 dollars?" she demanded."I kept a few patents when I sold the studio. I received a licensing renewal fee last week."Lynette fell silent for a long moment. "Why didn't you tell me?"I almost laughed. "Do I need to send you a receipt for approval whenever I earn more than 100 dollars, too?"Her expression shifted slightly. My mother leaned back against the headboard and spoke

The big screen went dark all at once, and every piece of live-broadcast equipment in front of Lynette lit up red at the same time.[Dispute over core design copyright detected. Launch suspended.]…By the time Lynette tracked me down at the hospital, my mother had just been transferred out of the ICU.She slammed the divorce agreement onto the table. The pages skidded across the surface and stopped at my feet."Who gave you permission to freeze the brand? Harold, do you have any idea how much we lost tonight?" she demanded furiously.I tucked the blanket securely around my mother's shoulders."Keep your voice down," I said."So now you care about other people's comfort?" She barely kept her anger in check. "Jay is cornered backstage by reporters. Our partners are demanding triple damages. You walked out without saying a word, then froze the entire copyright on top of it. How am I supposed to clean this up?"Denise turned from the window. "Ms. Kensington, Mr. Weston didn't free
